I originally purchased a Kindle Fire HD8 + Show Mode Dock for my kitchen. In short, the speakers sucked, Show Mode was a pain to disable when docked and it couldn't even edit recipes. Returned promptly. Enter the Lenovo M10 (32GB).
Considering the reviews, I expected it to be almost useless as a tablet. You were all much too critical. It costs less than your trip to Costco for God's sake. I'm 24 and slightly impatient. I always have a current gen phone and a custom built PC. I can't stand waiting for things to load. Much to my surprise, this tablet lives up to my standard.
It's replaced the need to have my phone at all times when home. WHAT DID HE JUST SAY?! It's 2019 after all. When's the last time you were sitting on your couch and thought "Screw this iPhone's tiny 6-inch screen, lemme grab my tablet." Well, now for me, it's constantly. Especially because I made Alexa the default voice assistant. A long tap of the home button brings her up instantly. Perfect for the bedroom where I felt a dedicated Alexa device wasn't worth the cost.
-Show Mode
It's just as expected. An Echo with a display. Ask her what's on your calendar, she tells you AND shows you. Haven't missed an appointment in weeks. ADHD cured! Ask to show the backyard camera. Pops right up on your kitchen counter. My personal favorite: ask her to play a song. The lyrics are on the screen scrolling with the music. You can be the next Shawn Mendes while dicing avocados without even knowing a single word!
-Performance
I'm obviously writing this review on it. I read/watched a review that stated it was show to switch between apps but quick once it loaded. What? Are you running it with the storage maxed at 99% RAM utilization? It hasn't had a single hiccup. Day-to-day usage is flawless. It takes a lot to replace an iPhone. But Lenovo put just enough hardware in the M10 32GB to make it happen.
Features-
The default Swype keyboard in portrait orientation is perfect for single-finger typing. Full Google Play Store (tablet) options and Alexa built-in make it all you could ask for. Front and back cameras for video calling your Aunt in Zimbabwe during Christmas because when the hell else are you going to use a camera on a tablet? The screen is almost flagship quality and touch is very responsive. Alexa hears me perfectly when docked or in my hand. Did I mention it's a freaking Android tablet when you pick it up?! Screw the Portal and Echo Show. Try opening a spreadsheet on those cinder blocks.
The Dock-
Oh mah gawd. I have a normal sized apartment kitchen: 10x10, L-shaped, ugly cabinets. The usual. The dock's speakers fill the room and then some even at low volume. I will say there is a huge jump from level 3-4 volume. Not exactly preferred when you get home at 1am and want to listen to music while cleaning. But WHO CARES IT STILL SOUNDS AMAZING! I'm not an audiophile but I hated the Fire HD8's tin can speakers. The M10 is more than high enough quality for a kitchen. I would say it's on par with the other Echo devices. Oh and after initial setup, you can pair it to other Bluetooth devices as a Bluetooth speaker. Preeeetttyy coooool.
Gripes:
As of now, you can't add it to a group for multi-room music. AS OF NOW. I contacted Amazon asking for any way to make it work. They said it isn't supported as of yet and submitted a request to the development team. I was told it usually takes around two weeks for a high priority feature to roll out.
The first few days I had it, it kept saying the dock firmware needed upgraded. Tapping the banner bright you to the Lenovo Dock Super Updating Unopenable App in the play store. And... It did nothing. Until it magically did... Something... And the message stopped showing up. So yeah, that's fixed I think.
Summary-
If you want an Alexa device with decent speakers and a display, GET THIS ONE. The fact that you can pick it up and use it as a Kindle, large Android game device or even a giant Fire TV remote makes it worth every penny. I opted for the 32GB M10 for the added RAM without the unnecessary "premium" features of the 3GB RAM P10 like the upgraded camera, extra speakers and glass back. Plus I only paid 185 for a like-new, used one from an Amazon warehouse. STOP LOOKING AND BUY IT.
Got it today and asked the kid to charge it while I was at work so I could set it up when I got home. There was an update right away so I grabbed that. I also set this up from a backed up setup on Google to one of my other tablets. Easy.
I was a little surprised to see a glass backside to this. It looks good but I'm sure it's a fingerprint magnet. The screen looks good. Bright and it looks sharp. It would be nicer to have thinner bezels but if that's for better speakers, I'll live with it.
About those speakers. There are 4 of them and I streamed a couple of movies to test them out. They're still small tablet speakers but I thought the sound was pretty good for a tablet. They face a little forward as the edge has a curve to it which allows the speakers to face a little forward.
I'm messing with facial recognition unlock. I've never been overly impressed with this on any device yet. We'll see how that works. Other than that, there is the standard pin, pattern or fingerprint unlock options. I'm a fingerprint and pin guy.
It charges via USB c and it seems to charge fairly quickly. Next to the USB c port is a headphone jack... Yay.. In landscape mode, they would be on the right side and the volume control and power button would be on the left side.
I'll continue testing and update this in a few days or so. Early feel tells me that this is a pretty good tablet. We'll see how right I am.
In terms of android tablets, I think this is number 8 that I own and probably number 16 in the family. I've seen good and bad. Just bought my son a Samsung galaxy tab a and he's loving it. This one feels similar and in some ways, it feels a bit smoother but this is early yet. Back in a bit.
Update: I've had the tablet for about 2 weeks now. I can definitely agree with some statements about the lagginess of this tablet. It's smooth enough but there are times when you don't think it should get buggy and laggy but it does. It doesn't happen a lot but enough to notice.
I just connected a Bluetooth keyboard to this to try and type this addition to my review. The connection happened without a problem but wow...when I tried to type, there was probably a 2 second delay in the keys being registered on screen. I switched to my other tablet and there is barely a delay. So I'd say based on that, bluetooth isn't really up to snuff on this tablet. Which probably adds merit to those who say there are connectivity issues with the Alexa base.
If I could give this 3.5 stars I think I would...maybe 3.7 or so...I'll leave it at 4 stars. As a tablet, it's pretty good. But I have a 4 year old Pixel C and a Huawei Mediapad M5 along with Samsung Galaxy Tab A to compare this to. The Huawei is the smoothest running of the bunch but that's a smaller 8.4 inch screen. The Pixel C, even though it's 4 years old and running on 3 GB of ram, still runs about as smooth as this tablet. But that's a heavier 4:3 ratio screen and I wanted a 10 inch widescreen.
I finally got a case for this tablet and holding it is so much better now. I did not like that glass back finish. It looked nice but it's not that functional when it comes to holding the tablet. It feels so much better with the case. It doesn't feel like it's going to slip right out of my hands. But because of this case I probably won't be touching that Alexa base for a while. I snapped the case in place and then realized I didn't try to connect to the base. But I don't feel like snapping it off just to use the base that I probably won't use. My house is already equipped with all sorts of Echo devices.
I have been somewhat disappointed in Lenovo products in the past few years. I had a gaming laptop that I didnt' think ran as it should have for the specs it had. That was about 5 years ago that I got that. Then I have a Lenovo Miix laptop. I've been using that for about 2 years now and it runs OK but before I reset it to factory, it was super sluggish and always hanging up in the middle of something. I had a Lenovo android tablet about 5 years ago. Again, just not impressed with the overall function. The build quality of all these items seem to be there but the software didn't seem to run the way you thought it might with the internal specs the way they were. This is a general Lenovo statement across the devices I've owned.
Update: facial recognition sucks and so does the fingerprint unlock. Very mixed results and a lot of failed attempts to unlock via those methods. But I will say that the tablet seems to have settled and smoothed out. I'm still not impressed with the color on some screens but it's good enough.
