Here’s the dilemma with kids these days and access to music and other media - everything is done via Bluetooth, which, for the most part, is controlled by our (adult) devices - which means I can’t be on my phone/device listening to something while my kids listen to something else. And my kids are still very young - they don’t have their own phones, nor, I hope, will they have them for quite some time. Grabbing my device and getting music going for themselves? Ain’t gonna happen. Some might say, what about an Alexa? I dunno, something about my kids having access to an Alexa creeps me out. And it isn’t truly portable.
I honestly debated buying my six year old a CD player so she could have access to and control over her own (somewhat portable) collection of music. But then I started researching the different storytelling devices, like Toniebox, Storypod, and of course, Yoto. Ultimately I decided upon the Yoto because of the radio function, the podcasts/free content, and the price of the cards compared to the price of individual Tonies/similar media.
To start, I bought the Yoto and a pack of five make your own cards. I had fun figuring out how the cards work, but honestly so far my favorite feature is the radio. I love that my kids can have access to kid-appropriate music any time, without my help (or not much anyway.) I don’t have to spend time building lengthy playlists or worrying about explicit lyrics. AND the music is very tolerable, with a genre spanning selection of kid-specific songs and all-ages songs. I was happily dancing along even when my kids weren’t around! Nary a Baby Shark or a CocoMelon to be heard.
Back to the cards - so far my only complaint, and this may not be a universal thing as I’ve only tried it with one podcast so far - even for a long podcast with many episodes, if you link the entire podcast to a card it always starts at the beginning when you insert the card, and you can only switch between episodes, not fast forward or rewind within the episode. This is impossible on a card and difficult within the Yoto app as well. If my kiddo wants to listen to a podcast I will probably load it onto a card one episode at a time, to make it less frustrating for both of us.
Despite that, I’m super excited by the potential of the cards. My daughter is constantly singing and making up her own songs. I’m sure she will love recording herself, recording messages for her sister, etc. And I’m excited to record myself and other family members reading stories or singing songs. I love that the cards are reusable as many times as you want!
The other cards with dedicated media are kind of pricey, in my opinion, but I’m probably going to join the Yoto club…if you get an annual membership the cost per card is less than $5! Pretty sweet.
So I’ve only had this thing a day and my kids haven’t even played with it yet…I’ll definitely return to this review and give an update on how they like it and how practical we find it to be!

My kids love the YOTO, they are 3, 5, and 7. This has replaced a lot of our screen time. It’s great to pull out some sort of building toy (magna-tiles, blocks, LEGO) and listen to a story.
