Hearts And Minds: The Untold Story of the Great Pilgrimage and How Women Won the Vote Hardcover – January 11, 2018

4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 45 ratings

FEATURED ON BBC RADIO 4 'START THE WEEK'.

Set against the colourful background of the entire campaign for women to win the vote, Hearts and Minds tells the remarkable and inspiring story of the suffragists' march on London.

1913: the last long summer before the war. The country is gripped by suffragette fever. These impassioned crusaders have their admirers; some agree with their aims if not their forceful methods, while others are aghast at the thought of giving any female a vote.

Meanwhile, hundreds of women are stepping out on to the streets of Britain. They are the suffragists: non-militant campaigners for the vote, on an astonishing six-week protest march they call the Great Pilgrimage. Rich and poor, young and old, they defy convention, risking jobs, family relationships and even their lives to persuade the country to listen to them.

This is a story of ordinary people effecting extraordinary change. By turns dangerous, exhausting and exhilarating, the Great Pilgrimage transformed the personal and political lives of women in Britain for ever. Jane Robinson has drawn from diaries, letters and unpublished accounts to tell the inside story of the march, against the colourful background of the entire suffrage campaign.

Fresh and original, full of vivid detail and moments of high drama, Hearts and Minds is both funny and incredibly moving, important and wonderfully entertaining.

"
Hearts and Minds by Jane Robinson is a brilliant, witty and moving account of women’s battle to win the vote. There were two key movements: the Suffragettes, prepared to suffer for their cause, including forced feeding and imprisonment, and the Suffragists, devoted to Constitutional action and unwilling to use violence. The book tells the story, still little unknown, of the successful crusade of the Suffragists who walked to London from all over England and from all sections of society. That story is the account of the ‘Great Pilgrimage’ of 1913, a key element in the finally successful of the cause of women’s suffrage." - Shirley Williams, the Rt Hon the Baroness Williams of Crosby -

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful

One of my favourite reads of the year for sure. I have read many books written about the Suffragette movement and this is one of the absolute best. Written with compassion, humour and sensitivity, Jane Robinson recounts the struggle for female emancipation. We not only hear about the most prominent and well known of the Suffragette and Suffragist movements but also about the lesser known but still as vital activists of all classes and social standings. Factual and theoretical but written in such a way that it brings the voices of our past alive with utter vibrancy. Just love this book and would encourage everyone to read it and to appreciate the rights we now have due to these women's sacrifices. Looking forward to reading Bluestockings by the author next.

4.0 out of 5 stars Well written
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 4, 2020
This book is well written by the author. Fascinating approach, evidenced based conclusions. It is very readable.

However the copy I bought (used, said to be in good condition) had been written in by a previous owner. Underlining, deleting by heavy use of a pen, frequent comments in margins obscuring whole words. I will donate to a charity when shops reopen. I won’t reselling.

This copy should not have been resold.

5.0 out of 5 stars It is brilliant, not just because Jane Robinson writes well
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 9, 2018
Before you read "Rise up Women" by Diane Atkinson, read this. It is brilliant, not just because Jane Robinson writes well, but because she unfolds the development of the suffragist (as opposed to suffragette) movement through describing the Great Pilgrimage. Personally this is the side of the suffrage story that resonates most with me; I don't think I would have been an activist in the suffragette way and it saddens me that the actions of the suffragists isn't better known - in fact, part of history that I had no idea of until I read this. Rather than charting the political life of a few, this explores the lives of so many women, all unique and yet 'ordinary' in their own everyday lives, who came together and marked history with their conviction, tireless involvement and incredible organisation.

5.0 out of 5 stars The story of just one part of women's struggle for recognition.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 20, 2020
A powerful reminder of the weight of determination shared by women from many backgrounds that was brought to bear in the face of political indifference and downright self-interest, with no single strand of that determination bringing decisive success. Rather, the force of women as a whole, created the social conviction that made that success inevitable. This is the story of just one strand of that determination.
