Austen's most popular novel, the unforgettable story of Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy

Few have failed to be charmed by the witty and independent spirit of Elizabeth Bennet in Austen’s beloved classic
Pride and Prejudice. When Elizabeth Bennet first meets eligible bachelor Fitzwilliam Darcy, she thinks him arrogant and conceited; he is indifferent to her good looks and lively mind. When she later discovers that Darcy has involved himself in the troubled relationship between his friend Bingley and her beloved sister Jane, she is determined to dislike him more than ever. In the sparkling comedy of manners that follows, Jane Austen shows us the folly of judging by first impressions and superbly evokes the friendships, gossip and snobberies of provincial middle-class life. This Penguin Classics edition, based on Austen's first edition, contains the original Penguin Classics introduction by Tony Tanner and an updated introduction and notes by Viven Jones.

For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators.

Review

“The wit of Jane Austen has for partner the perfection of her taste.” —Virginia Woolf

“Nobody has ever been slyer with characters than Austen.”
—Marlon James, “My 10 Favorite Books,” in T: The New York Times Style Magazine

About the Author

Jane Austen was born on December 16, 1775 at Steventon near Basingstoke, the seventh child of the rector of the parish. She lived with her family at Steventon until they moved to Bath when her father retired in 1801. After his death in 1805, she moved around with her mother; in 1809, they settled in Chawton, near Alton, Hampshire. Here she remained, except for a few visits to London, until in May 1817 she moved to Winchester to be near her doctor. There she died on July 18, 1817. As a girl Jane Austen wrote stories, including burlesques of popular romances. Her works were only published after much revision, four novels being published in her lifetime. These are Sense and Sensibility (1811), Pride and Prejudice (1813), Mansfield Park (1814) and Emma(1816). Two other novels, Northanger Abbey and Persuasion, were published posthumously in 1818 with a biographical notice by her brother, Henry Austen, the first formal announcement of her authorship. Persuasion was written in a race against failing health in 1815-16. She also left two earlier compositions, a short epistolary novel, Lady Susan, and an unfinished novel, The Watsons. At the time of her death, she was working on a new novel, Sanditon, a fragmentary draft of which survives.

Vivien Jones is a senior lecturer in English at the University of Leeds.

Tony Tanner was a Fellow of King’s College, Cambridge and a professor of English and American literature at the University of Cambridge. He died in December 1998.

I recently delved into Jane Austen's "Pride and Prejudice," and I must say it exceeded my expectations. The novel masterfully weaves a tale of love, societal expectations, and personal growth in the Regency era. Austen's wit and keen observations on human nature are evident throughout the narrative, making the characters come alive with their flaws and virtues. Elizabeth Bennet, with her intelligence and independence, is a protagonist ahead of her time, and Mr. Darcy's journey from pride to humility adds depth to the storyline. The social commentary on class, marriage, and manners remains relevant, making this novel a timeless exploration of the human condition. The elegant prose and engaging dialogue contribute to an immersive reading experience. For anyone seeking a captivating story with rich character development and societal insights, "Pride and Prejudice" is a must-read classic that continues to resonate with readers across generations.

It is beyond everything anyone has ever said really a most read, loved this love story that should be applied to all our relationships, we should all examine if we are being either proud or judging the other in our relationships! There is so much about the others we don’t know!

I bought it for my son, it's part of his curriculum. I'm glad my son's school requires classics instead of modern propaganda

Jane Austin was so ahead if her time. This story has it all. Sorry it took me so long to read it.

I love this book and chose the Penguin Publishing copy because it has notes at the end that explain some of the terms used to better understand the novel. Only gave 4 stars because it looks like I might have gotten a returned book (bent corner, scratches) but everything else was just perfect.

Although Nineteenth century England is unrecognizable to modern day Americans, the principles of individualism and happiness are timeless. Elizabeth Bennett is one of five daughters, in a society that revolves around status and familial reputation. She refuses to succumb to the pressures of marrying for anything other than love, like her best friend, who inevitably ends up miserable. Jane Austen is a master novelist. Her writing teaches history as good as any non-fiction work. The reader is transported to the landed gentry of 19th century England and experiences the thoughts, ambitions, and dreams of its inhabitants. This is an engrossing tale about individualism and happiness, a classic that lives up to its reputation.

5.0 out of 5 stars Go for this edition

Pride and Prejudice is, of course, available in many, many editions. But if you want one with annotations that help clarify the text and with annoying errors from the original text silently corrected (but only where the errors are obvious), this is the one to go for. The Oxford World's Classics edition is another option, but I find the annotations poorly organized and their markers within the text poorly indicated (just asterisks, no numbers). This is true of many OWC editions. Some titles, notably those by Charles Dickens, do not even have the annotations indicated within the text, so you don't know that a particular passage has an accompanying annotation. Between Penguin and OWC, always go for Penguin.
