I like the size of the R1. My old X50 was pretty compact, but this one is noticeably smaller. Not by a whole lot, but smaller is better. Comes with a sticky-cup that works really well. Clear color display, bright enough for sunny days. I run at night with the backlit buttons and display screen blacked out. When an alert sounds, display lights up until threat passes - then back to total blackout. I like that. You can choose between voice alerts and tone-only, but I wasn't impressed with voice. So I'll stick with tones - just an old-school thing, I guess. Menu is easy to access and navigate, but choosing the right options can be a challenge. It'll take some time and experimenting before I get it dialed in. However, the default settings seem to work pretty well.
On a 70-mile interstate drive in moderatel traffic, the RD falsed on K-band only once. I'm sure I passed more than one BSM vehicle, so it does appear that K-band filtering had an effect. I don't expect 100% rejection, but it looks promising.
Cruised a small city, got 3 confirmed hits. One moving, two stationary. R1 squawked in plenty of time. The moving car came from behind on a flat, open stretch, and Ka alert first sounded about 1 minute before I got a visual. Although I can't estimate acquisition distance, it does appear that rear detection is pretty good. That's a save.
Distance from the stationary cars (both Ka) was about 1/4 mile or so both times. This was in the heart of the city, both cops had good cover between buildings. Typical ambush traps. The RD gave enough warning both times.
I got many K-band falsies in the city, and confirmed most were automatic doors @24.1XX. I tried jacking with the options, but that didn't help. There may be no cure for that, since they operate at the same frequencies LEO's use. Since most of my driving will be highway miles, I'm not too concerned about heavy clutter.
UPDATE: 1/12/18
Have logged over 2500 miles now, mostly highway and rural two-lanes. Ka range seems to be as good or better than my old Passport (which was excellent). The top story, though, is the reduction of false alarms on the highway. A few K-band falsies here and there, most of which appeared to be from other vehicles. Each and every Ka-band alert I got (that was a confirmed hit) came in plenty of time to take action. Since there is very little K-band used by police in my state, I could probably safely disable that band altogether. I'll leave it enabled for now. This RD has made highway travel much less annoying.
In town K-band falsies predictably increased, but auto-mute keeps them tolerable. Once I turned X-band off, there wasn't much difference between city and highway modes - so I just leave it on highway outside of larger cities. I do wish there were more display options, and the DIM function is a bit kludgy - but I've adjusted. Very close to perfect at a reasonable price. Recommended.
The device has a sleek and modern design that easily sticks to my windshield with the included suction cups. Installation was quick and hassle-free, and the clear and concise instructions made it easy to set up.
The 360-degree detection ensures that I am always alerted to potential speed traps, even from behind. The voice alerts are clear and easy to understand, allowing me to stay focused on the road ahead.
I have used this radar detector on multiple road trips and have been extremely impressed by its ability to detect radar signals from far away. It's incredibly accurate and reliable, and I feel much more confident driving knowing that I have this device with me.
Overall, I highly recommend the Uniden R1 Extreme Long Range Radar Laser Detector 360 Degree Dsp Voice Alert to anyone looking for a reliable and high-performance radar detector. The ease of installation, clear voice alerts, and accurate detection make it well worth the investment.
KA band has at least close to a mile range from one experience I had with a local small town cruiser parked tucked away a mile down from me. I haven't had it long enough to speak much more on the KA or the ability to pick up signals from the side or back or the other bands yet since it's still riding season here and I'm on the bike mostly.
The display is brighter than many and no problems even in bright sunlight so far. Could be easier to update the firmware using the computer but wasn't really a problem for me since I'm relatively handy with computers but those who aren't will likely have issues updating theirs. Check youtube. There's at least a couple of videos out there that might help. I had to download the windows drivers for the computer to work with the detector and then the utility for it to interface between the detector and windows and install and identify the firmware updates and voice upgrade.
Mine was current out of the box on the firmware as it turned out so must have been new stock from the later batches made after mid August.
So far I love it we'll see how she performs over time but I expect good things form what I've seen so far.
