First DLC was reasonably priced at $7 which is really good (I have never bought one on COD for $15) I hope they keep the price so I can keep buying them.
Fast forward to 2014. Over the last year I built a new computer with some decent specs to support my photography business (Intel i7 3930, 32GB RAM, 670FTW, fluid cooling, etc.). When I saw Titanfall launch I figured it might be a fun game to test out the new system, and to try my hand at gaming for the first time in ages. I have to say, I was thoroughly disappointed.
Don't get me wrong, the gameplay, fluidity, graphics, styling, etc. of Titanfall are marvelous. Where it is hindered is the "multiplayer only" way in which it was designed. That's right, there is NO single-player campaign here... Titanfall is a teamed MULTIPLAYER ONLY game! I'll admit it, I'm a causal gamer, or what other people might refer to as a gamer "n00b". I play for fun in my spare time, I don't take hours to master controls, and I like blowing stuff up and tackling single-player campaign levels for the fun of it. Getting "pwnd" by hardcore gamers is not my idea of fun, and unfortunately, that's all Titanfall is. The pros run around killing everyone, while the casual crowd is getting destroyed left and right.
If you are a casual gamer like me, save your money and don't waste your time on Titanfall. You'll get killed 15 times before you can figure out how to swap weapons. Too bad too, because I wanted to really like this game, and explore the maps/world that EA created.
I'm clearly not the market EA had in mind.
Pros:
- Fast, frantic, furious first person combat.
- Core gameplay is enjoyable in spite of any issues I find.
- Respawn nailed movement in this game. The Pilots feel fast, agile, and lethal. The Titans feel mechanical, heavy, and dangerous.
- The maps are not particularly mind blowing, but they suit the game well and are a blast to traverse on foot or in a giant robot.
- They have the bare essential gametypes
- Giant robots with giant guns... also jet packs.
Cons:
- Poor implementation of a rather generic set of weapons. Mind you they all feel good in-game, but the speed and balance of the game makes some guns useless and some guns overpowered.
- There is very little incentive to ever play as a team in Titanfall. It happens, but it doesn't feel essential.
- The AI controlled enemies and friendlies are insignificant cannon fodder.
- The color pallet and visuals are uninspired and very last gen. grey/brown/grey/brown/glowy blue/grey/brown
- No destructible/interactive environments, besides running up the wall. All this awesome hardware and you can't even knock down a cardboard box.
- The Campaign is a complete joke. It is literally the multiplayer, but with mediocre cut scenes and comically contrived voice acting.
- I and everyone I know who plays has had some technical issues with Titanfall on PC. The occasional crash and signs of poor optimization are there. Certainly not the worst I've ever seen, consider it playable.
Respawn has two directions they can head in with Titanfall. Either focus on the MP and go for a lower price point OR hike up your knickers and do what few triple A studios can do, offer a robust MP and a stellar story experience for 1-4 players. I say they focus on MP and you get this game when it's $40 or less.
