It's easy to hold, easy to use, and I can imagine it coming in handy in any number of animal or home emergencies. But it has already come in handy in a variety of non-emergency situations, and I'm happy with it. Just have some common sense--be careful about distance from the object it's focused on, and don't use it continually for an extended time. Given the bargain price, I'm not expecting to ride it hard, so to speak, and I don't think higher expectations are reasonable. But it has never quit working for me so as to cool off, and I'm familiar enough with a wide variety of tools to know how to be respectful of them.
It gets to a hot temperature within seconds. I use it mostly for heat-shrink tubing.
However, this past weekend I used it for something different. I had a number of items with ceramic attached to metal using JBWeld epoxy. JBWeld will lose its adhesion at approximately 600 degrees F. I was able to use this unit and within 15-30 seconds break the JBWeld bond. I repeated this process for about a dozen items.
If I never do anything else with this unit, this one task's value will have paid for this unit and then some.
I like it. It's easy. It works.
