This book is often considered to be the best Lupin book. I'm pretty sure that's not true, I think people are mistaking ambition for quality (it's not really the same thing) and that the best Lupin book, the one where LeBlanc was really firing on all cylinders, was the marvelous THE HOLLOW NEEDLE. But 813 is certainly very ambitious and unusual, and anyone who's interested in this character really needs to read it.
The most interesting thing about 813 is that it's structured as a novel, not a collection of short stories that are vaguely linked together. More: it's the only Lupin book where the character, if not exactly criticized, is certainly more cleanly developed than he ever has before. We see all of Lupin's strengths here: his courage, his improvisation, his sense of humor. But we also see very clearly some weaknesses: his innate selfishness, for instance, or a (related) narcissism that fires off a lot of collateral damage.
There are two massive surprises in this story. The first, about halfway through, works wonderfully; the second is not nearly so surprising to today's audience -- you may well guess it on your own. That's a problem. I also think that Lupin works better in smaller doses -- over the long haul he tends to pall. (I guess I can only take so much smartassery.) HOLLOW NEEDLE works around that flaw in a very clever way; LeBlanc was, I think, trying to do something similar here but I don't think it's as effective. Finally a lot of the effect of 813 only works if you already know the series -- 813 is in some ways a comment on these earlier stories and books. The fact that it's hard to appreciate 813 in isolation also is a problem, I think.
So flawed, 813 persuades me that for the most part LeBlanc was at his best in smaller venues, where he could hit high points without having to vamp them up to such an extent. But it's very interesting, and Lupin's character evolves in unexpected ways through the telling of this story. I would recommend it, although this not the place to start.
The focus of 813 in completely different from Lupin versus Herlock Sholmes and The Hollow Needle. Those two stories are told from the perspective of Lupin’s adversaries. Beautrelet was in a sense the hero of the story even as he was completely dominated by Lupin. Here, Lupin is the focus of the story and his opponent is the mysterious adversary in the shadows. This is the first time Lupin seems to be at a disadvantage and I would say it improves the story significantly. We don’t learn the identity of Lupin’s foe until late in the book and it’s an interesting revelation. 813 is the closest to an actual crime mystery that Lupin has seen.
So this is an awesome book, right? Well, the big problem for me was that I became completely lost. There were numerous characters with dual identities including Lupin who had at least three. There were so many storylines that I was entirely baffled. I'm not even sure what Lupin was trying to steal. Something about a lost document and German royalty and taking over the world. The plot shifted gears so often I couldn’t follow and this has never happened to me with any other Lupin book. The book also felt a lot longer than previous books. Given my confusion I can’t give the book any higher than 3 stars. Maybe someday I’ll read it again and try to go through it a lot slower. Probably Not.
