Incredible.
5 Stars
Incredible.
What. A. Story. I did not want to put it down and I was even sad when it was over, I could have kept reading. Crystal shares a raw, honest, at times heartbreaking story of love, loss, grief, finding herself and her voice. It’s been a long time since I was so moved by a book. The parts outlining the pain of having her worth wrapped up in her appearance, resonated and shook me to core. I finished this book with tears in my eyes and a new perspective on self worth, self love, and overcoming it all. Aside from that, she illustrated the complexity of mansion life and living with Hugh Hefner. There’s a story Crystal tells about the lovebirds kept at the mansion, and if it isn’t a metaphor for life there, the women, how disposable and replaceable to Hef they were- I don’t know what is. My heart broke for Crystal many times throughout this book, but seeing the woman she has become, her self awareness, her honesty, her empathy and vulnerability; you can’t help but root for her, her healing journey and her future success.

I really liked this book. It was interesting and compelling to read, and I appreciated the background on her, to better understand how she came to be so vulnerable as to end up in the mansion.
I felt Crystal was very good at being honest and forthcoming about the details everyone wants to know about without being salacious or coy. It was straightforward in telling some of the sexual side of things, which did not diminish how disturbing and soul-sucking it must have been for her and so so many women over decades.
It's clear she has done the work in the past years to try to get a grip on just how destructive and disgusting Hef and his empire were. That he was a narcissist to boot is also obvious. The detail about the baby oil alone was awful. He just did not care about anyone but himself. Obviously the games he played could only work on very young and vulnerable women. He couldn't pull that stuff with even a slightly older woman who was confident and had a secure life.
I am glad she got out and has been able to learn from the experience. But I find it maddening that Hef escaped unscathed after doing so much damage. He got a long self-indulgent life and never had to face the facts about his disgusting and damaging behavior.

The book was very interesting. I feel so sorry for most of the girls that lived at the Playboy Mansion. I know a lot of people say that they knew what they were getting in to but I don't think that most of them did. When I was 18 to 25 or so I was so naive that I wouldn't know what was about to happen to me. A lot of the girls were from poor families and the gilz and glamor pulled them into that world of sex and drugs. I just hope they all get some help.

This book is an accounting of Crystal’s decade living a life as a key member of Hefner’s life - as his girlfriend, and ultimately his wife-and finally as his protector, to the end.
Her skills as a writer - and in many ways a historian - are top notch.
I grew up in So. California many years before her story takes place-those years where we watched “Playboy After Dark” on TV, and observed the growth of Hefner’s empire unfold.
Although I lived in the area, the Mansion was never anywhere I wanted to go. As a young woman growing up in the late 60’s we had already begun living a life of new freedoms-none of which went along with the Playboy lifestyle.
Hefner’s world seemed old-fashioned to us back then. But the Playboy Mansion, and the Playboy Club, with its scantily-clad bunnies at the door, was a major part of life in LA during the 70’s and 80’s.
I had very little knowledge of Mr. Hefner’s world after that time-and Ms. Hefner’s wife Crystal writes an amazingly thorough historical compilation of an even later period.
Her capable writing skills are obvious, and she is someone who readers can appreciate her ability to tell this story without succumbing to the usual practice that celebrity writers have of including “tell-all” lists of famous names and their overtly suggestive stories in their books.
For this reason and for the expertise she exhibits in relating her own stories to Mr. Hefner and his lifetime,
I very much enjoyed reading this book.

That rascal the playboy bunny is culturally relevant, if only to show how sexual mores have changed over the years. I knew even in my college years that an intelligent, yet beautiful woman would be a bad fit as a playboy bunny. That was years before Crystal married Hugh Hefner, so I wasn't surprised that she felt belittled and stultified as a resident in the Playboy Mansion. What I really stayed to read was why she STAYED and then *married* Hugh. I figured he gave her a "shut -up ring," anticipating what Holly had aimed at so he could pretend it was his idea to get married. In this way he could both belittle Holly and keep the other girls in line by choosing Crystal for marriage. By marrying at that age he expected to get devoted care from this final wifely relationship. I'm disappointed that she just signed the first prenup offered her and didn't negotiate, talk about Stockholm Syndrome!!! What I didn't expect was I would like and begin to respect Crystal Hefner neé Harris... She seems like someone I could become friends with if I'd met her in person. I don't know if it's just an excellent ghost writer or her own storytelling abilities I've been enjoying, but I found this book very interesting. Guess I'll want to see a sequel before I can decide, lol.

I admit I thought I might regret purchasing this book. I was afraid it might contain a lot of specifics about sex, which I just wasn’t interested in reading. I’m ashamed that I made that judgment. Instead Crystal wrote an intriguing and thought provoking book with very little specific description of sex. It was an insightful look at what led her to the mansion and kept her there. Her story is heartbreaking, fascinating, and inspiring. I’m very glad I read it, and very glad that she is finally free and healing.

I bought this book after hearing the author on a podcast, and I found it shockingly good. The author doesn't shy away from the salacious details, but they're all in the service of revealing the banality at the heart of the playboy ethos. It's a must read for any woman who survived the 90s.

