Product Description

Landscapers & contractors are demanding more cordless alternatives to corded & gas-powered outdoor power equipment. Makita is meeting demand with an expanding line of cordless OPE, including the 18V x2 LXT (36V) Brushless chain saw kit (model XCU03PT1). With zero emissions, lower noise, & considerably less maintenance, the chainsaw is a welcome solution for cutting & trimming applications. It's powered by two 18V LXT batteries for 36V power & run time, but without leaving the strongly-preferred 18V battery platform. & with the efficient Makita outer rotor Brushless motor with direct drive system, users get high power efficiency that is equivalent to a gas chainsaw. The chain saw has a 14" Guide bar & the Makita-built motor with variable speed delivers 0-3, 940 FPM For increased cutting speed, but with less noise (only 100dB(A)). It has zero emissions & reduced maintenance: there's no engine oil to change, no spark plug to replace, & no air filter or muffler to clean. & there's no need to drain the fuel for storage. Simply pick it up, load two 18V LXT Lithium-Ion batteries, & the saw is ready to use. Convenience features include a "tool-less" Chain adjustments, A front hand guard engineered to actuate chain brake When engaged, an electric brake for maximum productivity, & more. Impressive Little Chainsaw

Impressive Little Chainsaw
I was looking for a small chainsaw to use around the house and on small projects. I had an old Poulan Pro but it has seen better days. I'm slowly converting many of my gas tools over to electric so that's where I started. I have a number of Ryobi One tools and really like them so that was where I started looking. The reviews for the Ryobi showed two things I did not like. One was a lack of a chain-break. That's just a glaring omission in my opinion. The second was a propensity to drool bar and chain oil. This was a common complaint in Amazon reviews as well as professional comparison reviews. In these pro reviews, the Makita did very well when it was tested. I have always loved Makita tools and have a number of their 18V tools so I decided to bite the bullet and spend twice what the Ryobi cost but hopefully end up with a better tool that will give me years of service. I'm not disappointed. The kit I bought came with an extra set of batteries and the dual fast charger. The only real workout I've given it so far, if I can call it that was pruning a large tree in my front yard that required removing and cutting up a number of low hanging limbs. The largest limbs were around 8 inches at the trunk. Butter. The chain speed seemed close to what I'm used to with gas chainsaws but it seemed odd to work so well making so little noise. I worked on that tree for several hours and the batteries stayed at 4 bars - I do really like how you can check the battery level on the tool itself. The chain adjustment is simple and effective. It has a flow adjustment for the bar and chain oil but the factory setting seems good. It's not a super-light tool so if that's a consideration, this isn't a saw I'd want to use up in a tree - though it would probably work OK. There are saws with top handles that would be better for that. It's no heavier than a good gas saw though. Makita just has that premium build quality and strong materials tend to be heavy. So far I'm very impressed and look forward to years of service out of this little work-horse.When I was deciding whether to get the 14" or 16" saw, I compared the parts lists for both. The bar and chain are the only differences. I decided to get the 14" because that will be more than enough for what I generally need but I can always get a 16" bar and chain for an instant upgrade.Update 12/2021: My second job with this saw was a massive tree that fell and crushed a chicken coop on my brother's farm. He and my dad had matching 18" Stihl gas saws (the lower priced models) and though I'm sure I just keep my chains sharper I was cutting circles around them. It reached the point I was the only one running my saw. I was finally stopped in my tracks with a simple ground strike that bent my chain. I didn't have a spare. These narrow chains cut like butter but they are more delicate than traditional chains. I now always keep a spare just in case. I've also cut and remove several good sized trees that fell in both of my neighbors' yards during a big storm. The more I use this saw the more I love it. If you're on the fence, just do it. This is a great saw.Update 3/31/2023: This saw is still the bomb. It has been my go-to saw for clearing trees on our local trails. The 14" bar is short enough to stay out of the way in my backpack while riding, but long enough to get most jobs done. I'm still using the original batteries, and knock on wood, they're still going strong. I love this saw!
