A cause for celebration, and a landmark work that gathers in one volume many of Africa's most cherished folktales.

In these beloved stories we meet a Kenyan lion named Simba, a snake with seven heads, and tricksters from Zulu folklore; we hear the voices of the scheming hyena, and we learn from a Khoi fable how animals acquired their tails and horns. Creation myths tell us how the land, its animals, and its people all came into existence under a punishing sun or against the backdrop of a spectacularly beautiful mountain landscape. Whether warning children about the dangers of disobedience or demonstrating that the underdog can, and often does, win, these stories, through their depiction of wise animals as well as evil monsters, are universal in their portrayal of humanity, beasts, and the mystical. Translated from their original languages―Karanga, Nguni, Xhosa, and many others―these folktales are a testament to the craft of storytelling and the power of myth.

"It is my wish that the voice of the storyteller will never die in Africa, that all the children in the world may experience the wonder of books."
Nelson Mandela

About the Author

Nelson Mandela (1918―2013) was a South African anti-apartheid revolutionary, politician, and philanthropist, who served as the first democratically-elected President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999. Nelson Mandela was born in Transkei, South Africa, on 18 July 1918. He joined the African National Congress in 1944 and was engaged in resistance against the ruling National Party’s apartheid policies after 1948 before being arrested in August 1962. In November 1962 he was sentenced to five years in prison and started serving his sentence at Robben Island Prison in 1963 before being returned to Pretoria, where he was to later stand in the Rivonia Trial. From 1964 to 1982, he was again incarcerated at Robben Island Prison and then later moved to Pollsmoor Prison, during which his reputation as a potent symbol of resistance to the anti-apartheid movement grew steadily.

Released from prison in 1990, Mandela won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993 and was inaugurated as the first democratically elected president of South Africa in 1994. He is the author of the international bestsellers Long Walk to Freedom and Conversations with Myself.

We've given the audio book and the book as gifts to a number of people, and they've raved about it. I haven't heard every one of the readings but the ones I've listened to are superbly done. Artists for a New South Africa (ANSA), which produced the three CD audio book, assembled a distinguished cast that included (among many others)Desmond Tutu, Morgan Freeman, Helen Mirren, Samuel Jackson, Alan Rickman, Charlize Theron and Don Cheadle -- and had music composed and played by one of South Africa's leading musicians and sung by South Africa's best-known singer. The tales are collected from all over Africa, and they will interest adults as well as children. It's a wonderful present for Christmas or Hannukah or for a child's birthday. And, Hachette, the producer is giving the proceeds to ANSA and Nelson Mandela's Children's Fund which will use the money mainly to help AIDS orphans.

This audiobook is just lovely. I bought this for my 8 year old son for Kwanzaa, and we are both captivated. It's usually our "traveling music." The soundtrack is brilliant, and the stories are just the right length for a listener of any age. My son and I are both very visual people, and we are both practicing more attentive and active listening. We don't get "lost" in these fables. The variety of narrators also keeps it hopping. It's fun to see if you recognize the voices as there are quite a few Hollywood A-listers narrating. My only recommendation is that you purchase the book as well as the CDs. The book would be a great supplement to those trying to improve reading skills.

A wonderful addition to our library. The kids loved it and I love exposing them to new cultures.

I bought this book for my little siblings, aged between 10 - 6 years old. Being proudly South Africa, when I saw Mandela's name and read some of the reviews I immediately went and placed my order. It sounded like a perfect story book. But when it arrived a few days ago and I opened the book I was blown away by just how GREAT this book it. It has many more stories than I thought (so real value for money!), awesome illustrations & even some songs for the kids to learn. And if you play guitar or piano there are even notes so you could play + sing the songs.

GREAT buy for adult & children readers. You won't regret this purchase...and for such a reasonable price. Very few such quality books left today! This one is a keep!

This is my family's favorite book. Packed full of excellent and interesting folk tales, it is the one I choose most often to read to classrooms, special groups or to my own children (3 and 7) at bedtime. We began with the companion CD of celebrity voices then wanted the entire collection. Countless classmate's parents have asked for the book's title after I read to the class. This book is a treasure and a very smart addition to any library. A few stories have death (an evil bird) or a fight (knocking a bully down) but it is all in context of excellent life lessons. I feel confident opening it to any page and reading to any child.

I have been reading these aloud at bedtime to my 8 year old twins and they both love them! Why? They are anything but predictable! I think they have come to expect happy endings or moral lessons, but these stories often have twists that surprise them. Not a lot of illustrations, but the ones they have are lovely and diverse. We have enjoyed looking at the map of Africa marked with flags of where the stories come from. Also have had the opportunity to talk about Nelsen Mandela and his story, which is new to them. Great all around book!

I was moved by the fund raising effort support for HIV AIDS orphans in South Africa, familiar and admiring of the story collection released some years ago, I was delighted to listen through the entire collection. The blend of music and voice, brilliantly realized by a host of talented talents "Artists for a New South Africa", brings these stories alive! Libraries (like mine) and individuals will appreciate each and every track in this 3 CD set that is up for Grammy nomination.

Una edición muy bonita. El vocabulario que utiliza no es muy sencillo para personas con dominio medio del inglés. De todas formas lo recomiendo ya que recopila cuentos de distintos países de África muy curiosos.

5.0 out of 5 stars great audio production
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 20, 2012
this is the 3 CD unabridged audio book, the audio production and interpretation skills are excellent - the audio is more perfect than the version of the 'conversations with myself' audio book.
my only criticism is in the volumes:
sometimes the volume of the reading voices are too low sometimes too high - you adjust it to one volume and then it's either too low or too high. the volume of some songs is too loud and again I found myself turning the volume down and then I had to put it up again to hear the continuation of the tale being told or the next story!
the third CD also contains all the songs featured in the previously read tales and I wish that it also contained the whole English translation of all the songs, some of the stories are really beautiful even though we cannot see a moral lesson in all of them.
I wish that even here in the UK people had or would learn from these tales in terms of courage, substance, kindness and foresight to go beyond the appearance - for example the story of the young man who eventually falls in love with the girl who had a spell cast on her and because of this she was dumb...
this is one of the best audio books I have ever read - highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Some of my favourites too.

I can easily understand why these were the great man's favourites. I can remember our Zulu house maid telling some of the stories to my children. As soon as she set up the ironing board they would sit on the floor in front of her and ask for stories!
