Customers are mixed about the omnidirectional antenna. Some mention it's omni-directional, but does have a little bit of gain with the split, while others say it is very directional and needs to be tuned. "So the other reviews pan this antenna for not being omnidirectional...." Read more

"Easy to install. Shorter range non-directional. Just put it up and plug it in." Read more

"...However, the S config was noticably better, but very dependent on directional clocking, and which way it was spun around in the horizontal plane...." Read more

Better, but only marginally
4 Stars
Better, but only marginally
I guess the younger folks laugh at us old timers who still want to listen to independent terrestrial radio, but I like the nostalgia, and the cost (free, I was a SiriusXM subscriber for over a decade). I have an old stereo in my shop (like most guys who spend time in their garages do) but struggled with good reception of the couple of FM stations that I listen to. I tried the dinky wire dipole antenna but it was lousy. I bought this antenna hoping for clear, strong, FM stereo locked music without an antenna mast on my roof. I tried this thing in both the halo and S configurations. For my application, the halo config was not much better than the dipole. However, the S config was noticably better, but very dependent on directional clocking, and which way it was spun around in the horizontal plane. I could now get reasonable reception, but only if I "tuned" the antenna direction to the transmission tower location for each station. The 2 stations I wanted were about 65 deg apart. So I mounted it to the ceiling of my shop with short length of thin wall tubing, a washer welded to one end, and a lag screw run up through the tubing, washer, and into a ceiling joist. Without tightening down hard, I can now reach up with broom handle and just spin the antenna to direction I want. It works, mostly, but don't expect miracles with this thing, especially in the halo config.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect FM Antenna!
Reviewed in the United States on April 8, 2023
I was skeptical that this antenna could work much better than the usual dipole antenna that is often included with receivers. This antenna beat my expectations.

I tested the signal strength using GQRX SDR software on a mac. The dbFS scale on this app measures decibels relative to full scale. It's a relative measurement. With GQRX tuned to 93.9 FM (WNYC in NYC) and a dipole antenna oriented the right way with respect to the broadcast antenna, I observed a reading of about -45 dbFS on GQRX. With this Stellar Labs circular folded dipole antenna with the connector end pointing toward the broadcast antenna, I observed -23 dbFS for the same broadcast signal. That's quite impressive!

Based on some other reviews and Q&A, I was sure that I could do better by replacing the built-in balanced-unbalanced transformer "balun" with a quality balun such as a Channel Master CM-3203. So I opened up the plastic housing to disconnect the built-in balun. But I didn't find any balun there. Instead, there was a printed circuit board with the F-connector and some strange zig-zag etch pattern (see pictures). In any case, I removed the PCB and connected the Channel Master balun to the two ends of the antenna (where the screw holes are). The signal strength results with the channel master balun were disappointing. The best I got was -36 dbFS for the same broadcast signal and the antenna oriented the right way. So whatever contraption they have on the PCB works well.

Very pleased with the performance of this antenna. I plan to install it in the attic. Hopefully, that will give even better performance.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not omnidirectional....and there's more!
Reviewed in the United States on April 29, 2021
So the other reviews pan this antenna for not being omnidirectional. That's not its only problem...based on tests done with a RigExpert AA-600 it's not really a good FM antenna....I guess up high and away from lots of metal stuff in your attic, it will work better than the little wire dipoles that come with stereos. This antenna in a round configuration as advertised is more of an Air Band antenna than for the FM broadcast band. How to fix? First, ditch the round configuration and go with the "S" configuration. (see pic). Second, the built in connection needs to be bypassed with a $1.00 or less 300 ohm to 75 ohm balun transformer. (Find them easy on Amazon!) That makes it an even better antenna....a little better for FM but still better on the Air band. Now to pull the frequency down: Some people tell you to put a piece of aluminum tape or a wire on it and that works. If you don't have a way to sweep the antenna, where to put it? I decided to use some RFI snap on chokes. I used 4 - 13 mm chokes from a Cedmon 20 piece kit (I needed some of the other sizes, but it's a very reasonably priced kit and on Amazon!) See the attached pic for the placement. This, with the transformer, make this a decent FM antenna. My findings were not from a one off defective antenna. I bought a second antenna and these modifications hold true on it as well. They work even better when you stack the two antennas and combine them with a JoinTenna or other combiner. (When stacked, you only need two RFI chokes on each and you can dispense with the transformer, too. I used the length of the antenna's beam as the separation between the two, or about 18 inches.) Testing was done on both metallic and non-metallic mounting masts and there was no significant changes to the antenna's behavior. My antennas cost me $18.99 each and I see them sold at Home Depot for twice that....they are just ok but I had a lot of fun experimenting with them. They're easy to assemble and the attaching hardware has stood up to me taking them apart and putting them back together several times.
