The only reason I give this 2 stars is that it can be used for engine, transmission, airbag or ABS codes. The 4 and 5 star reviews must not have needed to read any other codes. For example it doesn't read codes for climate control, Air conditioning, instruments, etc.
Also another significant down side for me is that it doesn't read codes on other manufacturers cars. I tried it on a 2005 Ford and it only puts out error messages. Other VAG Com code readers claim to work as a basic ODB2 code reader for other manufacturers.
Here's my tip. Do some research on the year and model of your VW/Audi car and figure out what VAG Com or VCDS reader you will need. The requirements change every few years and are different depending on the model of the car.
I gave it 5 stars since, while it isn't perfect, it cleared my airbag code cheaply and easily. Plus I now have a scanner for all my cars.
My stock stereo RCD510 revision AC died, as they all do. I took apart the dash and pulled some fuses to check them. Probably while the car was still on, and this tripped the airbag light. So I knew there was not an actual airbag fault or harness issue, as is also common.
Disconnecting the battery terminals and touching the negative and positive cables together (battery fully disengaged) for 15 mins to discharge the electronics did not work. It reset everything, but the airbag light on the dashboard is most likely stored permanently, hard coded in the cars computer and actively needs to be erased.
The 2010 Jetta has a MK5 body, but with mostly MK6 electronics inside. I say mostly, because the following OBDII scanner seems to be able to fix the airbag issue due to the fact that those computer bits are probably carry over MK5 electronics.
It should work just fine for all MK5 Jetta cars up to 2009. Same I imagine for all Golf MK5s.
It works, but has some issues. On my 2001 MK4 Golf 1.8T it cleared all the codes just fine. On my Jetta 2010 it scanned and found the codes. A few times it reported Linkage Failed, just restarted and replugged and it worked again. It too found the codes, but when I erased it, it said Erase Failed! But, the codes were gone when I rescanned it. Also, the airbag light has disappeared and not come back on since then.
It seems to have also erased about 4 other codes, a few were battery codes, which makes sense, since I had drained the system. Not sure if it will erase the Check Engine light in all cases, but I surmise it should.
If, for some reason the airbag light comes back on, I'll let you all know! Hope this helps.
One thing you may experience, after the reader read the SRS system and displayed the DTC, when I selected to erase the code, it displayed an error that it failed to clear it. So I re-ran a scan, and it found none and displayed that there were no error codes. Strange glitch I guess, because after I took the key out of the ignition, then started the car, the airbag light went off, and has stayed off after several trips in the last 24 hours.
Some of the reviews claiming it didn't work for them and it displayed a link error, they likely did not have their key in the 2nd accessory position. Make sure after you plug it in, that you turn/push your key to the position right before starting the engine. You'll know you have it in the correct position if your A/C fan blows if you switch it on.
Definitely give this a try before any of the other, more expensive options, if you just need to clear a code. I didn't need access to all the fine tuning options a full VAG-COM reader gives, so I saved tons of $$ with this product that did just what I needed it to do.
