Good night vision camera, poor night vision monocular
Let me start out by saying this is excellent in it's intended role. It takes great photos in low light conditions. That being said, I purchased this to use as a night vision monocular for airsoft, and it's mediocre in that role. It provides excellent vision in an area you can already see pretty well with the naked eye, but it restricts your field of view majorly, to the point where the tradeoff is questionable at best. In extremely low light environments, I've found it isn't worth using at all. This all changes if you add an IR illuminator to your gun, or helmet mount it, but on it's own it's really not a viable night vision monocular.

First off, the negative--the SiOnyx Aurora Sport does not come with an instruction manual or any type of quick start guide. I open the box. See the camera. See the battery. And I have no clue how to insert it. I'm also wondering at this point, "maybe this is an open box item that someone returned? everybody include a quick start guide". But, no. If you go to their website (link wasn't allowed by Amazon), you'll find their user guide online along with the note that the Sport doesn't include guide, neck strap, or microfiber bag. I question the wisdom of that and almost deducted a star.

But once I got the battery in the camera, charged it, and became familiar with the buttons and wheels, I began to warm up to the camera. I didn't buy it to take video. I bought it as a cheap monocular so that I can keep an eye on my property at night. I'm very rural by the way. No street lights or other light pollution. With just a sliver of the moon, it is dark enough that I can't see anything with the naked eye. Just a mix of dark shadows. But with the Aurora Sport, it gives me great a detailed view. I can comfortably walk around in the dark on my property. I can see deer grazing in my field about 150 yards away. They appear as very dark objects, almost black, and stand out against the surroundings which are much brighter and more colorful. You can clearly see when they lower their heads to graze and when they lift it to look around. The zoom is not very good though and I find it better to stay zoomed out.

Inside my house, it's pitch black. The Sport doesn't have an illuminator and you can't see squat. Depending on your use, you may not want an illuminator anyway. Or at the very least, you want control over it and the spectrum. I bought a $18 Fandyfire infrared flashlight to go with the Sport and it works extremely well. The Fandyfire is completely invisible to the naked eye. No red light giveaway. With the Sport and Fandyfire, I can pretty much read large print books in the dark. Close-up, everything is in fine detail.

Overall, this is a very good night vision camera (monocular), especially for the price. It's not military grade. It's probably not something you would use against other people that have true night vision. But if you're just wanting to check on things at night, and see a few hundred feet in the dark, then I absolutely recommend this.

Ok, here's the deal. You will not get a user manual with the camera. You will NEED to hunt on the website to find the manual.

If you're planning on using it as a marine night vision camera, you will need to read the manual to understand there is an auto shut-off that needs to be turned off. This is not obvious, so you think the camera has frozen.

And, if you do not have 20/20 vision, you cannot set up the camera. The entire set up is not via the app, but looking through the monocal. I can't see it with my readers, without my contacts, etc.

Do not expect assistance from customer service. The guy Bob does not read support requests, he only sends you information on setting up the wifi. That's it...really, every reply from Bob will be about setting up the camera.

Awesome idea, awesome night vision, but poor instructions and impossible set up.

I wrote a review, but am not sure if it went through, so I'll try again. first of all, I will say it does exactly as advertised. I watched a lot of youtube reviews, so pretty much knew what to expect. But it comes with no instructions at all. For basic use, you just turn it on and go for it, but there are many features that I had to google "manual for sionyx aurora sport, then I found about a 95 page set of instructions, which helped greatly! My two suggestions would be a built in IR light, and for the time lapse it could take more than 60 images per hour. (that is one a minute, I'd like to see one every couple of seconds or so). It doesn't work well under just star light, but with somewhat of a moon, it works OK, and living near a city, the ambient light is plenty enough to gain full advantage of it's capabilities. Kinda of a grainy picture, but that is to be expected. An IR flashlight works very well with it. I'm impressed, even after looking at all the youtube videos, I was still impressed once I was able to try it for myself. I use it just as a night vision scope, to see what is around in the dark.

Incredible NV camera for the $. Broad IR spectrum viewing. IR lights 850nm to 970nm look like bright flashlights. IR lasers within the same spectrum obviously the same. As a handheld viewer for security, hunting or boating, the sionyx truly performs. Everyone that has tried mine was blown away by the clarity. Turn on an IR light source and WOW is their expression. Will purchase another for helmet use.

I received the product to find the viewfinder is TINY. Nowhere near what the ads seem to show. The product feels and looks like an extremely high quality item but it excels at nothing. Its not night vision, it supposedly enhances the view when there is some type of lighting available but to be honest I did not see much difference. You can get a true night vision scope for 1/4 of what this unit costs. It really is of no use for daytime either, a monocular or binocular would serve you better. I really don't see the purpose of this item at all. Sent it back.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good, reasonably priced night vision camera
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 4, 2021
The SiOnyx Aurora is a very compact, lightweight piece of kit.
It can take pictures and record in colour which is a USP for this night vision camera.
I bought this specifically for stargazing and UFO capture.
Here is a breakdown of the performance:

Zoom - is okay but is grainy on the maximum zoom
Lighting feature - you can make it lighter or darker in view which is handy
Ease of use - pretty easy to setup and use. The recording capability is like a mini camcorder, really good
Capture - is okay, you can playback any photos or recordings straight away
Night vision - is pretty reasonable for the price, I was able to see a lot more stars than the naked eye could, it will not perform to the level of a gen 2+ night vision goggles at 2.5k, but reasonable nonetheless
Importing data - you have to download the app and then connect the camera to your device (mobile, tablet) in order to download the photos or videos. The app is a bit clunky and slow

Overall a reasonable night vision camera for the price that can capture in colour.
The night vision capture during darkness is like your in illuminated conditions so pretty good.
