Product Description
Outnumbered and Outgunned, but Not Outmatched
Call of Duty: Ghosts is an extraordinary step forward for one of the largest entertainment franchises of all-time. This new chapter in the Call of Duty franchise features a new dynamic where players are on the side of a crippled nation fighting not for freedom, or liberty, but simply to survive. Fueling this all new Call of Duty experience, the franchise’s new next-gen engine delivers stunning levels of immersion and performance, all while maintaining the speed and fluidity of 60 frames-per-second across all platforms.
Single Player Campaign
Ten years after a devastating mass event, America’s borders and the balance of global power have changed forever. As what’s left of the nation’s Special Operations forces, a mysterious group known only as “Ghosts” leads the fight back against a newly emerged, technologically-superior global power. A New Call of Duty Universe: For the first time in franchise history, players will take on the underdog role with Call of Duty: Ghosts; outnumbered and outgunned, players must fight to reclaim a fallen nation in an intensely personal narrative. Gamers will get to know an entirely new cast of characters and visit locales in a changed world unlike anything seen in Call of Duty before.
Multiplayer
In Call of Duty: Ghosts you don’t just create a class, you create a soldier, a first for the franchise. In the new Create-A-Soldier system, players can change the physical appearance of their soldier by choosing the head, body type, head-gear and equipment, and for the first time in a Call of Duty game, the player can also choose their gender. With 20,000 possible combinations, this is the most flexible and comprehensive character customization in Call of Duty history. New dynamic maps are the evolution of multiplayer. They include interactive elements and player triggered events that make the environment evolve as each match goes on. The entire landscape can shift and force players to change tactics and strategies. Call of Duty: Ghosts introduces new tactical player movements. The new contextual lean system now allows players to lean around obstacles without adding button combinations or fully leaving cover. The new mantling system allows fluid movement over objects, while maintaining momentum. The knee slide allows for a natural transition from sprinting crouching to prone. Call of Duty: Ghosts delivers over 20 NEW Kill Streaks in Call of Duty: Ghosts - such as Juggernaut Maniac, the Helo Scout, the Vulture and the ODIN Strike. Players can even bring in guard dog Riley, from the single-player campaign, to protect and also to attack enemies. There are also over 30 NEW weapons, including an entirely new weapon class: Marksman Rifles.
Squads
Build your team and take up to 6 of them into battle in the all new Squads mode. This mode takes the best parts of the multiplayer experience and allows you to play either solo or cooperatively with the custom soldiers created and leveled up in multiplayer. The load-out choices you make for your Squad members will directly change the AI behavior of your squad-mates. Give your soldier a sniper rifle and he’ll behave like a sniper, and an SMG guy will be more run and gun.
Extinction
A completely new one to four player, co-op game mode featuring a unique blend of fast-paced survival gameplay, base defense, player customization and class leveling. Teamwork and communication are essential when playing Extinction, as your team faces an inhuman menace that has overrun an isolated Colorado town and you must eliminate the threat via any means necessary.

Pros:
- The game is only eight bucks for pc. This alone should be enough for just the single player campaign alone.
- The campaign is actually pretty good. While cheesy and cliche at multiple moments, the story had an interesting alternate history/future that was interesting to play through. There were also a variety in the gameplay during the missions. Some missions were underwater while others were in space.
- Bots! I actually found this a pretty useful feature in the modern Call of Duty's as they enable you to practice by yourself without having to find players online.
Cons:
- The multiplayer added a ridiculously annoying system of leveling up and unlocking weapons and attachments.
- There is a maximum of 700 people playing online on PC... and they're all playing TDM.
- Quickscoping is difficult (sort of), you have to dragscope most of the time (this may be a pro for some of you).
- Multiplayer maps are designed poorly; they are often far too large and complicated to find your enemies.
- Following the last point, the huge maps encourage camping. There is no map like Rust on MW2 to encourage actual combat.
- Lag spikes; I have a pretty good computer that runs the game on high settings at 50-60 fps. However, at times, there will be a 5-10 second freeze in which your player cannot move or do anything. This just makes you a sitting duck for other players.
- Weapon choices don't seem quite balanced.
Is CoD:Ghosts worth 60 bucks? Hell no. Is it worth 8? Hell yes.
Campaign: mediocre
It's also short, only around 5 hours on Regular difficulty. Ironically this works to the game's favor because it doesn't drag. When I think of Black Ops, I think of "Step One...!" When I think of CoD 4, I think of Prypiat and "Crew Expendable." There is no Reznov or Price in Ghosts. It's just a group of forgettable characters on a conventional military quest against a bad guy I fought pathetic. Even the few references to other media aren't done that well. On the other hand, in that short 5 hours, you get to play missions from under the sea to outside the atmosphere. You get to drive a tank like a bumper car and pilot a chopper like an arcade game. Most missions feel like deja vu if you've played MW or Black Ops before, and the few novel ones don't stand out. If the campaign were 10 hour and I had to play each type of mission twice as much, I'd probably complain. Fortunately, the 5 hours are a rush, even if a forgettable one.
Actually I do have one complaint about the campaign. The mission briefings are narrated like a story. Terrible choice for a video game, where if something is not experienced, it should at least be like a movie. Then again, all that has been done by other CoD games.
Multiplayer: I think it stays true to CoD, but I know little about that.
