The story for Partners in Time is that professor E. Gadd creates a time machine, and Princess Peach uses it to travel back in time. However, an evil alien race called the Shroob have taken over, and Peach is trapped there. The Mario Bros travel back to help, and are met with their baby selves. Thus, Mario and Luigi must work with their baby variants to defeat the Shroob and save the princess. Again, it’s your basic “Stop the evil, save the girl.” storyline, but that’s pretty commonplace in the Mario games, so I won’t count it against the game. As before, this game is an RPG, so expect to put in some time with it. My playthrough clocked in at around twelve hours.
Gameplay for Partners in Time is more or less an upgraded version of the gameplay in Superstar Saga. Gone is the order switching of bros. You control all four bros, one mapped to each face button. This sounds like a lot at first, but you quickly get used to it. Rather than having a huge hubworld to explore, like we had with BeanBean Kingdom in Superstar Saga, we are now just limited to Peach’s Castle, with multiple floors and time portals which contain an icon of where they lead, and when you need to visit a particular portal or person, the map will point out where you need to go, so that’s helpful.
Very early, you will find you can split the bros up to perform multiple tasks. This sounds like a good thing, and while it can be, it’s not without its problems, which we’ll get to later. The adult versions of Mario and Luigi operate with the A and B buttons respectively, and the baby versions are controlled with X and Y. You still use the shoulder buttons to switch modes, but you are not nearly as flooded with combinations this time.
Battles are more or less untouched from the last game, just having smoother animation and now making use of the top screen. Enemies will still give signs as to which bro they will attack, so you’ll need to pay attention. Having the babies in the battle helps deal some extra damage but other than that, their addition isn’t much to write home about.
Also, last time we had special moves that you could use in battle, as long as you have the energy for them. This time, we have Bro Items, items that act as special moves and can be used as long as you have them. These also make use of the top screen. The problem with this comes in the fact that it becomes very easy to cheese the enemies with them, because the game does not limit your use of them beyond having them in your inventory. As long as you’ve bought them, you can use them back to back, which is easy since the enemies give lots of cash for beating them. The game doesn’t punish you for spamming these items. Heck, there’s even a badge you can get that gives the wearer infinite bro items use (remember that for later).
But sadly, this is where I start to complain. The Baby gimmick, while neat at first, does start to get annoying as the game goes on. It feels like they took some of the focus away from the adults to make the babies feel more important. For example, only the babies get to use hammers. This means that if you get into a fight with some spiked enemies without the babies, you either have to use bro items or just run away. Speaking of, unless you spend hours grinding, the two teams alone feel very underpowered. To stand the best chance you need to have all four bros together. But sometimes enemies can just run up to you faster than you can avoid them, so you’ll either have to fight or flee.
Going back to battles, having to juggle four face buttons can get annoying at times. Mario is always A, Luigi is always B, Baby Mario is always X, and Baby Luigi is always Y. So, in a fight you might have to jump at one point, then use the hammer on the other, it can be easy to forget that you need to switch buttons. It’s not undoable, and maybe I just suck at remembering, you might have an easier time.
I should also mention that the game sees a noticeable spike in difficulty from Superstar Saga. I wasn’t sure if it was just well programmed enemies and such, or because it was often annoying to juggle the bros around. Also, towards the end of the game, the enemies and especially the final boss can spam back to back attacks at you, so you need to get perfect in dodging and countering.
Remember when I mentioned that badge that grants the wearer infinite bro items? I would never have been able to beat the final boss without having that badge on both Mario and Luigi and spamming Mix Flowers, which as far as I’m concerned are the most OP items in the game. You might call it cheating, but in my eyes, since the developers intentionally put that in the game, it’s a legit strategy.
Presentation wise, this game takes what worked about Superstar Saga, and makes it better. Four bros in play means more fun shenanigans. There is also your usual helper character, a sentient suitcase named Stuffwell. His speech is interesting. His words are rather jumbled, so while it’s odd, it’s well written enough that it gets the point across of what he’s saying.
One thing I didn’t like was how much abuse Luigi went through. He’s typically the butt of the jokes in the game, such as how only a select few characters even know his name, or how he gets bullied and trolled by the babies and then gets in trouble with Mario when he makes them cry.
In the last game, he got picked on too, but there were times when he had to step up to the plate and do things Mario could not. He had his own defining moments independent of Mario. Here, he doesn’t get that. While he does ultimately come out smelling like roses, I feel like he got picked on too much just for the sake of it. Maybe it’s because Luigi is my all-time favorite game character, but I just thought it was flat out mean at times. To be fair, a lot of that did get a rise out of me.
The worlds you explore are bright and colorful, and the enemies are well designed. They sadly got rid of a lot of the duos from Superstar, which in fairness was just a cosmetic thing above all else, but it would have been cool to see it return stronger here. But I must give special praise to the final dungeon, Peach’s Castle in the past, which has successfully been corrupted by the Shroob. The layout is identical, but it’s now full of aliens and darkness. Very well done, and a great way to cap off the game.
In the end, I’m sad to report that, at least where the original DS is concerned, this is the weakest link in the Mario and Luigi chain. That is not to say it’s bad, however. It’s still a fun game, and if you enjoyed Superstar Saga, you’ll like this one fine enough too. I would recommend you play it, but just be ready for some annoyances. On the whole, while I don’t regret playing and finishing this game, it will be a long time before I revisit it.
And that’s what I have to say about Mario and Luigi Partners in Time. Now it’s time to move onto what many consider to be the best game in the series: Bowser’s Inside Story, also on the DS. I do plan to do that soon, but it’ll be some time before I can even bring myself to play it. Word to the wise, if you intend to play the whole series, don’t play them back to back. Until then, train your baby for battle and fight off the menacing yet adorable Shroob, with Mario and Luigi Partners in Time.
My boyfriend's highly considering getting a DS Lite simply so he can play this game.
