But not great. And they looked terrible.
This pulls in a few more stations, comes with an adaptor, which makes it easy to hook to my Old Marantz receiver. It has never sounded better. Plus I can hang it on the wall and it looks modern and is small. No interference at all and my favorite station FM talk and is low powered. Some don't like this, but it's Omni directional and works great for me. I would give it a try, I think you will like it.
I may return it & buy a higher end antenna. I live in NYC, so my signal strength fluctuates, I'm guessing due to multipath interference confusing the tuner, and here I am driving Klipsch Heresy speakers & listening to a muddy mono radio signal with simulated stereo... talk about heresy...
And I really like NYC radio: WBGO, WKRC, WQXR, WNYC, etc. Criminal.
First thing; the Terk puts out a 75 ohm signal; my Onkyo tuner/amplifier takes a 300 ohm connection & I questioned readers & got all sorts of answers about what I'd need to connect it and the answers were all over the lot, so here's the skinny: if you're in the same boat as me you'll need a balun adapter (300/75 ohm adapter: bal/un: balanced/unbalanced), then you're good to go.
So here's the rest of it; I connected everything and nothing: signal strength meter in the mud, only mono available.. as per my usual. I move the Terk, set it up, down, sideways, on its head. Mud.
Come back 2 hours later, fire it up and... bingo! I have it tuned to 88.3, generally a harder station to grab. A Very strong stereo signal, stronger than I've ever gotten with my dipole; I can turn off the simulated stereo and the mono/mute. I change stations... back to mud. Tune it back to 88,3: now it's mud too. Muttering darkly, I leave the room.
Couple hours later, I'm back, turn it on: power; a strong signal! On ALL my stations. That evening, mud again.
Anyway that's my story. Obviously I can pick up a strong signal... sometimes; so, I'm not in a dead spot. Am I gonna send back this $15 ant. & buy the $130 one? Dunno. Buy a new receiver or tuner? I doubt they'll be anywhere near what I have now, since no manufacturer is putting any money into radio anymore.
If you have any informed thoughts on this conundrum, please comment knowledgeably, and I'll be grateful. Thanks -L.
I ignored the reviews on this antenna because I figured "it's an antenna, how bad could it be?" Well this antenna gave me 0 improvement to the bare coaxial cable that I had hooked up, and actually made one of the 2 stations worse.
In fairness, both the coaxial cable I used and the Terk antenna both worked better when I turned off the TV. The antenna was cheap, but since the coaxial cable works better by itself, I don't see any reason to keep it. I bought it through a 3rd party seller and have requested a refund. We'll see what happens.
I researched FM antennas before picking this one up, and it appears the Terk antenna is the only reasonably priced one. I'm not spending $30+ for a radio antenna. This is upsetting, but I guess I'll just keep the TV on at home and the radio on in the car. I gave the antenna a 2 because it somewhat works, so it's not a complete dud.
