For the price, you can't beat this set to provide a good result while allowing for easy entry into the hobby. After you get into a few projects and start to figure out where your heavy use is, you'll start seeing some wear on specific bits and you can replace them, but for your average beginner, you can't beat this.
This set has worked well through numerous projects with multiple species of hardwoods (white & red oak, hard & soft maples, cherry, purple heart, walnut). Used in a Bosch 1617 fixed and plunge base as well as a Porter Cable 7518 in a router table.
While I wouldn't recommend the MLCS kit for heavy usage, I would recommend beginners to pick up this inexpensive kit so that you can get to know the art of routing on the cheap. Once you know what kind of cuts or edge work you like to do, you can then use that knowledge to replace your favorite router bits with the more expensive ones.
As with most bits, these come all greased up. You want to clean that off before using them (I used isopropyl alcohol). Be careful and handle the bits with care as they can cut you if you handle them recklessly.
The wood box is a nice touch especially at <40$.
Of course, as a novice I ran the half inch straight bit through a small nail hidden in my material. It made quite a clatter, and I thought the bit was toast, but it just nicked a little of the enamel. The bit still cuts like a champ.
Also, as a novice, I can't place these on the spectrum of quality that a professional craftsman might see, but I have used a couple of dull bits borrowed from a friend, and these are far superior in sharpness and smooth operation.
Yes, buy them. You'll be happy knowing you paid for this set what you could have paid for one bit, or one third of a bit, and these will be more than serviceable for random projects for years.
I've probably ran 400 board feet through the 3/4" straight bit by now. It still cuts smoothly and cleanly in my 3hp router. I can't speak yet to all the bits or obviously the longevity of this set, however they seem as well constructed with the same blade thickness, construction and overall quality so far as any I've used. As a hobbyist or DIY'er with the occasional big job you can't go wrong with this set.
I don't have the experience to compare to a really high quality set, but I know they get wildly expensive, so this covers my woodworking needs well.

Cons: bits are sharpened unevenly which could pose a problem for cnc or high speed routing. The welds holding the carbide to the body are a little rough. Coating is inconsistent and flakes off around the edges. These are hand sharpened with a file as evident by the gouge marks in the shaft from them using it as a tool rest (cmon guys). No idea if these will throw the bits off balance yet.
Overall these will still meet your needs but i suspect theyre used bits with new carbide tips welded on and re-coated. They cut ALRIGHT but i'm not brave enough to put them through an abuse test for fear of the carbide flying off at 24k rpm.
I took this route to get my shop started as opposed to spending hundreds on a quality Freud set only to find out i won't be using half of them regularly. Considering this is the best priced 1/2 shank set on amazon its really not worth crying about and will suite my intened purposes.
