Product Description

Can Mario beat Donkey Kong? Is Pikachu tougher than Yoshi? Find out as 12 of Nintendo's biggest stars battle in head-to-head competition. Battle through a tournament in 3-D fighting arenas or take on multiple players with special moves and unique strengths. Made in USA.

Amazon.com

Normally, Nintendo contract players such as Mario, Pikachu, Link, Donkey Kong, Bowser, and Kirby are generally happy and well-mannered, but in Super Smash Bros. Melee, the pleasantries get thrown out and the gloves (except for Mario's) come off. This update of the N64 favorite features these and other video game icons in furious, yet utterly absurd fisticuffs that usually make for a smashing good time. Just make sure you have at least one human opponent to pound on.

Starting off with 14 characters (an additional 11 are waiting to be unlocked), the game has a pretty standard premise--let Nintendo's stars beat on each other until the timer runs out. However, a lot of emphasis is put on knocking opponents off ledges while avoiding the same fate. In typical Nintendo manner, there are quite a few power-ups to assist you in the melee. The actual combat isn't as intricate as in other fighting games; however, the ultra-cartoony layout of the many, many arenas sometimes adds a strategic element not usually found in similar titles.

Super Smash Bros. Melee's strength lays in the mayhem created in four-player fights. The camera does an excellent job of positioning itself so all combatants are constantly visible. Also, Melee sports some of the best visuals seen in a Nintendo product. All the characters are highly detailed, and the movements of each are smoothly infused with personality. Donkey Kong lumbers and Princess Peach fights with grace.

As the multiplayer mode is the key reason for this game's existence, the single-player mode is decidedly weak. The game features an adventure mode that plays somewhat like an old-school, side-scrolling Mario game. Sadly, despite its good looks, its gameplay is rather uninspired. This game is clearly at its best when there are two or more players with controllers in their hands. --Mark Brooks

Pros:

  • Fantastic graphics and sound keep the action upbeat
  • Many new characters and other goodies to unlock Cons:
    • Single-player experience is comparatively weak
    • Too cute for a few folks
    • Adventure mode is boring

Haven't played this game in over 18 years. I was 4 years of age playing this beauty. Now I'm older and I have this magnificent product in my hands. I feel the inner child within me screaming with joy. The delivery was just as it promised to be. And tracking it was very easy. Would very much recommend purchasing this :) ♡

This Game is absolute madness on the Gamecube and continues to be one of the best reasons to get an Nintendo Wii. It's that not only can you play Wii games on it but Gamecube games, Super Nintendo Games, Nintendo Entertainment System Games and many more on the online universe for pennies on the dollar but the Gamecube is perfect for this reason too and with other games such as (Resident Evil 4, Viewtiful Joe, Metroid: Prime, Ikaruga etc.) that getting a gamecube for twenty bucks or so is just as much a good investment.

The total quality of Super Smash Bros: Melee is easily the best out of the series. Adding the most to an already perfect game made this game a roaring successor to the original Nintendo 64-bit Game Console.

Adding 15 some characters all new to the mix, a small mini-game missions' section where you had to complete different obstacles, a trophy section with real game/character/item facts, newly remastered stages w/ classic 64-bit stages, a new single player Adventure mode where you can roam through the worlds of Nintendo's All Stars, and a survival game system where you can battle the polygon warriors in endless waves to the death. This game is still revered as the best in the 3 game series as to date.

The Versus mode adds new battle modes such as invisible players, sudden death capabilities or Giant Melees which keep the battles from becoming stale. The fighting capabilities allow for a greater range of attacks and make use of fade-away dodge features which allow versatile tactics to keep effect through the game-play.

Though despite all the praises that can be said about the versus play there is a glaring flaw with the control which is the action reading ability from the game. What that means is the control is a lot less fluid than with Smash Bros Original and Smash Bros Brawl, many times the controls will do oppositely what you intend or not read certain actions from the players as they play the game. In the heat of battle these slight failures and miscommunications of the control schemes will become more and more obvious the more you play them but on the flip-side of that argument that gives the game a great bit of unpredictability.

For those who've played either the prequel or the sequel will see the clunky control when they play it but it is by no means bad control. All in all this game is a classic in multi-player fighting games and at many prices will be worth buying whether to play on the Gamecube, Wii, Nintendo Online or however you play it.

Game Score: 9/10

The first Super Smash Bros. was definitely my favorite game for the Nintendo 64, and continues to be. The fighting style, tactics, and just general theme were captivating and surprisingly difficult to master. I still have trouble defeating a team of 3 level 9s! Fast forward just 2 years, and out comes Super Smash Bros. Melee. The graphics and movesets have been revamped by a surprising amount. Things like air-dodging, chargeable smash attacks, side-B moves, pummeling (punching the enemy once you have them in a grab [with the z-button]), and more elemental attacks have all been added to create a fighting game with combos and mindtricks that rivals those of the most advanced 2D fighters. Just a note: the "combos" are a series of single attacks that allow you to quickly pulverize an enemy, instead of a series of button presses that create a combo. This makes SSBM a variable fighter, and allows for people to create their own combos (with varying success of course). There has also been a large upscale in the number of the characters. SSB has 8 initially, and 4 unlockables; SSBM has 15 initially (Zelda and Sheik!), and 11 unlockables! The single player modes have also been transformed into a behemoth of challenging and enjoyable events. Many characters are unlocked in the single-player modes, although it is also possible to unlock all the characters by playing a ton of versus matches (up to 1000 matches in total I think?). SSBM was probably one of the best sequels an already great game could ever get. Super Smash Bros. Brawl, on the other hand, was release 7 years after SSBM, but not much was changed at all. Some moves were changed for characters, and several more characters were added (but a couple were taken away). You could now air-dodge as much as you want and still be able to keep jumping, but the gameplay itself has slowed down, something many SSBM advocates have criticized. SSBM is considered by most to be the best game in the series (and by some to be the greatest fighting game of all time). I strongly recommend that you buy this game, even if you think this is a game for little kids. I have only just bought this game, even though it came out in 2001! Buy the game, and you'll be glad you did!

The original Super Smash Bros Melee case and game manual was included which is already a win in my books, wasn’t Players Choice either the OG!!!! Only downside is that the game disc is questionable with medium scratches on it, game could’ve atleast been less than 60$ if the condition was below average but hey atleast the game works at the end of the day, so I’m blessed ig

For some reason I never actually had a Gamecube when I was younger but have fond memories of playing it at friends houses, so I wanted to invest in a Gamecube collection as an adult. Despite having not actually played this game since buying it, I know I will eventually get round to playing it as it is such a classic. Came packaged very well and can't complain with the box or the disc itself.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nix für Einzelgänger, aber das wohl beste Multiplayerspiel
Reviewed in Germany on November 14, 2002
