Product Description
This is a reissue of our vintage Audeze headphone model, with the wonderful warm tonality of the original LCD-2 headphones without Fazors. Note: this is slightly warmer sounding than our regular LCD-2. New for 2021, we’ve added the economy carry case at no additional cost. As Jeff Torgay in Tone Audio wrote: “Everyone who took the Audeze LCD-2 phones for a test drive arrived at the same conclusion – they are the most enjoyable headphones I’ve ever experienced.”

I preface this by saying I prefer the Planar sound over the Dynamic driver sound by a large margin. I’m not a bass-head but there is nothing like the low end slam of Planar Magnetic drivers to balance out the sound in my opinion. I want to feel the music not just hear it. I prefer a laid back wide/layered warmer sound signature. I am a casual listener, not an analytical listener and I dislike a bright sound. The LCD2c is very close to my end game. It has impressed me track after track. I also EQ to tweak to my liking. Both the M1070 and LCD2c drivers are equally capable and take EQ very well. With EQ the LCD2c sounds like the next level up in the audiophile world plain and simple.
The following is compared to the M1070 (with the pleather pads) and is my opinion of course. The build quality is better on the LCD2c. The Monoprice is not bad but does not compare to Audeze. The LCD2c is lighter and feels lighter on the head and is also more comfortable. To get good clamp pressure on the M1070 you literally have to bend them. It has not been a problem for me but I just think it’s not an ideal setup for longevity. Both require an amp to really get the most out of the drivers. I would not run these off of an Iphone. As for sound: The low end is the best attribute of the M1070 and, its close but, I feel like has more sub-bass out of the box. With EQ the LCD2c bass can hit just as deep and sounds cleaner and more controlled. If you like a laid back immersive signature, like I do, then listening to some Deadmou5 flac files on either will blow your mind. The similar low end is to be expected as the drivers are of similar size. The mids are more fwd on the LCD2c and more textured. Vocals are up front and center on the LCD2c whereas the M1070 I feel vocals blend into the mix more. The vocals could be shouty at times on the LCD2c but EQ can take the edge off that if needed - I personally don’t mind it. The M1070 mids are not bad and are much better than the 4XX and on par with the 6XX although in many cases I preferred vocals in the M1070 over the 6XX. Overall the LCD2c mid-range just out-resolves the Monoprice. The higher frequencies on the M1070 are where the drivers are lacking. To me the highs can sound sloppy (for lack of a better word) and recessed. This was the main reason I began the search for an upgrade. They are not terrible, they just never stand out in a positive way. The LCD2c top end balances out the sound image much better imo. There is more resolution and I can hear more from each separate instrument without it becoming tinny or sibilant. This brings me to soundstage. LCD2c winner…and I say that full knowing that the M1070 is pretty good in this dept as well. Both are enjoyable to listen to and both offer similar traits but everything is just more resolving, more detailed, has more clarity and is more “well-mannered” with the LCD2c. If the LCD2c’s are 90% of ideal than the M1070’s are 75%-80%. With the LCD2c I am on the stage with the vocalist close in front of me and the band all around me. The M1070 is close but just not at that level.. In general the LCD2c provides a more premium experience in sound as well as build right down to the cable.
The question you need to answer for yourself is, at the normal price the M1070 sells for ($300ish), can the LCD2c be justified for a casual listener at $800? In my opinion the M1070 gets you 80% of the LCD2c sound for less than half the price....but if you want the better experience under $1000, cost a non-factor, then the LCD2c is your answer.
