Rise Up Women!: The Remarkable Lives of the Suffragettes Hardcover – April 17, 2018

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 83 ratings

Almost one hundred years ago, British women led a hard-fought campaign to gain the right to vote--and this is their story.

Britain's women's suffrage campaign began in the nineteenth century, but the twentieth century ushered in a more militant campaign. On June 30, 1908, two schoolteachers broke windows at 10 Downing Street to protest being turned away from Parliament, and when Parliament dissolved without passing the Conciliation Bill, the Women's Social and Political Union (W.S.P.U.) led the Black Friday riot on November 18, 1910. Two years later, Ellen Pitfield set fire to a waste basket at the General Post Office and was sentenced to six months for arson. By 1913, suffragettes were winning public sympathy by citing harrowing stories of imprisoned women on hunger strikes being drugged with bromide and force fed.

During the First World War women had done many of the jobs previously done by men, and their vital work was rewarded politically by the Representation of the People Act, giving the vote to all women twenty-one years or older. It was passed in the House of Lords on June 19, 1917, and became law on February 6, 1918. Perhaps the ultimate victory was a law passed on November 21, 1918, that allowed women to stand as Members of Parliament in the next general election.

What a brick of sheer joy - so full of intricately researched and well presented information, all wrapped up in a fascinating and well-told story narrative. If you want to know why you should be so proud to have the right to vote, here's why.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE PANKHURSTS WOULD BE PROUD (probably)!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 7, 2020
A very detailed and absorbing history of the campaign for female suffrage in this country, and one which manages to avoid being polemical, letting the reader make up their own minds. For anyone with an interest in the subject, it's worth knowing this book allows every aspect of the campaign(s) attention and consideration. This work is like one of those deeply meaningful hubs of information from which further study could stem in any particular direction.
Such intelligent, focused and determined women (and men), imbued with a cause this just, deserve a book this well written and this passionate about its subject. And in essence, the wider movement for female emancipation was already underway by the time the Pankhursts and their many collaborators picked up the patriarchal gauntlet and began the task of seriously pulling it apart, but there is no denying their genius for propaganda and their sheer tenacity under very difficult circumstances.
Kinda makes me feel even more disappointed in my own gender than I already was, but I'm guessing that's a good thing!

4.0 out of 5 stars If this makes you stop and think I highly recommend "Hearts and Minds" by Jane Robinson which

Can't fault how this was delivered but I really struggled with the content. This is Diane Atkinson's homage to the suffragette movement. It's questionable how much we should celebrate what were often essentially anti-social, illegal acts of vandalism - the argument being that without such provocation the thorny issue of women's suffrage would never have had sufficient political exposure. However, it flew in the face of the suffragist's quietly pragmatic approach of proving themselves so capable that all opposition would crumble. Which, ironically, is exactly what the first world war achieved. That said, I would never want to diminish the incredible will-power and the awful price paid in terms of physical health by all the women who subjected themselves to force-feeding and the cruelty of the cat-and-mouse law. If this makes you stop and think I highly recommend "Hearts and Minds" by Jane Robinson which, personally, I prefer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Detailed account

Given as a gift to my wife who appreciates it very much. There is much detail in it (which she doesn't need and happily bypasses) and it also apparently gives an excellent overview of the times and stories of individuals during the fight.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rise Up Women! rises to expectations

A really good record of the times and details of the principal names in British women’s suffrage. There cant be much more to be said, therefore this could be the seminal biography. It’s also an easy read for the non-academic.
