The Four Cornerstones of Victorinox
The various tools of a Swiss Army Knife are manufactured from high-quality steel with precisely tuned features that are essential for the particular application. The steel is tempered, annealed and polished to achieve the necessary hardness and provide optimum resistance to corrosion. Every knife embodies our four cornerstones: quality, functionality, innovation and iconic design.
Functionality
The Swiss Army Knife is the ultimate multi-tool. Whether you need a magnifying glass to read fine print or a metal saw to cut through iron, the Swiss Army knife has your back. In addition to a blade, these gadgets include various implements such as screwdrivers, bottle openers, and scissors.
Innovation is our Tradition
Innovation is our tradition and has been ever since we patented the first Swiss Army Knife in 1897. Here in the Swiss Knife Valley, we take lumps of molten steel and blend with generations of experience to forge knives which are loved all over the world. As we continue to find new ways to improve our knives we also strive to apply better solutions that meet new requirements and our customers unarticulated needs.
Iconic Design
In 1891 Karl Elsener, the owner of Victorinox, was under contract by the Swiss Army to produce a folding pocket knife to be suitable for use by soldiers for opening canned food and disassembling the Swiss service rifle. Elsener invented a special spring mechanism allowing him to attach the tools on both sides of the handle, using the same spring to hold the tools in place. This innovative design meant Elsener could put twice as many features on the knife, which included a blade, a second smaller cutting blade, reamer, can-opener, screwdriver, corkscrew, and wood fiber grips. The Swiss Army Knife is the most recognizable icon of utility and smart design, and the knives are still made exclusively in only two factories in Switzerland.

History and Heritage
In 1884, Master Cutler Karl Elsener opened a cutlery shop in Ibach, Switzerland. There, he and the cutlers’ union he formed produced the finest steel cutlery, finished with the now-famous proprietary edge preferred globally by professional and home cooks. In 1891, Karl supplied the Swiss Army with its standard issue Soldier’s Knife and in 1897 with the Officer’s Knife. In 1921, after the death of his mother, Victoria, and with the advent of stainless steel, then known as “inoxydable"" and used in the production of his cutlery, Karl changed the name of the company to Victorinox. It is from those humble beginnings that a worldwide icon was born.
Today, Victorinox is still owned and operated by the Elsener family, and both the company and family still resides in the small village of Ibach, Switzerland.
Care Tips for Swiss Army Knives

Sharpening
To re-sharpen your knife, use a whetstone at an angle of 15°– 20°. This will result in a cutting angle of 30°– 40°. If sharpening on a grinding wheel, always cool with plenty of water to avoid excessive temperatures and the resulting damages that may occur.
Cleaning
After you’ve used your Swiss Army Knife for all of its various applications, such as cutting open numerous boxes, you may notice that the blades begin to stick together. Opening and closing the blades in warm water several times will allow the tools to easily move again. Once they have dried, it is recommended, to apply a small drop of oil between the blade or tool shank and the spring. To optimally maintain the locking mechanism, periodically apply a drop of our recommended Swiss Army Knife Oil. Never put Swiss Army Knives in the dishwasher."

