Product Description
Amazon.com
An insidiously addictive simulation game, Zoo Tycoon allows players to create their own zoo, but not just any zoo. It's completely free-form: Start with fences for your exhibits, then pick animals and give them toys, foliage, and anything else you want. For your customers, you can lay down paths to lead them around, then add food stands, amusement rides, even maps and trash cans. Not sure what you need? The zoo advisors will tell you how to make the animals happy, and the customers themselves will tell you what they're looking for, be it snacks, more animals, or anything else. There's also a vast amount of background information on each critter--its diet, its habitat, etc.--which can be useful when you're adding a macrauchenia or a Loch Ness Monster. In all, you can choose over 100 animals, plus countless habitat and park embellishments.
What makes Zoo Tycoon Complete Collection especially compelling is its inclusion of the expansion packs Marine Mania and Dinosaur Digs, so you can add dolphin shows to your zoo, or even a T-Rex or wooly mammoth. Be sure to maintain those worn-out fences, though, or you could have big trouble on your hands.
Zoo Tycoon is a great game for kids because while they'll have terrific fun crafting the zoo of their dreams, they'll also get a reality lesson about what customers want, and how their choice of expenditures ultimately affect the bottom line (that nacho stand sounds tasty, but is it making money?). If you've made a good zoo, customers will be happy, and the money will roll in. And it's also the kind of game grown-ups can enjoy, because there are so many possibilities. Be wary, however, of trying to sneak in 20 minutes of play before bedtime because you'll probably stay up a lot longer than you planned. (Ages 7 and older) --David Horiuchi
Pros:
- Great game for kids and parents to play together.
- Endless replay possibilities
- Educational value in its animal information and "real world" economics
Cons
- Sometimes tiresome trying to get an animal's exhibit just right
- How much free time do you have to spare?

If you've ever played any version of Sim City, this is essentially the same - just with a zoo theme. And it's as equally addictive as the city version. This is one of those games that once you sit down and start playing, you're going to find that four or five hours pass by and you don't even notice. Once you start building your zoo and the visitor traffic starts to pick up, you can't help but want to add the next exhibit...and the next, and the next...etc.
I actually find that Zoo Tycoon is more complex than Sim City. Just building each animal habitat takes some work. If those animals aren't happy believe me - they complain...loudly...and endlessly. The Complete Collection also includes the dinosaur and marine expansion packs, which are incorporated right into the game. The list of animals and terrains available is so extensive that you could probably play this for years and never use them all.
Just a few tips:
* I'm running Windows 7 and had no problem installing & playing the game. You don't need internet access. The *ONLY* thing that took me a minute to figure out was the screen resolution. If you find that the game has a "stretched" look to it, click on the blue floppy disc icon (yes, really - a disc) and that's where you'll be able to adjust it to better fit your monitor. You can also adjust the "blending" of the terrain, which makes each exhibit a lot cooler.
**EDITED UPDPATE** - I've been playing this nonstop for over a week and didn't have any problems until I tried to put in a medium-sized dinosaur park. I got about halfway through the park and for some reason it started getting glitchy. The graphics got really slow and choppy - to the point that it was annoying to keep playing. I tried again with a new dino park and had the same problem. However - all the other parks played fine (scenarios, marine parks, large zoos, etc.).
* Play through the tutorials - it definitely helps. Zoo Tycoon is pretty self-explanatory, but there are a lot of features I would have missed if I'd skipped the tutorials. It also really helps to google images of zoo tycoon to get great ideas for creative parks.
* Go online and google for the "cheat" codes. There's a ton of codes that unlock additional features (more foliage, shelters, endangered animals, etc.) simply by renaming guests. If you find that you're missing something that is listed as an animal favorite, odds are it's one of the locked items. The only other way to get the locked items is by funding Research & Conservation, but it's slow and expensive.
* Don't ignore the financial side of the game. It adds a whole new level of interest once you start tracking & adjusting your revenues and expenses. The game is detailed enough that it gives you an itemized list of every expense, so you can see exactly which ice cream stand is in the red, or which animal enclosure is too expensive to maintain.
* On the same note - restaurants, restaurants, restaurants! I worked on four different zoos before I finally got the hang of the finances and stopped going belly up. Ticket sales won't cut it. Those guests aren't there for the animals - they *really* want a pizza stand on every corner, lol!
* Pay attention to the male & female icons. I put in one exhibit and it took me over an hour to figure out why they were so unhappy - turns out I had put in an entire herd of males, and believe me - they weren't happy about it!
* And - some animals are never happy, no matter what you do (I'm looking at YOU bongos!). Others are cash cows - warthogs, flamingos, and half of the marine animals reproduce so fast I can hardly keep up with selling them before their exhibit is overcrowded.
Anyway - I HIGHLY recommend this game, especially if you like designing and creating things. This isn't a game that you "win" - there's no levels or puzzles involved. But it DOES challenge your creativity and imagination. It's also the ultimate time-suck, so player beware, lol!
As you place your creatures in your zoo, they begin to make noise and move about. The zoo keeper will show you what the animal needs to make it happy.
You hire tour guides, zoo keepers, maintenance, scientists, All to help run your zoo.
There is a variety of buildings to entertain the guest, food buildings to feed the guests. A large variety to make your guests happy. Some of these are set so you can charge what you want, as to make money for your zoo.
There is a section where you can set up a marine show, that is so amazing.
There is a section where you buy a dinosaur eggs and hire a scientists. The dinosaurs hatch and begins to need their care.
All of the ZOO TYCOON s are great, I fell you can't go wrong with no matter which one you choose. The Ultimate ZOO TYCOON will amaze you. I recommend you try it.
I love sitting at the desk playing this game. The entire series of ZOO TYCOON is money well spent, and will give enjoyment to the young and the old.
I give all the ZOO TYCOONS a 5 star rating.
I've been jonesing to play this game for months after finding my original disc 2 in a box of old things. Disc one was nowhere to be found. I finally caved and shelled out to get another brand new copy. This game is hard to find, it's not available for download anywhere, and even used hard copies are scarce. I have no regrets. This game, while lacking in the graphics department due to it being almost 20 years old, has LOADS of content. The scenarios are exactly as I remember, and there are enough hours of gameplay to make the $50 I spent 100% worth it. Also, there's only one disc, so I can't misplace half of the game this time around. It installed perfectly on my windows 10 computer. I suggest installing the original game and the expansion pack before launching the game itself, it's much easier than digging through files after the fact.
I also see no difference from this European copy to the original American copy I had previously, I'm not sure what the other reviewers are referring to.
