First impression:
At first, these speakers sounded boomy and hollow, much like a boombox, only with better bass and treble extension. The midbass needed to be dialed back via a graphic equalizer to reduce the hollow sound.
As the days rolled by, the hollow and boomy sound reduced somewhat as the speakers broke in, but a combo of equalization and increasing the bass and treble on the speakers themselves helped improve sound quality.
Using an external DAC:
Around Christmas, I tried an external DAC and that really brought out the clarity of these speakers and almost completely eliminated any hollow midbass. Without any equalization, they provide a warm, but very clear sound with detailed mids and treble. I was hearing details that my old speakers failed to reproduce. One thing of note is that these speakers don't provide the same kind of bass that many 2.1 computer speaker systems provide despite these speakers having the same bass extension as many such 2.1 systems. But these provide accurate and excellent midbass, midrange, and treble.
Comparison with the Insignia Speakers:
With both pairs of speakers using internal sound, the Insignia speakers provided a natural sound that isn't hollow at all, and that's with bass and treble controls set to half. Subwoofer does not overpower the satellites and bass is fairly natural, although midbass is a bit lacking from 180Hz to 300Hz. Works great for both music and movies. As for the Creative speakers, they need at least 80 hours of break-in time, and even then, they can still sound hollow and detail isn't greatly improved over the Insignia speakers while using onboard audio.
With an external DAC, the Creative speakers are better in all aspects but bass. Clarity is so much better and so is midbass response.
Conclusion:
These speakers are excellent for the price, provided you use them with an external DAC. Using internal sound, they can sound hollow and clarity might not be much better than other options, which might put off some people. Overall, I highly recommend these if you don't plan to use these with onboard audio and don't mind the lack of deep bass.
Update (8/25/2021):
I put the speakers six inches away from the wall and that completely eliminated muddy bass and muddy male vocals. Bass in certain genres like jazz has improved to the point of being able to hear double basses/bass guitars much better without any need for EQ and leaving the bass and treble controls half-way. These speakers really do pump out amazing bass given the size of the woofers. They are still no replacement for a larger woofer or a subwoofer, though. While that means less space for me on my desk, the tradeoff is better sound quality. I'm enjoying these speakers much better as a result.
Please make sure these speakers are at least six inches away from the wall to avoid muddy bass. And definitely use an external DAC if you want the best possible sound quality as these speakers have much better detail reproduction than what you typically find in this price range. If you don't have enough room for bookshelf speakers, these are a good option.
Wireless may not always be the best choice, especially if located in an area like a work environment that may be cluttered with signals that can interfere with Bluetooth speakers. That’s when wired speakers may ultimately provide the only reliable and uninterrupted stream of music that makes it enjoyable for listening. Provided you know that the music source is solid and doesn’t fluctuate in volume, then if the Bluetooth connection lags and the speakers behave erratically, fade in and out and even cut out completely, the defiant fix that puts all the disappointment to rest is to use wired speakers instead. Since many wireless speakers throw out a constant signal, they can still be susceptible to interference, so it is the non-Bluetooth, wired speakers that will provide the ultimate fix if ever stuck in such an undesirable environment. Fortunately there is a solution. There are some very good low cost extension speakers readily available that will raise some eyebrows in regard to the quality of sound they can emit.
Anyone who has been computing for a lengthy time is likely familiar with the SoundBlaster name from Creative Labs, which became a standard in sound cards and provides several models of extension speakers that take up a minimum of space and are specifically designed to easily connect to a computer. Creative speakers receive good reviews and are noted for being louder than the other brands, and you may just find that the least expensive set is entirely adequate for your needs.
The Creative Inspire T10 has a bass and volume control and throws out a hefty 10W of sound. Next up the line is the T12 which almost doubles the output wattage to 18W. Further up from there, the Inspire speakers include a large subwoofer, but then the simplicity and portability all gets lost when necessary to pack them away on a daily basis.
There is another line of Creative 2-speaker sets called the GigaWorks Series 2. They resemble the low-cost T10 but also include a treble control along with the bass and volume controls. T12, T15, and T30 sets have Bluetooth, whereas T20 and the top of the line T40 speakers are wired only.
Listening to good music while working makes the work day more enjoyable, so I chose to test the 2-speaker T Series Creative sets in my search for improved music acoustics throughout my large work area. The volume will need to compete with some machinery and ventilation noise throughout the building, and I also wanted some ease in portability because the speakers will need to be packed away again before quitting time. So after some practical comparison testing using these T20 speakers and a set of T10 speakers, I found that both sets were adequately loud when set above 75% of full volume. Notably, volume increases at a faster rate the closer to max you turn the volume dial. Streaming music from the Internet from my smartphone, there was never a need to readjust the volume or relocate the speakers for better coverage, and the differences were obviously in favor of the T20 speaker set, well worth the extra price for the superior sound quality. The almost tripled output wattage (28W vs 10W) truly boosts the sound level and is then further complimented with an ability to better clarify the sound using separate bass and treble controls.
So in conclusion, even though some home speakers might throw out enough volume to wake the neighbors, cranking them up in a large work area might have you wondering where all the sound disappeared to. That’s when these Creative speakers will shine because the sound these speakers shake out is very full and pleasing whether connected to a laptop, mp3 player, or even to a cellphone. At the rather high price for comparable Bluetooth speakers, I wouldn’t even take a chance attempting to use them because of the inherent reliability built into these Creative speakers from the get-go. Happy listening!

Securely packaged, fast set up, worked out of box with no additional tinkering or driver updates.
Over all the build quality feels solid, the speakers are actually slight larger than what I had anticipated but that is not unwelcome. The tone adjustment nobs work like a charm and sound quality is great.
