The storyline of New Super Mario Bros. is simple, but 100% classic Mario Bros. During a tranquil walk with Princess Peach, Mario witness a lightning strike on Peach's castle. Mario predictably races off to lend a hand, but no sooner has he stepped away from the always popular Peach, than he sees Bowser Jr. step into the picture and drag her away. As mario pursues them throughout both overworld and underworld, the appearance of Bowser and the Koopas shows that the list of fiends opposing him is longer than he expected. But Mario is not one to be put off by such things. Come along with Mario, Luigi and other friends as they venture into the depths of the Mushroom Kingdom to get Peach back once again.
Gameplay
Although New Super Mario Bros. is a modern addition to the Mario Bros. tome, it revels in the fact that it is an old school side-scrolling platformer through and through. The single player mode is set on 80 levels spread across eight worlds, with players assuming the role of either Mario or Luigi. As in all Mario Bros. games, the ultimate goal is to rescue Peach, but as players traverse game levels the immediate goal is to collect coins, hop on top of enemies, and break open blocks while searching for power-ups as you race to capture the flag at the end of each level. Each of the game's eight worlds climaxes with a boss battle tied into the abduction of Peach, in which players will need to utilize the game's six power-ups in order to have success.
Along with its single player mode New Super Mario Bros. for DS also features two different multiplayer modes. The first is the Mario vs. Luigi, 2-player competitive mode. Here it's brother vs. brother in a literal race for Stars. Players choose to play as either Mario or Luigi, with the goal to collect the Stars that appear throughout the stage at timed intervals. If one brother gets a star(s) first they can be stolen away by the other player by doing damage. The one who gets to the set number of stars wins. This mode uses local wireless DS Single-Card download play, so only one game card is needed. The other multiplayer mode revolves around mini-game play. There are variety of these, which can be engaged in on a one-on-one basis, or in tournament fashion with 2-4 players.
The Power-ups.
New Super Mario for DS contains contains six power-up options. Three of these, the Super Mushroom, the Fire Flower and the Starman are back from previous games. There are also three entirely new to the game, these being: the Blue Koopa Shell, which Mario can crawl into to protect himself and spin when inside it to attack enemies; the Mega Mushroom, which allows for a huge Mario; and the Mini-Mushroom, which makes Mario very small and able to get into places that wouldn't otherwise be available.

In case anyone is wondering...this is a different game than New Super Mario Bros. for the Wii...they both contain completely different levels. The Wii version allows up to 4 players to play on the same Wii at the same time...it's a fun game, but I like this DS game better.
There are 3 save slots, so my son has his own save and I have my own. He loves the game but has trouble after world 3, so I have to help him through some of the more difficult parts. He loves the minigames and begs me to play them with him. If you have 2 DS systems and 1 cartridge, then you can play the minigames against each other which is fun. I can't say I love the minigames as much as he does, but they are fun, quick, and it makes him happy. I just finished the main game a few minutes ago and it was a blast from beginning to end.
Each world is easy enough for casual gamers to get through and there are 3 coins in each level to collect...collecting all these coins gives more challenge for the more advanced gamer. The game got more difficult around world 6, so I went back through the earlier worlds again to collect those coins and to build up my extra lives. Then I came back to finish the game. To complete the game, you only have to go through 6 of the 8 worlds...the other 2 worlds have to be unlocked somehow.
Now that I completed the game, I need to go back and collect all those coins and unlock the two worlds I haven't gotten to yet.
Starting up the game, the first thing I noticed was that Bowser didn't kidnap the princess directly. He sends his kid, Bowser Jr., to kidnap her. After going through the first world, you fight Bowser like the classic NES Super Mario Bros. and drop him in magma. Afterwards, you spend the rest of the game chasing Bowser Jr. as he drags Toadstool across the worlds by her neck.
Mario's moves are all previously seen before. The legendary jump is still there, plus crouching. You can jump and stomp now, like in Yoshi's Island, and do wall jumps like in Super Mario 64. Power-ups are very common as well, and they seem to conveniently be right where you need them. The level design takes cues from Super Mario Bros. 3, with World's secret paths that can be unlocked by buying your way through with Star Coins. On top of this greatness, you can store one item on the touch screen for later use--just like Super Mario World!
The music is extremely catchy. It sounds cheap at first, but the more you listen to it, you'll find yourself humming it even when you're not playing. I also like the power-ups. A Mega Mushroom for smashing through crap in the way, a Mini-Mushroom for fitting through small spaces, tiny pipes and running across water, and also a Blue Shell that lets you plow through foes after running for a bit. That being said, there appears to be no way to fly in the game, but that's fine because it wouldn't help anyway. The levels are restricted to either completely vertical or completely horizontal, so flying is useless. This obviously came from the first Mario game. On that note, the exception to screen scrolling is in water levels, which flow around like SMB3 or World.
There are only minor flaws with this game. First of all, Mario seems a bit slow. If you're used to the SMB3 movement of Mario or even the "World" controls, you'll be a bit disappointed to find that they made Mario's movements a bit more realistic. He travels a little slower when carrying shells, water currents push you around making swimming your least-favorite thing about the game, and sometimes you try to jump over an enemy but realize Mario clips the front of them, and you get hit. That last thing is forgivable, but the other stuff kinda kills it for me bit by bit. Not to fear, the 1-ups in this game are easy to obtain. Speaking of which, that's one thing that in and of itself is a good and bad thing. Sure, you can run through a level and score like, five lives, but you'll probably never game over as a result. Especially since after dying you can easily find another 1-Up in the level, it makes dying useless, so they might as well just not even have lives. Or game overs.
Overall, this game took ALMOST everything that made Super Mario awesome (sans the flying, which you don't need anyway) and rolled it into one. Another thing I should mention is that it's got high replay value. Try running through the game and trying to unlock everything. You may find yourself picking it up again and again! I barely got the game today, and I'm already having memories of it. Nostalgia 2!
this game keeps you very entertained because there are alot of secret levels and its fun trying to find them. but if you wanna take a break from the actual game there are a lot of mini games you can play that are kinda like the Mario Party games and they are very fun too. you can even battle against other DS players.
this game has a lot of elements from the older and newer mario games and i think it is a good game for mario fans of all ages.
