Easy to set up with a helpful LED indicator light and the ball bearings in the handle turn smoothly
Review date: April 30, 2022In short, the jump rope has an easy-to-view LED built into one of the handles that shows power and connection status to the SmartRope app by Tangram Factory Inc (Ignore the manual/packaging which say to download the deprecated SmartGym app), pairing with iOS inside that app is easy, and the ball bearings turn smoothly during use. The rope length can be permanently shortened. I highly recommend this jump rope, but keep reading for the extremely detailed review.Out of the box, the jump rope will need to be charged. The box includes a micro-usb to USB-A cable so you'll need a wall adapter. One of the handles contains the rechargeable battery, rotation sensor (rotating the other handle will not increase the jump count in the app), and LED indicator light. When charging, the LED indicator changes color from flashing red (low battery) to solid green (or was it blue? The manual doesn't say but you'll know when it's fully charged because it's not going to be flashing red). Turning the SmartRope on (LED shines blue) or off (LED stops shining blue) is a simple one-second press of the button on the bottom of the LED indicator handle. The rope is permanently attached to the LED indicator light handle. The other handle allows you to push the rope through the top of the handle and pull through the bottom of the handle. There is a cylidrical adjustment piece that holds the end of the rope so it doesn't fly out of the handle and the package includes a mini crosshead screwdriver to loosen the screw in the adjustment piece. Once you determine the length of rope that works for you, you insert the rope in the adjustment piece, tighten the screw to secure the rope inside the adjustment piece, then you cut any excess length of rope so that when the rope is pulled, the adjustment piece nests inside the handle preventing the rope from dislodging during use. Test the shortened rope before you permanently cut it shorter, and you will need to cut the excess rope to be able to put the rubber cap back on. (See photos for a page from the manual which should help visualize what I tried to explain in writing). I have also attached a scanned page from the SmartRope Rookie™ manual showing the length of rope for beginners, intermediate, advanced, and expert jump ropersIgnore the SmartGym iOS app mentioned in the manual/packaging because once you open that app, it immediately recommends that you download the newer updated SmartRope app by Tangram Factory Inc. I already had a previous SmartRope Rookie™ that was paired to the app, but pairing this new rope was very easy once I turned it on (Jump rope icon in the top right corner > Name of previously connected jump rope [Third button in the menu] > "Connection settings" at the bottom > Search for a new Smart Rope). At 6.5 oz/184 grams (the weight of both handles) the jump rope feels slightly heavier than my previous SmartRope Rookie™ (4.6 oz/130.41) but the ball bearings glide very smoothly during use. While I cannot provide a long-term review of the SmartRope Pure™ yet because I just got it recently, my previous SmartRope Rookie™ (made by the same company) was unboxed June 2, 2020, I used it intermittently in both June and July 2020, but I actually started using it every single day without skipping a single day from August 1, 2020 until a few days ago when it would intermittently lose connectivity despite putting a new battery in it. I have full faith that this SmartRope Pure™ will outlive my previous jump rope, especially because it has a built-in rechargeable battery. I know rechargeable batteries have a finite number of charge cycles, but even if this smart rope lasts 3 years (I hope it lasts 5 or more!) of literal daily use, I think $60 every 3 years on equipment that has improved my life is well worth the money.

3.0 out of 5 stars Love the idea, but poor quality rope
Reviewed in the United States on March 20, 2021
I jump a lot with the Smart Rope and I love being able to track reps. The app and technology are great. However, the rope itself is just not strong enough. I ordered one and the rope broke in about a month's time. I got a replacement through Amazon and the second rope broke in a month. I jump an average of 8000-9000 times a day and am jumping on a workout mat in my carpeted living room. If it can't handle soft surfaces like these, what is the point?

That being said, I am still going to keep replacing these because I have so much data that I love to work on (around 1.5 million jumps). Tangram Factory just needs to make the rope stronger and it'll be perfect.
