Off Plan (Whispering Key) Kindle Edition
Falling for a man was nowhere in my five-step plan.
I came to Whispering Key from O’Leary as a career move. Mason Bloom, doctor to the stars at a swanky resort on a private island? Heck yes.
What I did not come for was romance, because I have been there, done that, have an ex-girlfriend to prove it, and frankly was distinctly underwhelmed by the whole endeavor.
Yet from the moment I set foot on this island, nothing goes the way I’d expected.
The resort’s falling apart. The island’s inhabitants are ridiculous... and ridiculously charming. The whole place is awash in stories of shipwrecks and treasure.
Then there’s Fenn Reardon: Gorgeous. Infuriating. Male.
And did I mention infuriating?
The man is the eye of the hurricane upending my life. He pushes every one of my buttons. He makes me feel crazy. Out of control. And more alive than I have ever felt before.
I find myself craving his company, longing for his touch, kissing him on the beach, wanting him in my bed… and questioning just how straight I really am.
Falling for Fenn was not in my plans… but I’m starting to think the key to happiness might be going off plan entirely.

Oh my gods, I loved this book so much. It was sweet, it was romantic, it was hilarious, it was every single thing I wanted. I hoped I'd get a fun little island story, and I got that and SO much more. I should say, I was ready to start rampaging about Big Rafe and what a con artist he was and it was so much more than "bruising egos" that he did to people and how dare he talk to Fenn like that, and then the schmuck goes and has an arc! 😂 Seriously, that moment when he talks to his boys made me tear up, it was so beautiful. I'd already been willing to admit he was a complex character that I was leaning more towards hating, but the writing... ugghhhhh this writing is so freaking good it hurts.
The way Fenn pines and years and wants Mason so much was EVERYTHING. Honestly, this would've been five stars if not for three tiny things that kept it from being absolutely perfect in my eyes:
- The treasure hunt thing? I'm glad it was resolved quickly when they found it, but it just took up too much space throughout the story and I didn't really care about the mystery or the backstory there.
- There were too many instances in the middle of smut scenes when they would stop to give a one-liner that just didn't come off very cool or funny or sexy or anything, so it just felt like constant interruptions to hear something really cheesy or unfunny.
- The stupid Victoria scene? I hated her so I didn't give a crap that she was happy and her phone call was all for her own sake. I didn't care to see her redeemed, she didn't deserve it, and she wasn't.
Still, I really loved the characters, the plot, the writing, the YEARNING. It was so good, I have no other words. Highly recommend.
I don’t know if I can love characters who are this ill informed on such important issues.
All jokes aside—which, no, I’m not joking about the facts, just that it would make me hate these MCs—I was here for Mason and Fenn. I was ready for their story before I even read the OG series. I almost skipped it to read this book, but my brain wouldn’t let me, and I mean I would’ve gone back to read it, but I wanted to read this book first for some reason. I have problems, obviously.
While the whole thing is unbelievable and highly rare/improbable even if it did have a chance at being real, I enjoyed the depth of the characters and the emotional growth they went through. I also really enjoy the little subplot lines that weave around the MCs as the story progresses.
Aside from my usual gripes about inconsistency and mechanics, and a few other little things here and there, this was overall a really great read. I’m enjoying the island and the vibe that it’s basically like a less populated and beachy O’Leary.
3.5/5. And no, I’m not holding the very wrong and awful Doctor Who opinions in this book against it. But I AM judging. Hard. 😒

My first solo book by May and definately not my last. I'm excited for more!
I loved Fenn from the off. Slightly grumpy but funny with it. Winner! He was wallowing in self pity stuck on an Island feeling like he had no hope of a decent future. He didn't see what he actually had until Mason came along and showed him.
Mason was wonderful too. Equally lost in self pity he was at least trying though by starting a new life in the Key. Obviously he was a bit like a fish out of water at first but when he meets grumpy Fenn things start to change.
I loved how these two clashed at first in the funniest of ways. I had so many laughs. Both as snarky as each other the passion and fire was inevitable. Poor Fenn was in denial and pushed Mason away. Thankfully Mason wasn't a quitter! He knew what he had and went for it. I loved his story. How he accepted the feelings he got from Fenn and wanted to try.
So sweet both of them! The supporting characters were funny and loveable. The Key is the place to be. Its home! I'd slot right in with the crazy and i loved every second.
The whole story made me swoon. It made me smile. It made me happy. Can't wait to read the rest! Now on to Beale and Toby!
