Either way, playing this game solo or CO OP is a blast. Pick it up or buy gamepass to play it.
Crackdown 1 released in 2007, and was a commercial success. The game had the added draw of luring in Halo fans by offering an exclusive beta that could only be accessed by owning the game. At the time, the open world cel-shaded aesthetic was well received, and the game was good fun to boot. Crackdown 2 was an utter failure since it simply took the same map and gameplay from the first and made minor changes that weren’t worth a revisit. For Crackdown 3, Microsoft initially touted the 'Power of the Cloud' as their main draw, referring to destructibility calculations that were done server side, as a means to offload local console resources for a greater level of immersion. Sadly, this never came to fruition, and many negative reviews followed suit upon Crackdown 3’s launch. The game was stuck in development for many years, and for the fans, that should have equated to an evolution of the series. Unfortunately, expectations of the fans weren’t met. For me personally…well, I actually enjoy the game, despite its flaws, so check out the review below to see if you should pick up the game.
What you're getting with Crackdown 3 is a modern take on Crackdown 1, with a fresh coat of 4k HDR paint. First, let’s get the negatives out of the way. It's clear the developers of Crackdown 3 played this one safe. There are around 6 objectives in the game, and they basically get copy\pasted around the map, acting as your main source of progression. Even though there are unique and distinguishable districts, you will come across the same monorail stations and power plants so many times to the point of it becoming tiring. Moving through the story involves completing all instances of each primary objective, which unlocks a gang leader mission along with its respective boss fight. The bosses are cool in design, even though they act as mere bullet sponges without any form of reactive damage until their health is at 0. Another issue with the game is with its aiming system. Like with Crackdown 1 and 2, you aim by quick-snapping to targets with the left trigger and shooting with the right. You can target different parts of the body by flicking the right stick up or down. Problem is, quick aiming isn’t an assist, but rather a necessity. Free aiming is near impossible, since bullets seem to go everywhere except your target. Once you get used to quick aiming, it’s usually not an issue unless an enemy is really far away, in which case the game won’t lock onto the target, which can be annoying.
Despite repetitive pacing, the game has a respectable amount of weapons, grenades, cars and upgrades to keep things interesting. You'll have access to rocket launchers, shotguns, machine guns, and even gravity weapons which make the game fun to plow through. The leveling system is the same as before too, so you'll constantly be improving your agility (jump and dash speed\height), strength (fists), driving (car skills), explosives (explosive damage) and firearms (gun damage). Graphically, the game looks quite sharp in 4k (even with dynamic resolution) and the draw distance is favorable for those trying to spot distanced agility orbs along rooftops. You’re looking at a 10+/- hours experience here, so take that for what its worth since the game is priced at 60 bucks (unless you opt to play it for free through Gamepass).
Conclusion:
In many ways, this game is simply more Crackdown, but I still recommend picking it up if you were a big fan in the original game and simply want a modern take on that old formula. I personally enjoy the game. It’s a fun, mindless experience. Collecting orbs, jumping across rooftops, hearing that old agency voice spout random crap…..it reminds me of the classic days of the Xbox 360, and that’s a good thing.
**As per this review, I have not tried wrecking zone, the multiplayer component. I heard it was of poor quality and I mainly played the campaign because that is all I enjoyed about the first one.
