About the author
After graduating from Central Saint Martin’s College of Art and Design in London, a passion for pâtisserie lured Rachel Khoo to Paris, where she obtained a pastry diploma from Le Cordon Bleu cookery school.
Before long, she was travelling the world, working on culinary projects for clients large and small
and hosting cooking workshops in locations as far-flung as London, Paris, Milan, Sydney and Buenos Aires, while also developing her career as a food writer. This led to number-one bestseller The Little Paris Kitchen, which was published by Penguin in 2012 and translated into thirteen languages. The accompanying BBC2 TV cookery series turned Rachel into a household name, not just in the UK but also in the many other countries in which it aired, including Australia, Brazil, Hong Kong and the USA. Rachel has presented several subsequent cookery series for BBC Worldwide, and regularly writes recipes for the London Evening Standard, The Times and the Guardian, among other publications, as well as consulting for hotels, restaurants and blue-chip clients. Her popular website, Khoollect, is an online community of food and lifestyle inspiration, with a newly opened creative studio and workshop space based in London. In 2016 Rachel moved to Sweden, where she now lives with her Swedish husband and their baby.

TOO BAD AMAZON NOW SHIPS ITS BOOKS IN BUBBLEWRAP WHICH ALLOWS THE CORNERS AND SPLINE TO GET DAMAGED IN TRANSIT. LOOKS. LIME I WILL SOURCE MY BOOKS ELSEWHERE BECAUSE OF THIS.
So far, I've only made two recipes. I made a variation of the Västerbotten pie (sort of like a cheese quiche with onion and chanterelle mushrooms) with mature cheddar because the västerbotten (a Swedish cheese) was impossible to locate. It's a good recipe and wasn't difficult to make. The roasted butternut squash waffles sounded unusual but were actually pretty good. The only con I found was that the squash makes the waffles a bit squishy. They weren't crispy waffles but it was an interesting take on waffles. The recipe uses fresh butternut squash (that is roasted and then pureed) and doesn't give instructions on a canned equivalent. I used canned squash and the recipe was fine.
There are 4 sections in the book for each season. The layout is more user friendly because I think it's easier to cook based on what's in season. The book is pretty salad heavy. There are lots of "bun" recipes (cardamon buns, black pudding, apple and cheese, St. Lucia etc.) . Of course, there's a recipe or two for meatballs. Unlike her previous books, there are quite a lot of vegetarian and gluten free recipes. I am not the latter but do appreciate meat free dishes once in awhile. My only complaint so far is that I would have liked a source list. The book doesn't call for many ingredients that would be difficult to find (maybe except for Swedish caviar, västerbotten or knäckebröd, a type of cracker) but I wanted to have some recommendations of what to buy online since I don't live in Sweden.
I think it's too early to tell how high this cookbook will rank on my list of Rachel's books ("The Little Paris Kitchen" remains my favorite out of all 6 of her books.) but I do think it's a good intro to Swedish food for an English-speaking audience. The writing style feels very warm and personal with insights into her home life in Stockholm and new family. I think this book is less commercial than her last cookbook and it lacks her classic illustrations so if you're a fan like me you'll be missing those.
EDIT NOVEMBER 2018: I have upgrade my original review from 4 stars to 5 after trying a few more recipes. I made the plum tosca cake (like an upside down cake with toasted nuts on top) and coconut macaroons with melted dark chocolate that were both very easy. I don't think the recipes I've tried are complicated for new cooks and most of the ingredients are pretty easy to find.

I've been on a 'Scandinavian food' jag lately, thanks to the PBS series New Scandinavian Cooking, and am starting to get a sense of different kinds of cookbooks/authors. Khoo's book was not my first purchase in this genre, but is so lovely and the recipes tasty and relatively simple--for purists, maybe start with Claus Meyer or Simon Bajada. Khoo's Little Swedish Kitchen could easily be a great gateway to anyone who wants to delve into the stylish, spare, but still cozy niche of Scandinavian cookery from the perspective of a 'transplant' food lover who is clearly thriving in her new environment. A beautiful and useful addition to the cook's library.
