I never knew 3DS games could be fully voiced, have massive open-world levels, and looks so great. I never thought the tech was there but this proves that wrong.
The story is fresh and original. Very cool idea even in the opening cutscenes.
Kingdom Hearts fans rejoice because the score composer Yoko Shimomura is the main composer of this game as well! Sometimes I can't get off the title screen because I just get sucked into the song.
Again, I haven't even gotten terribly far into the game yet but I've already preordered the sequel due out in December on the Wii U. That is a must-play.
Overall, 10/10 would recommend.
Con
Not happy that I can't get the Shulk amiibo which is the only amiibo that will work for the game. Why give you the amiibo option if you can't even find the amiibo for retail price. Nintendo should really manufacture and distribute more of the Shulk figures because I haven't even seen one in person.
My only issue is the price, although it IS worth it - just don't buy this as a gift for someone unless they ask for it, or unless you KNOW they have the right system and love open world action RPGs.
Fast forward a few years. With a sequel scheduled to release in the relatively near future, now is a great time to revisit this classic. Is it perfect? No. But if you are one of the people who missed it the last time, this is a great release.
GAMEPLAY
Xenoblade is best described as an offline MMORPG. The battles play out using distinctly MMO stylings. You lead your characters near enemies, command them to attack, and they will hack and slash away. You can add in certain special attacks at your choosing. It is a functional battle system if you figure out how to maximize your attacks and strategies. Some may find it boring because certain aspects are outside player control, which is a fair criticism. It simply is not for everyone, but for those willing to give it a chance, the combat is fun, deep, and complex enough without being overwhelming.
The rest of the game involves proceeding through story quests and doing side quests along the way. Lots of side quests. An almost overwhelming amount of them, to be honest. Most of them are background side quests, meaning you need not focus your attention on them. I found myself completing a number of side quests I didn't realize I had begun because I was not reading much of the text attendant to the side quest explanations.
The touch screen is not used at all (barring an update in the future). The map is somewhat functional, but small. I could not explain why someone did not think to at least make it that the player can tap the map to enlarge it, or tap a character to go to his or her stats/equip page of the menu instantly when outside of battle or a cutscene.
While the game features 3D visuals like any other 3DS game, they really do not add much or make the game look significantly better. Some games offer a lot of depth in the world when the 3D slider is on. This is not one of them.
This being the inaugural New 3DS exclusive, Nintendo has to include amiibo support since there is an existing amiibo for Xenoblade--Shulk, from the Super Smash Bros. amiibo series. The amiibo functionality in this title is solely and exclusively that scanning a Shulk amiibo nets the player a few coins to use as currency to buy things in the game, so it is minimalistic and hardly noticeable. This is a good thing because the Shulk amiibo costs more than the game does at this time due to extremely limited quantities of the figure on the market.
Xenoblade is a traditional JRPG/MMO hybrid. There are not many games like it and for those who get into it, it is a lot of fun to play.
GRAPHICS
Xenoblade released in Japan in around the middle of the Wii's life. When I got to play it, to say my feelings on the graphics were mixed is an understatement. Xenoblade offers players a downright beautiful world to explore, one which impressed on the Wii. However, I did not like the character models or the textures up close. They were very unappealing. The argument that they were good by Wii standards does not hold water because, put simply, they weren't. Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime 3, and a host of other games on the Wii put this one to shame using the same hardware.
On the New 3DS, Xenoblade has not fared much better. The environments which were once so gorgeous are stymied by either the hardware limitations or the screen itself. The notion that a game could be "too big for a handheld" is exemplified here. Much as I might complain about the character models and textures, that beauty I described in reference to the Wii version was present when played on a TV.
Simultaneously, and perhaps curiously, I prefer the visuals of the 3DS, which may run completely contrary to everything I just finished discussing. The game looks good on the 3DS; it does not look great, and the breathtaking vistas are lost on it. The best way I can describe it is that the textures and problems mentally bother me less on the New 3DS where my expectations are significantly decreased. This is not a PS3 or PS4 game, and based on what it is, it almost deserves a pass.
The graphics are, for me, the most difficult aspect to describe. Watch some videos online to see it for yourself, but even that is misleading compared to what you actually see on the small screen. They are by no means bad. They aren't especially great either. Which, I suppose, means that they are middle of the road, or, in other words, good. The graphics should not turn someone off from this game if it otherwise interests him or her.
SOUND
Sound is sort of a love-it-or-hate-it thing for Xenoblade. By way of backstory, when Xenoblade finally escaped from Japan on the Wii, it made its way to Europe first where it received an English dub with distinctly British accents. When it came to America, that same dub was used. Some might enjoy it, others might find it grating. I do not believe there is any way to hear the Japanese voiceovers--someone please correct me if I'm wrong--so this is your only option. The voices are pretty good, but the constant repetition of battle cries gets annoying very fast. Based on that, the immediate response might be that the sound can simply be muted, which is true. However, the music in this game is phenomenal. There is even an option to listen to the soundtrack through the 3DS. The music is beautiful, appropriate, and a true stand-out. Thus, while the player can simply mute the audio, a lot of gorgeous music is sacrificed by that, and there does not seem to be anything in the menus to allow the player to mute voices and/or sfx and just let the music play.
SUMMARY
I like Xenoblade Chronicles. I really do. In fact, I played through the majority of the game's story over the course of a few days, which is more than can be said of the Wii release which took me a lot longer to get this far. It is not a perfect game and I probably would have welcomed an HD upgrade on the Wii U. A significant issue with Xenoblade as of launch day is that it is the first New 3DS exclusive. Some players already have a New 3DS and have enjoyed the updates it features such as amiibo support and faster processing power. At this time, however, the general consensus is that a New 3DS is not a necessary upgrade, so many gamers are not even able to play this game. It is impressive that Xenoblade Chronicles 3D exists at all. This is a huge game and putting it on a handheld and making it completely functional was likely no small feat. At the same time, this is not a system seller, so it may not enjoy as large an audience as it rightly deserves.
All of the foregoing considered, I give Xenoblade Chronicles a 4/5 and a very strong recommendation for JRPG fans. You may love it, you may not. Give it a chance and let yourself get used to the battle system before dismissing it. This is one of the most unique JRPGs to come out in the modern era, and for those who get into it, they will find an excellent game with a lot to love. Don't buy a New 3DS just to play this, but if you have one already, give it a shot. You won't likely be disappointed.
The only downsides would be the fact that all the graphics aren't as crisp as the Wii version. But there is not way to get that "crispness" in the 3ds, so it's not worth taking a star away. The other downside would be the 3d effect really doesn't look at that good. It just looks crammed in.
