If I’d only known how effective these are I’d have purchased one used rather than brand new. This will now be a hand me down to my son’s older cousin.
Some specifics on this bike:
Pros:
1 - great way to learn the hardest part of riding a bike (balance)
2 - lightweight and easy to carry, your little one will inevitably tire of it and you’ll have to carry it
3 - rubber tires. Full disclosure, I didn’t try one with plastic tires but there was something in me that wanted a bike with “real” rubber tires.
Cons:
1 - similar to another reviewer, the bike had gouge marks on the frame, I wasn’t all that happy about it but I figured it was going to be scratched up anyway so why bother with the hassle of returning it.
2 - when properly inflated the back wheel had an issue with the bead and the tire was never fully locked into the wheel frame. The bike still worked fine.
3 - pedals can’t be added In the future, this is potentially a short term purchase and at $70, is a bit steep in price. Wish I had heard of these when he was 2!
Best feature II love is it has a foot rest. My son had a Kinder Bike, and he wore it out. It worked great for its purpose, but he always had to dangle his feet after gaining enough momentum. I always felt that a foot rest would be cool and this one does have it.
Couple of things that may affect some parents. 1) This bike is pretty heavy, especially for a Toddler/Preschooler. 2) There isn't any brakes like they have on a Kinder Bike but my son never used the brakes so this feature is irrelevant to me but it may be an issue with some parents.
Update: It's been almost 2 years and this bike has held up well. I took the bike to local shop and it cost me $15- still worth it. Also, I emailed Schwinn and they sent me an extra tube. Anyway, this was my second experience with these "pedal-less" bikes and again the results do not disappoint. When they grew big enough and was ready, both my children transitioned from these bikes to regular bikes without training wheels in a matter of minutes. The biggest issue after they learned to use the regular bikes is turning the bike around. It's like waking and chewing gum for them, but once they get used to it then it's all downhill (pun intended).
BTW other than a little dust because my little girl has stopped using this, the bike looks almost out of the box new.
This is an excellent balance bike. Nice, solid bike with excellent paint job. Not too heavy or light. Just the right size and weight for the little ones to handle. It really ought to earn five stars if not for what appears to be quality control issues. The first shipment came without the handle bar. Thankfully, Amazon has amazing return policy in such cases, and we received a replacement shipment the day after reporting the problem. What we found interesting was that both packages were missing the rubber caps for the air valves. Granted, this is mostly just a very minor cosmetic issue, but, I've never seen bikes--new ones at that--that came without valve caps.
My 3.5yo, after exactly one week on this bike, successfully graduated to the big boy bike without training wheels. The pride and confidence of such accomplishment on a young child is simply incomparable. I have no doubt that learning to cruise on this balance bike was the key ingredient to this success.