I find I use it to open packages and pop bottle caps more than anything else, and it does both beautifully. Like others, I spare the smaller blade and keep it reserve in case I really need a very sharp one. But the main blade sharpens very nicely and very sharp. Like all knives, a little isopropyl alcohol on a rag takes adhesive et al right off of the blade. I've used every tool on it, including toothpick and especially tweezers, though the can opener and awl only to confirm that they are serviceable (the can opener is clearly a last resort for me) and my one use of the corkscrew confirmed that I have no future as a waiter at a nice restaurant. But if I practiced with it a few times I could probably impress on a picnic date.
As for the wood, that's the touch of class and MUCH nicer than the ones with plastic IMHO. It looks anything but out of place on my dresser beside my leather-swaddled smartphone, Seiko and my keys and that's a nice thing to behold just before heading out to work in the morning or turning in at night. It's the little things. Knicks and scratches from my keys just add character and are much less obvious against the wood grain than with the plastic ones. And when I pull it out of my pocket I look like a well-prepared gentleman. Or so I like to think.
But...If I were going camping, this wouldn't be my only knife. It's obviously not a full tang knife, doesn't even lock into place, and if I were to take a Swiss Army knife, it would at least be a model with a saw.
This is, for me, the very best compromise in an EDC pocket knife. Classy, reliable, easily pocketable (except on the rare occassions I wear skinny jeans) and feature rich. With a similarly rich heritage. The last few months I've spent carrying this have shown me that I'm done shopping.
Then I was hit by a car and lost my business. That Swiss Army knife is retired in the camera bag that houses my favorite three Nikons.
I bought myself a knew Swiss Army knife because I have nerve damage in my hands-- they're getting better (!), but I keep cutting my hands and fingers trying to hold scissors - in the open position (not a good idea!) - to open little packages, etc.
I knew this Swiss Army knife would be much safer than using scissors or even a dull kitchen knife.
I love that you get a large and small knife, PLUS, this little knife does so many things I wasn't aware of until my assistant pointed out that there the large screw driver is designed to also be a can opener. We used it on set once to show a celeb that this Swiss Army Knife could indeed open a can-- he opened a can of coffee. This would obviously be a handy Swiss Army Knife to have while camping.
This lovely see-through-blue Swiss Army knife came in a box with instructions: the one I bought from Patagonia (extremely reputable store by Union Sq., NYC) did not come with a box nor instructions.
The instructions explain *all* the things this is built to do. I'm grateful my assistant taught me all the uses.
Most of the items on this knife are self explanatory. I utilized the wire cutters, the can opener; I'm not entirely sure what the sharp little, very thick, almost crescent shape knife is meant for, but I used it to un-jam my bosses' and my own Hasselblad cameras. I also used the screw drivers often.
If you work in a field where you need a knife and other tools that you can carry in your pocket or hang on a carabiner on your messenger or work bag, this is THE Swiss Army knife for you.
This little knife saved so many photo shoots. Being a First Assistant and a photographer with A list celebrities, respectively, is a lot of pressure (especially when we used film).
I would not leave my house without my Swiss Army knife.
Turns out my assistant, who was Annie Leibovitz's First Assistant for two years several years earlier, carried the same Swiss Army knife all over the world with Annie.
Looking for quality and durability?
Look no farther.
It's much safer using a sharp knife than a dull one.
These are sharp, and when I was using it daily, I carried a small pumice stone to keep all of the blades sharpened.
I never needed to oil this model.
I can't believe these are still sold at such a reasonable price.
I feel much safer opening my packages and small delivery boxes with this blade that locks in place, than I did when I used scissors.
The blue is also such a beautiful translucent color.
Highly recommended!
I carried that for years and used it for everything: I snapped the tip off trying to pry a quarter out of cracks in the floorboards in high school, but reground it and soldiered on; I chipped one of the scales dropping it on pavement at one point, but continued to carry it. I figured out the reamer was sufficient to start most golf carts without a key, but plead the 5th as to what I did with that knowledge :) Finally, TSA got that knife back in the early 2000s when I was rushing to catch a flight and had forgotten to take it out of my pocket. I replaced it with various Victorinox Huntsman models (TSA got a few of those too; I'm sort of a mess when I travel) which felt like an upgrade due to the scissors, saw, toothpick and tweezers, if a bit bulkier.
Now, nearly 20 years later, I find myself drawn to the Spartan again. It is a lightweight, unobtrusive tool that slips into my watch pocket and is always there to fiddle with a screw or uncork a bottle of wine. It hits a sweet spot of size and functionality. Like all my Swiss Army knives, it is beautifully made and cheap enough you only cry a little if you lose it. I bought my young sons Spartan models (in their respective favorite colors) as their Cub Scout knives. I know from experience that they will never outgrow them (though their tastes may change). This is an enduring model for a reason!
