__________

Can someone in prison be more free than someone outside? Would we ever be good if we never felt shame? What makes a person worthy of forgiveness?

Andy West teaches philosophy in prisons. Every day he has conversations with people inside about their lives, discusses their ideas and feelings, and listens as they explore new ways to think about their situation.

When Andy goes behind bars, he also confronts his inherited trauma: his father, uncle and brother all spent time in prison. While Andy has built a different life for himself, he still fears that their fate will also be his. As he discusses pressing questions of truth, identity and hope with his students, he searches for his own form of freedom too.

Moving, sympathetic, wise and frequently funny,
The Life Inside is an elegantly written and unforgettable book. Through a blend of memoir, storytelling and gentle philosophical questioning, it offers a new insight into our stretched justice system, our failing prisons and the complex lives being lived inside.

Top review from the United States

Great thought provoking book - easy to read with the odd big philosophical word I have to look up - but that's a nice unexpected challenge which adds to a sense of a learning curve!

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant Philosophical Autoethnography
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 26, 2022
Andy West’s book is brilliant Philosophical Autoethnography. I should know - I’m currently editing a forthcoming Routledge text in the subject (*Writing Philosophical Autoethnography*). West fulfils the component parts that constitute autoethnographic writing: auto - self. West bares his soul throughout the book; ethno - or culture. He writes about prison life, about prisoners, about his philosophy teaching to prisoners, about his dad and brother - serial offenders and often prisoners, about his dread of inheriting the prisoner gene himself and how that haunts and drives him, and about wider carceral cultural forces; graphy, or analytic writing. Throughout his book, West skilfully weaves implicit and explicit analysis. This book is a real deeply moving page turner, written from heart and soul. I love it and strongly recommend it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Too short - was sorry to have come to the end of the book
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 15, 2023
What a brilliant read. I really was disappointed when I got to the last page last night. I've always found philosophy one of those "know-it-all" type subjects where everyone else claims to know more about things than I do. However, the prisoners' views on various philosophical concepts were absolutely spot on. I particularly liked the author's OCD with taking photos of his oven. I might start doing this myself (not really). I think this is one of the most enjoyable books (from many angles) that I have read for some years. If there were another, I'd definitely buy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Philosophical questions that go beyond the prison walls.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 19, 2022
I absolutely love the rawness of this writing. The storytelling is impeccable, and the nature of reality around the restrictions in the prison service hit you instantly.
It also makes you question how you look at criminal justice in general in the UK.
A must read for anyone who loves philosophy of course, but there are many life lessons to take on fundamental concepts that we all go through like shame, forgiveness and the concept of freedom.
