1) the touch screen acts weirdly sometimes, particularly when it is cold (i.e. - lower than 50 degrees F) out. What I mean by this is that the spot I touch on the screen (wearing gloves or not - makes no difference) actually activates the portion of the screen about 1/2 inch above it. So, for instance, when the keyboard is displayed and I try to enter the letter "H" the letter "D" appears. This occurs across all of the keyboard and other screens - it can be quite frustrating when trying to type in a name to search for while standing around in the cold.
This issue happens sporadically - I called garmin and they claimed not to ever have heard of it - and once the ambient temperature warms up a bit it resumes normal behavior. When it happens again (as I know it will) and I have a camera handy I will take photos to send to Garmin.
2) the business related data in the unit is sorely lacking (and I did download the latest update as of January 2018). That is, searching for restaurants it does not find a number of them in my local area that have all been in business for over 5 years. Naturally it would be understandable if a newly opened business has not yet made it into the data update, but the absence of longstanding places is unacceptable.
So for those reasons, 3 stars. On the upside, the screen is orders of magnitude better than the Nav IV's; it's even far superior to the top of the line Garmin Zumo 595; when my friend and I compared tour GPS' his 595 screen was almost as poor as my old Nav IV was. Where the Zumo 660 and Nav IV seemed to be pretty much identical save for some firmware stuff, the Nav VI doesn't even look like the Zumo 595. And while looks don't matter (though happily, the Nav VI does fit in the Zumo 660 mounts I installed on my bikes) the screen difference is enormous.
The other great improvement in the Nav VI over the IV is the speed at which it operates. From startup to the process of entering search names etc., the VI seems to be at least 10 times faster..where it would take the IV up to 2 seconds to respond when I pressed a letter key (searching for a restaurant name, for instance) on the VI the response time in almost instantaneous - again, a huge improvement.
So I'm keeping the VI because it's both infinitely easier to read in all light conditions as well as much quicker to respond to keypresses. The missing businesses thing is an annoyance, but hopefully someone at the BMW side of Garmin will figure out to put in more updated information. And the odd screen behavior (which, again, is sporadic) is something I will chase down when I can get some photos of it happening.
UPDATE 3/9/18: I have increased my review to 4 stars (from 3) due to the audible service shown by Garmin. When I called the 800 number to report the issues again (I had done so about a month ago just to put it in the record) this time, having gleaned my ID from my phone number, the rep just said they will issue a UPS label to take mine back and will replace it. My point is, the customer service has once again shown itself to be a highlight of the process.
Now, if any of you using Garmin GPS that haven't had this level of support, this may be due to the fact that the 800 number I called is specifically for the BMW OEM units, not the generics (it may also be used for other OEM models, like Harley, but the point is it is not the generic call in number). So perhaps they treated me better as a result of that - but in this day of horrific IVR (interactive voice response) systems and uncaring customer support teams, Garmin was pleasure to deal with.
