(Update, 8 months after the original comment: It still works perfectly with non-clumping silica cat litter for a week without cleaning!)
The negative experiences I read in Amazon were about the noise, disposable receptacles, and stuck litter on the rakes. Here are my experiences with those matters:
The noise is not more than a hairdryer, so it does not disturb me much.
The disposable receptacles could be a problem if you always have to buy them. But it is not necessary because you can reuse them by using bin bags in them. I can recommend you to put double receptacles and lids to make it more stable.
The most common problem was stuck litter in the rakes and at the bottom of the box, also the motor struggling to move forward through the clumped litter. I tried 6 different cat litters to have the best results and 2 of them didn’t have those problems at all. Those two were light-type litters, one is non-clumping silica and another is clumping plant-based litters. Any brand of non-clumping silica and/or clumping plant-based litters work very well. Here are my experiences:
-Clumping bentonite litter: The litter could be stuck on the rakes and you need to clean the rakes and the bottom. But feces and urine go into the container, although it may force the motor. It is necessary to clean the bottom by emptying the box usually. But it doesn’t smell except the stuck ones on the rakes. As a result: not very practical.
-Non-clumping bentonite litter: It is stuck a little bit on the rakes, but a lot of on the bottom. Because urine doesn’t go in the container and it does not absorb the smell much, it smells a lot. As a result: not recommended.
-Clumping plant-based litter: It doesn’t stick in the rakes or on the bottom, neither forces motor while working because of lightness. It works perfectly on the box. However, the light pieces of the litter were carried on the paws of my cats to the other rooms, so I had to give up using it. As a result: recommended.
-Non-clumping plant-based litter: Similar to the non-clumping litter. Because urine doesn’t go in the container and it has a low absorbing capacity, it smells. Also, it is stuck a little bit on the rakes. As a result: not recommended.
-Clumping silica litter: Although it's supposed to clump and take the urine in the container, it doesn't clump. The fine silica pieces get stuck on the bottom because of the urine, and get harder and higher in time so force the rakes. It is quite hard to clean the bottom from the stuck litter. As a result: not recommended.
-Non-clumping silica litter: Although it doesn’t clump and urine isn’t taken in the container, it works perfectly! The litter doesn’t smell up to a week for two cats. Because the litter pieces are light, it doesn’t force the motor, so motor work perfect for feces. After a week, I emptied the container bag and the whole litter. There was no suck in the rake or on the bottom. As a result: highly recommended!
I can recommend to empty and clean the whole box and the rakes weekly for the best performance of the product.
(I had a single cat version for my two cats (because of the limited space) and it works for two cats very well. The first product I had was not working properly, the motor stops working in the middle of cleaning. But when I sent the video of it to the customer service, I was immediately sent a new product and the new one works very well. This is as important as the product’s function for me. Without very good customer service of Amazon and LitterMaid, I wouldn’t buy a new one and I wouldn’t use it.)

10/17/21 WELL! This LitterMaid continues to wear me out. I just shut it down! It took me half an hour just to clean the cat waste from everywhere except the litter bin. This piece of cat waste is horrible! I got it as clean as I could get it for the video. I was to embarrassed to let you see the mess it made. The LitterMaid I owned back around the year 2000 was a dream. Never! Never had problems like this. Wet cat waste was smeared all over the sides and rake. None was in the litter bin. I still need to clean some from the back left side. I am to old for this mess. $80.00 down the drain. And being on Soc. Sec. This hurt! LITTERMAID, YOU SUCK!
UPDATE 11-11-21, WELL! For a LitterMaid self cleaning litter box this is a shameful product. LitterMaid was a dependable product almost in every Cat household for many years. It was a necessity in my home because of shift work. I knew that my Classic from year 1999 was working dependably while I was at the hospital. This item today is not any of the above. It does not remove the wet waste very well, problems with wet waste sticking to bottom, and or crumbling, therefore waste not removed. The new design is the problem. You must have 3-4 inches of litter in litter bed. Why did they change the design? Waste of money. Not dependable. Bring back old design. Be number 1 again.
UPDATE!!!! 12 -3-21. I used to work a lot of different shifts. But the LitterMaid in 1999 was a true Gem. It worked purrfectly from day one. Why they changed the design to these new blue ones has my brain in a spin. Their Corncob Litter I just purchased says to put 3-4 inches in litter box. Max line I think is 1.5 inches. Not sure, but maybe 1.5 inches. So how is the new Blue supposed to work. No matter which litter you use it is designed to fail.

But this machine is amazing, I have this and the robot litter tray as I have 4 cats some prefer this one some the other but it’s a fantastic little machine, very happy with my purchase.
It is abit of trial and error to get the right litter, Iv personally found sani cat extra clumping litter works the best with this as I lose less clean litter than a lot of the others.
This clump is not scooped and must be scraped off the rake. This clump also turns the rake into a paddle. The paddle pushes, not through the litter, but against all the litter between it and the end of the litter box. The barely-adequate motor that moves the rake will loudly fail to move, and then the litter box will register an error. It will retract the rake and try to scoop again. Eventually, the litter box will halt entirely, flash a red error light, and leave the rake in the middle of the litter box.
And if this happens in the middle of the night, it may wake you up. Or you may notice it in the morning, after your cat (or cats) have had 5 or 6 hours to find the new mid-rake orientation and make the decision to poop directly on top of the rake, or pee behind the rake forming an unrakeable clump, or use the mounded portion of litter in front of the rake, spreading it everywhere.
I have had this litter box for about 8 months, and it has felt like 2 years. I bought it because I wanted to reduce the amount of litter scooping I do. If everything goes right, all you need to do with this box is empty the tray every few days. But nothing goes right with this box. I've gone from scooping litter every day or two to cursing and scraping around a halted rake multiple times a day. The cardboard box it came in is literally a better solution than the device itself.
