Juventus: A History in Black and White Paperback – Import, January 1, 1600

4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 118 ratings

The story of Juventus FC, one of world football's truly great clubs and one of the oldest on the peninsula, is truly the story of Italian football. Known as La Vecchia Signora ("The Old Lady") she is a perfect blend of flair, artistry and skill, combined with a ruthless determination and will to win that constantly flirts with the less savoury elements of the game. For every Michel Platini or Alessandro Del Piero to win the hearts of fans of the beautiful game, there has been a Claudio Gentile or Paolo Montero waiting their moment to launch a well-timed elbow into an opponent. For every Gianni Agnelli to woo the crowds with his sartorial elegance and well chosen words, a Luciano Moggi lurks, playing the perfect villain and serving to heighten the levels of hate felt towards the club by rival supporters. It is all encapsulated by those starkly contrasting stripes which have become synonymous with the Turin giants. This is that story, a history in black and white.

One of the best readings. As a fan, the insight into the storied history of the club and the success after failure, puts everything into perspective. Awaiting a part two, on the continued achievement for Juve. Fino all Fine

Very grateful to have an English-language history of this storied club. The book was clearly a labor of love by the author and I learned a lot about the Old Lady’s history and cast of characters. A bit disappointed in whoever edited the book; it needed another pass from the copyeditor/proofreader, as there are numerous little mistakes and typos, although they don’t detract too much from the writing.

Simply the best history of the club available in English, by one of its most thoughtful observers.

As a long-time Fiorentina supporter, my feelings about Juve are anything but positive, but no serious follower of Calcio or world football can deny their importance to the game or to Italian society in general.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant retelling of Juve history.

Going back to the beginning, this historical tribute tonthe old lady is a must read for fans and scholars alike. Adam Digby is a well respected author and journalist, and his literary accumen and die hard love for the team are both on full display.

The only thing that would make this better is an updated revision of the past 10 years.

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing

I found this book very shoddy, more a collection of statistics picked up here and there than a history with a real feeling for the subject. The writing's very poor, full of grammatical and spelling mistakes. On top of that, the author has only a very vague knowledge of Italian, hence a series of howlers involving not only the names of people and places, but also facts. Two thirds of the book are dedicated to Juventus from the 70s onwards. I happen to live in Turin and was present at most of the games mentioned. The author gets many things wrong, too many for me to list here. I'm available as an editor, though, if ever the book were to be reprinted!

5.0 out of 5 stars Good to see a couple of pages on the late

Interesting and absorbing book on the chequered history of Juventus fc. with lots of snippets I never knew. Good to see a couple of pages on the late, great John Charles, the idol of my boyhood.Like other reviewers I was a bit disappointed that there are no photographs at all; but this does not detract from the book being a good read.

5.0 out of 5 stars from Alessandro (del Piero) to Zoff
Reviewed in Canada on October 27, 2016
This book is so far underpriced at $2 and change I feel sorry for the author. I'd pay ten times that for this. This IS the definitive history of one of the greatest soccer teams in the world--Juventus. It's so well researched and touches all the players you need to know (and not just the stars). I loved it mainly because it filled in the gaps in my knowledge of the team as after the Platini era I kind of lost touch with the ins and outs of the Turin side.

The whole Calcipoli season in Serie B arguably made for the best reading. Gave me greater appreciation for Buffon, Del Piero and Trezeguet.

I cannot wait to find out the next soccer topic Adam Digby tackles. I suggest if he wants to continue in the Italian team history vein that he gives us a AC Milan history (another team that also was punished in their past and sent down to Serie B only to return to greater glory as European champions).