I've seen every episode of The Girls Next Door. I've gone down the rabbit hole (pun intended) of reading about what life was like at the mansion, whether as a Bunny, a Playmate, or Hugh Hefner himself. I've watched documentaries, listened to podcasts, and read many an interview. I've heard stories of the Playboy world from so many different perspectives. But the one perspective that was always missing was this one.

The minute I heard that Crystal Hefner was writing a memoir, I knew I had to read it. For a year, I anxiously awaited its release. And it was definitely worth the wait.

I cannot tell you the last time I read a book within 24 hours (I think it was probably when I was 10 and read Charlie and the Chocolate Factory at summer camp) but I truly could not put this book down. It consumed my thoughts and I was deeply absorbed right from the first page.

ONLY GOOD THINGS gives us a look into the mysterious fantasyland of the Playboy mansion and what life was really like living within those gothic stone walls (hint: it's not all glitz and glamour). Crystal Hefner takes us on a behind the scenes tour of the movie nights, the star-studded parties (and what happens after the party is over), and the infamous scrapbook room. She shares the story of her childhood and teenage years, and how she went from being a guest at a Halloween party to becoming a girlfriend, a runaway bride, a wife, and finally... a widow. She also gives us a look at the man behind the curtain, Hugh Hefner. But most importantly, Crystal provides us with a tale of love, loss, grief, and incredible growth.

Crystal, thank you for sharing your story with us so beautifully 💖 It made me feel happy, sad, angry, and just about every other emotion on the spectrum. Thank you for saying not only the good things, but the bad things too. I can't wait to see what you do next ✨

Ruby
5.0 out of 5 stars Definitely a Book that Needs to be Read
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 23, 2024
I will admit that I had judged Crystal a while ago... I feel bad to say that as I usually am one who always tells people that we should never judge someone else as we never know what someone else is going through. This book proves that... rather strongly.

I had absolutely no idea that Crystal struggled as much as she actually did with her own sense of beauty. To so many, she would have looked like she was beautiful, and would surely have known it, yet the actual reality was far from it. The fact that the unattainable so-called beauty standards had the impact that it had on Crystal should surely serve as some wake-up call for others... Society needs to be fixed as it is causing so much damage and hurt for people.

As for the actual reality of the Playboy Mansion, I had picked up on bits and pieces of it here and there before, however this book describes everything in a way that I would suspect would not have entered most people's heads before. I used to watch a certain show associated with it many years ago but I didn't suspect even then what the actual truth would be. (This was long before Crystal was there.)

I feel that she was rather strong to put this book out there and that is not meant in a nasty way. It is due to the amount of vilyifying that tends to accompany some books that I wouldn't be surprised if Crystal ended up receiving. Simply because that is what some people seem to like doing. I had no idea that she actually does what she does now and that has given her even more respect in my eyes. For someone to try to show truth about something that is paraded as being "normal" they are always in for a rough time yet she has willingly gone for that. It seems that it all comes from a very good place ~ simply that she doesn't want other girls to end up feeling the way that she did about herself and that is always something to be applauded. Thank you.

Once I begun reading, I ended up sitting and finishing it in one go as I simply had to find out what happened next. The lovebird scenario was very telling indeed. Her feelings regarding Hef were very well written and read as being very genuine to me. It sounds as though she did genuinely care for him ~ more so than what some others did. The fact that she has not attempted to paint herself a certain way also serves to prove this impression to me. She tried to protect him when so many were taking advantage. The revelation about the stealing that had been going on actually shocked me and it takes a lot to shock me these days. I do wonder who it was and for how long it had been happening for. At least she didn't tell Hef. It seems as though she was protective towards him which was what he actually needed ~ someone who would actually look out for him and have his best intentions at heart instead of so many who simply wanted material things. At the same time, this was obviously to her own detriment... I wish Crystal all the best and I will be following her work from now on. I feel bad for having judged her previously as doing so is not nice to do particularly in a society when women are always pitted against one another. Thank you for doing what you are doing and for what you have done.

5.0 out of 5 stars An unexpected surprise for those who expected fluff
Reviewed in Germany on January 25, 2024
I did not expect to like this or find any harsh truths revealed, but I was wrong. Crystal Harris’ book is a very kind and gentle FU to all of us who asked why a 21 yr old would date a powerful 81yr old, instead of asking why an 81yr old predator would parade and manipulate a bunch of 20yr olds for decades of personal entertainment purposes without any public repercussions. Because we all acted as if that was weirdly acceptable.Holly Madison clearly told us Hefner was a controlling narcissist who traumatized many. Bridget M. apparently was too kind or delusional to ever fully acknowledge all of it. Kendra W. seemingly preferred to rewrite history instead of admitting how easily one can harm oneself and others by being both youthfully ignorant and traumatized. A whole micro cosmos at the Playboy mansion and a gawping audience supported an unhealthy environment for girls looking for a lucky break. Crystal Harris frank description of her own bad choices reminds us how society treats young women and rewards both awful behaviour and female submissiveness. We live in a world that pretends prostitution is not prostitution if it is glamorized, while blaming victims for their survival tactics or their misguided ambition and quest for validation. Until we teach our daughters their self worth and what is acceptable male behaviour today, until then we are enabling the disrespect that causes girls to think they have to play stupid games and accept stupid prizes.
