Ball games, cars, and romances: the icons and battlefields of modern life.

In twenty-two linked stories, with infinite humour and pathos, Sherman Alexie explores some of the major issues of our time: the pull between the urban and the rural, the future and the past; the trials and tribulations of young adulthood; the comlex density of daily life. A modern mythmaker with a sharp eye for irony, Sherman Alexie's focus is an American Indian reservation, but his playground is the world.

After watching Smoke Signals, a fine film, I was driven to try the prose of this fine writer. Cousin I was not expecting the depth of feeling this author invokes with his tales of struggles with modern life in a foreign country...America. Could not put this book down once started and picked up a couple more of author's works right away. Experience a taste of what it may be like to be Native American in America

I don't have this book right now at my side, but I know it, and I know Sherman Alexie through his creative self. Every artist has his One Thing to Say. For Sherman Alexie, it is all about the father-son relationship. The father-son relationship is a love-hate relationship, and it becomes the duty of each grown man, especially if he comes from divorced parents, to make sure he goes to his father, and finds balance in this love-hate. You love your father because he is your Dad, and he loves you too. You hate your father for all his authority issues; how he treated your Mom, and all the bad things he did while you were growing up. Sherman Alexie is the Master of this Energy Tension of the relationship, and you can learn something very valuable by reading him, and internalizing some of the insanity we all feel at times. Many of us pretend to be socially connected, and in loving relationships with spouses and friends, yet, deep inside we sometimes feel isolated and totally alone, dysfunctional, and can only feel like a victim, or rage like a berzerk devil.
HOw do we feel our inner beauty? How do we feel loveable, and love our self? This is a dynamic path, and Sherman Alexie will put you on it, and you can come home, within, and find, finally, the Peace you seek, but it must start with seeing your life differently, and discovering how hard it was for your father just to be. Forgive and begin to feel Big--about life, and your role in it.

Having been raised near a Sioux reservation this book was a frank point of view from the Natives. Blatant, sometimes angry, poignant...........what a read from my naïve Caucasian perspective. Would recommend to my book club and other "enlightened, open-minded readers," who are willing to reflect on one's own prejudices.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sad and beautiful (and funny)

I love this melancholy, wild, surreal and naturalistic book. It's so many different things at once. It's like a meeting of Richard Brautigan, Kurt Vonnegut, Ralph Ellison, Walt Whitman and Charles Bukowski, all drunk as a skunk. There is a lot of love and booze, black humour, pain, death and discrimination. The most beautiful and essential story is the centre piece "Jesus Christ's half-brother is alive and well on the Spokane Indian Reservation". Pure poetry, wild and fascinating, leaves you breathless. One of the funniest pieces is "The approximate size of my favorite tumor".

5.0 out of 5 stars Native Indian literature

An excellent, easy read with insights into the world of the Native American. The film version (Smoke Signals) is also excellent.
