Is it possible to write a sidesplitting novel about the breakup of the perfect marriage? If the writer is Nora Ephron, the answer is a resounding yes. For in this inspired confection of adultery, revenge, group therapy, and pot roast, the creator of "Sleepless in Seattle" reminds us that comedy depends on anguish as surely as a proper gravy depends on flour and butter.

Seven months into her pregnancy, Rachel Samstat discovers that her husband, Mark, is in love with another woman. The fact that the other woman has "a neck as long as an arm and a nose as long as a thumb and you should see her legs" is no consolation. Food sometimes is, though, since Rachel writes cookbooks for a living. And in between trying to win Mark back and loudly wishing him dead, Ephron's irrepressible heroine offers some of her favorite recipes. "Heartburn" is a sinfully delicious novel, as soul-satisfying as mashed potatoes and as airy as a perfect soufflé.

Humorous, engaging, entertaining.
3 Stars
Humorous, engaging, entertaining.
I just finished listening to Heartburn; an oldie but a goodie (goodish may be more accurate). Read by Meryl Streep. A humorous look at the rise and fall (mostly the fall) of her marriage. Not a great book but it was engaging & entertaining. A good "listen" in small chunks on my short commute. 3.5 ⭐s

A humorous way to look at your unfaithful husband and still hang onto your own sanity. She’s a funny lady and adds some laughter to betrayal and adjusting to being on you own again. Highly recommend.

Funny, charming, silly, honest - this book (based not-so-loosely on Nora Ephron's own divorce in the wake of her husband's infidelity while she was pregnant with their second child) makes for an enjoyable read. Ephron has a clear, sassy and honest voice as Rachel Samstat, a woman who writes cookbooks and has the recipe for the perfect boiled egg. While 7 months pregnant with her second son, Rachel discovers that her husband, Mark, is having an affair and wants to leave her to be with his lover, Thelma Rice. Devastated, Rachel takes her son, Sam, to New York to come to terms with Mark's affair and decide on what to do next. She shares her story with us - including her therapy group being robbed, several recipes I am dying to try, and some funny and astute comments on love, marriage, fidelity and food. I found this book easy, enjoyable reading, and I can recommend it as excellent, non-chick-lit holiday reading.

I adore Nora Ephron, which means I have very high expectations of everything she writes. I miss her so much I read this older title and was a bit disappointed. It was funny in a bleak kind of way. And she managed some great zingers. But it never had me laughing/crying the way "I Feel Bad About My Neck" did. My gut feeling is that she was a little too freshly wounded to make betrayal and the breakup of a marriage funny. I'm guessing I'm the last of her fans to read this, so my opinion won't matter a bit. Everyone else read this years ago!

After having watched the movie again after seeing it many years ago( which was excellent also) I decided to read the book. It was just wonderful. Not really a book the younger generation would enjoy ( in my opinion only)

I loved the author’s wit, sarcasm, and sense of irony. It’s blend of New York and Jewish irony is perfectly crafted.

This story never gets old. We have all been in this kind of place. She just does a great job and telling the story.

Okay, first thing's first. I worship at the altar of Nora Ephron; I've read nearly all her essay collections, seen her movies, and may have (respectfully) stalked her on the Upper West Side many years ago. But I was not into this book. For those not familiar, it's a semi-fictionalized account of the disintegration of Ephron's marriage during her second pregnancy. The details are ugly and heartbreaking, and Nora/Rachel's pain is vividly palpable. Unfortunately, it seems to lack the romantic spark and bright joy that punctuates Ephron's later works. Obviously, there are few bright moments to be had in the end of a marriage, but this book wasn't enjoyable to read - achingly cathartic, maybe, but emotionally draining. Epron's trademark wit is still here, albeit in a much more venomous form. It wasn't for me, but it would probably be a great read for someone going through a breakup. Read with caution!

I should have read this book years ago.

I’ve seen her movies but I’ve never read her books. It’s not a traditional fiction novel, but I really connected with the way she wrote it.

She picks words that let you feel her pain. I felt it, and I wasn’t distracted in the least by the odd recipe thrown in. I’m going to make that key lime pie tomorrow.

Required reading for anyone who has ever gone through this situation. It reads like a jumble of thoughts but they connect because that’s exactly how you feel.

O livro é simples, mas divertido. Bom para quem gosta de uma leitura leve, mas não superficial. Também é interessante ver o retrato involuntário de outra época.
