Product Description
Product Description
Luigi has a lot of work to do in his very first starring role. He needs to find his missing brother Mario in a creepy and mysterious haunted mansion. Armed only with a flashlight and a customized vacuum cleaner, he must rid the mansion of ghosts and save the day. Made in USA.
Review
When Luigi's Mansion was first announced, many assumed it would follow in the legendary footsteps of Super Mario World and Super Mario 64. The game doesn't approach the epic scale of either of those titles, but once you get used to its smaller scale, the various charms of this game do become obvious.
The game involves you, as Mario's brother Luigi, trying to exorcise a haunted mansion of ghosts by sucking them into a vacuum cleaner. It sounds easier than the previous cinematic attempts by the Ghostbusters and the Catholic Church, but it's not. The complications and cleverness of the game manifest in the use of light and shadow. Many ghosts cannot be seen unless you reveal their shadows or manipulate the objects in a room to make them appear. These imaginative--but never frustrating--puzzles add to the otherwise simplistic process of catching the smaller ghosts by freezing them with a beam of light and sucking them up with your Hoover backpack.
It's only a minor classic, but Luigi's Mansion does show off some off the GameCube's graphic effects and provides a game the whole family can enjoy. If only it were a bit longer. --David Jenkins. -- Amazon.co.uk

Story: From what I gather, Luigi wins a contest that awards him a mansion. Mario has been kidnapped by King Boo and you must find and rescue him in the mansion.
Gameplay: Action/Adventure game. You go through a mansion trying to turn on the light in each room by trapping ghosts in your Poltergust 3,000 (a vacuum). Your vacuum has 2 options, suck and blow. When trying to capture ghosts, they have a number on them and you must get that number down to zero before they will be sucked in. Once a ghosts is in the vacuum's stream (first by stunning them with the flashlight), you need to rotate the control stick to the opposite way the ghost is facing. Most of the main ghosts you have to discover a way to startle them to start the process. It may be opening a window, catching them when they are distracted, rocking a chair, etc. Each has a special way to take them down and it is a lot of fun trying to figure it out. You also get special vacuum powers later on such as fire, water, and ice. Each is used to clear certain rooms in the game. To continue through the mansion, you must find keys to unlock new doors. Once a key is found, you can check the map to see what door it opens. You also have the ability to scan ghosts to see a hint at their weakness. As you travel through the mansion, you will also get a boo meter in the game that helps track down the boos. You can't get into the last room without trapping all the boos first. The boos have a number by them and you have to follow them room to room until you capture them.
Conclusion: Graphics are good for the GameCube. Controls are easy. The game is probably 3-5 hours. It was longer than I thought and a few of the ghosts are pretty tough to capture/figure out. Worth getting if you still have a GameCube or even a Wii since the Wii will play EVERY GameCube title.
The first thing that impressed me was the graphics. They are so well done in that they detailed, colorful, bright and just "pop" out of the screen at you. Secondly, the sound is great and matches the artwork beautifully. I have surround sound and this was a perfect match for the game. Finally, you should buy the game because of the game play. Its intricate but interesting. No detail was left out in how the player can interact with the game and its environment. It was like playing Ghostbusters but Luigi-Style. For once, I liked seeing Luigi get credit for all of his hard work. He is the hero of this game. After winning a mansion, it becomes Luigi's job to save Mario from a house full mean, nasty spirits being lead by the Boo's. Again, it is a well-made game which any gaming ethunsiastist should own.
Kinda hard to figure out
Not this time! This time, Mario has gotten himself in some deep stuff and needs rescued himself! That's right, Mario has been captured by the ghosts and it's up to my Main Man Luigi to save the day. You guide Luigi through the mansion, sucking up ghosts Ghostbuster style. I'll admit, this game can be quite difficult and it took some time to finish. You're in a mansion and several doors are locked. It can be tricky finding your way around, even if you do have your map. Many of the ghosts can be difficult, too. Before you can even fight a ghost, you have to figure out a way to bring it out of hiding and fight you. Finding the exact procedure to get the ghost to come out and fight you can be hard to figure out and battling the ghost can be difficult as well.
At the end of the game, be prepared to try your patience. It will take some practice to finish this one.
Now I'm an adult and playing the game and I realized how the game wasn't as scary as I thought it was. It's fun, unique for it's generation, stars Luigi's and one of the better Mario games out there. It helps that there's a Luigi's Mansion 2 coming out.
This game was the game that gave Luigi's definite character trait of being afraid of ghosts and introducing E. Gadd to the Mario series as he makes appearances after this game to show that Luigi's Mansion will not be forgotten. Heck, Luigi's Mansion even got a stage in Brawl.
The game is not to disappoint. It just saddens me how I waited 10 years before finally getting the game despite beating it when I rented it at Blockbuster.
