If you like to do ridiculous dunks over and over again, do fancy dribbles with the ball for no real reason, and sink 3s from halfcourt, you may like this game.
If you actually want to play basketball, you probably won't enjoy it as much.
The core of the game revolves around a stunt meter, which you fill by showing off with dunks, dribbles, and plays such as alley-oops. When the meter is full, you become more powerful, gain a new set of moves, and can score up to 7 points with a single basket. The gameplay is repetitive with little in the way of tactical options. Defense consists solely of stealing, goaltending, or body-checking a dunker midair.
In Career mode you create a team of ballers by [bizarrely] combining the heads of real-life NBA players. Mine looks like the love child of Rip Hamilton and Yao Ming. You have the choice of guards, forwards, and centers, whose skills you can improve as you gain experience and levels. Skills are improved by using them - dunking a lot will level up your dunking skill. New courts and opponents are unlocked as you level up by completing challenges against local ballers. Along the way, more players will offer to join your team, so there is a relatively simple and straightforward roster management game there. You can then use your custom ballers in the other modes, such as Exhibition and Online play. You can also use real-life players instead.
Multiplayer is fun for casual play, and there is a ranking and stat system for online play. However, being with a group of friends and trash talking can make just about any activity fun.
The visuals are run through a sepia filter, to imply that the game is really a review of the past, a memoir to the rise of the great street baller [you!]. This theme is carried throughout the game in the menus, which have an 8mm film look throughout. I found the brown tones boring after a few hours and wished for a change in scenery. The models and environments are adequately made, while the animations are quite good. Players move with fluidity and the 1080 spin backflip dunks really come to life.
Verdict: fun for casual play, rent it or get it on the cheap.