Unlockable weapons/equipment, perks, kill streaks, operations (challenges) are all present. There are plenty of better reviews on how the multiplayer stack up against other CoD and non-CoD games.
For a casual gamer new to CoD, the best I can say is that CoD multiplayer is kinda like CS, but fancier. For the same casual players, Private Match is a godsend. You can set up a Private Match to play with friends (or just by yourself); you have instant access to all weapons/perks/kill streaks/maps/most if not all game modes + full bot support. If you don't care to go through persistent growth experience, Ghosts remains perfectly playable. The only downside is you can't just open your game for any stranger to find and join.
Squads: The opposite of Private Match
If you instead want to experience the persistent growth of competitive multiplayer without the actual competition, Squads mode is for you. Here is a collection of 4 game modes focused on AI, co-op, and 1-on-1 competition. The popular Survival mode from MW3 makes a return, with 4 instead of 2 max players now. There is, however, no objective based Spec Ops missions. Unlike Private Match, Squads mode has match making to help you join up with strangers. Squads is the opposite of Multiplayer and is made possible by the game's AI, which is better than any other AI of this type that I've seen.
Extinction: Ah, I actually don't like it that much.
It's the equivalent of Zombies from Black Ops with aliens instead. I can't think of another analogy so just go watch a gameplay video. My problem with Extinction is that it's both short and objective based, thus reducing its replayability compared to other co-op modes in Ghosts. You have a separate progression track specific to this mode, and you can always try different play styles. But for me, if I can complete the mission with one setup, I don't see why i should bother with another. I also find the aliens lame compared to zombies. That's just me; many critics like this mode.
Performance:
There is no shortage of complaints against Ghosts' performance on the PC, especially for multiplayer. They are legit. In its defense though, I am able to play Ghosts on a system below its minimum requirement (Core Duo Quad 3.0, 4GB RAM, HD 4770 1GB) pretty smoothly. In single player, I could set most video options to normal, with a few high and few low and still play at a decent frame rate most of the time (below 60 for sure but I haven't checked fps). With most settings tuned to low, I can also play co-op and Extinction with the only serious slowdowns occuring at the beginning of a match and, surprisingly, at the menu screen both post-match and each time I start Ghost Multiplayer. If you have a good system, Ghost may not live up to your expectations, but if you have a crappy one, you may still be able to play, at least non-competitively.
Bottomline:
Ghosts is like one of the starter weapons in its multiplayer. It has a good collection of decent game modes. If you want a FPS with variety that you can enjoy casually, Ghosts is for you; it's perhaps better at this than any other FPS game out there. If you are a conniseur, every one of those modes may fall short. If you are a conniseur, this review isn't for you. If someday you evolve from casual to a specific taste, you can always get a more appropriate game.
Being an "older" gamer, I'm already jaded towards multiplayer these days. I don't play COD to go online anymore and play with random kids. I play COD these days with my husband only. We just play against each other in the older games & in those that have it, we play combat training type modes together with bots. It's really great in the past COD games - even with the bots all being true aimbots and exhibiting other inhuman behaviors & with no leveling. With that idea, we thought, based on reviews and explanations of this COD, that this mode might be improved on - that there might be more for us to do as well as being able to level without having to go play online with other people. On top of this, there's the quite realistic expectation that the game will be on par with new games of this same time period as far as how it runs and looks and that combat would at least be as gratifying, if not improved upon, from the past Infinity Ward CODs. That seems logical... but it's very, very wrong.
The first striking thing about this game is - the graphics are terrible! If I wanted a nostalgic visit to 10 years ago in video gaming, I'd just go play one of my games from back then. There are games from 2003 that look a million times better than this. I'm not even a person who is so picky about graphics - I'd take good old COD 1 graphics, but not these attempts at realism with poor quality textures, poor contrast and color, poor lighting/shadow levels that just make a murky, blurry. bloomy mess that gives you a headache. There are not enough graphics settings in the game to mess around with to even attempt to fix it or make it at least more bearable (I've yet to go figure out about tweaking it outside of the game and don't even really think it's worth the effort & would just rather go back to playing Black Ops 2).
Like lots of games that are poor PC ports, you feel like an extreme larda$$ with ice skates on. No tweaking of mouse sensitivity helps, there is no FOV adjustment - nothing to remedy this "feature."
And, most importantly to a game of this type is the combat - which is terrible and not at all gratifying. No matter how badly I suck at any of the previous COD games, at least I could feel like I was really shooting things... or being killed. They have all been gratifying in this respect, but not this atrocity. What exactly it is that makes it so - I don't know. Audio? Previously mentioned larda$$ syndrome? I can't honestly bear to play the game long enough to analyze it to say what the exact causes are.
On top of these important things, there's terrible console menus. Clunky is an understatement here. This is pretty typical of anything nowadays so I can even somewhat excuse games for that. I can still enjoy a game with crappy, lazy menus.
All in all - this was a total waste of money. I did see the bad reviews here, but just figured no one plays it like we do and that it would be fine so long as we weren't doing it for online multiplayer. Oops.
Amazon, like anyone else, has a no refunds policy on software (and suggested to me that I contact Activision... no thank you) - so you buy this, and you're stuck with it whether you can stand playing it for only 5 minutes or 100.
