Delivering the ultimate soldering experience, the Weller SP40NKUS Soldering Iron Kit includes the SP40N co-molded hand soldering iron with three built-in LEDs for superior accuracy and application illumination. This medium duty iron produces 40 watts (up to 900 degrees F) for joining 12 AWG wire or smaller. It's ideal for use on electrical/electronic components, audio equip., RC hobbies, and more.

A round, soft grip, non-slip handle design helps relax the hand during extended use, and it easily provides a mechanism to roll and position the tip for application needs. A triangular front housing contains the high temperature long-life LEDs, which produce 25 lumens of light. Once the tip position is determined, the hand naturally gravitates to the triangular area to provide a more stable and effective way to control the tip position. It features a stainless steel heater construction, easily tip changes, and a durable cord with a 5-foot reach. This soldering iron is backed by a 7-year limited warranty.

I have used the 5.00 cheap soldering irons and they do not produce enough heat to melt solder unless you give them 4 min to heat up and the heat dissipates rapidly if soldering anything larger then micro connections. This is a true 40-watt iron like they used to be made 20 years ago. Stay away from the cheap kits for 5.99 or similar.

I bought this to use on my jewelry and so far it works great. I use some silver solder to attach wires to pieces and attach pieces to each other. I'm still learning how to solder so I'll update this when I know more, but a friend recommended this Weller soldering iron and it works great for my needs. I like that it has flat edges around the middle so you can set it down and not worry about the tip touching your surface or the iron rolling away. It's easy to hold on to and the extra tips are a big plus. The only thing is I wish the cord were just a bit longer, but I can get an extension cord to fix that. Overall, very happy with this.

- Stand is a literally piece of bent metal (22 ga. steel I think) and makes iron not truly stable.
(Has fallen several times now and burned a few things)

If this is your first soldering iron, you won't be upset. Or if you need an affordable one that you might use once or twice a year. The LEDs are a little bit of a gimmick, but I honestly wished more irons had them. That being said, it should not be used for extensive amounts of time and an additional stand should be used if you plan on doing so.

Recommended:
Beginners, or the Occasional Intermediate use.
(Keep in mind lack of temp. control and feeling cheap. It "gets the job done".)

I bought one of these after using a friends, and I'm never buying anything else. These get HOT, and they do so very quickly. I have many rolls of solder and I needed enough heat to deal with anything I happen to pick up. I also ordered a cup of flux paste and dip the tip (just the last 1/8 inch) in that after wiping it off once in a while.
The one thing I will note is that the entire tip can and will hold solder. If you notice that the tip looks fat and you have no ball of solder, it has spread all the way around the tip and its time to clean it, flux dip, and then let it sit for a while to burn a little and oxidize behind the flux, so that it stops sucking solder all the way up.

The LEDs are very useful when soldering in not-ideal amounts of light. I often use them to inspect my joint, as my head is usually in the way of my light source.

This is an awesome soldering iron. I use it for stippling and it works flawlessly. I have used it three times today. At separate time, and cam right back on without an issues. The led lights are not as bright as I thought they would be. Just please be careful, I dropped it when I rotated my chair and it caught the cord. Do not even try to catch it! It landed on my carpet, and was there for less than 1 sec. The spot was completely burnt. So it obviously gets hot. But I haven't had any issues. Will update later if anything decides not to work.

I am new to soldering so I bought a $10 iron and had problems getting it to 'wet' from day one. I ordered this one thinking that if I mess up a tip I can replace just the tip. Haven't had to. From day one this iron worked great. The only complaint I have for this iron is that it feels like it gets too hot. I started unplugging it in between component placing. I have since wired a dimmer switch and outlet box to plug the iron into. With the dimmer switch on half way I can leave it plugged in through the whole job. Excellent iron but I have no idea how to use the black stick tool that came with it. I have been using it for through hole components.
