Editorial Reviews

Kathleen Edwards' VOYAGEUR is the acclaimed Canadian singer/songwriter's fourth album, and her first since ASKING FOR FLOWERS. Produced by Justin Vernon (aka Bon Iver) and Edwards, VOYAGEUR is less of a departure than it is a journey, and like any transforming trip, it demands that we let go of any preconceptions about the destination. Aided by the musical support of fellow travelers Justin Vernon and Norah Jones, VOYAGEUR features standout tracks such as "Change the Sheets," "Mint" and "A Soft Place to Land".

Waited a little bit to write this review until I had listened to this CD a lot. I find that music with staying power sort of seeps in and grows on you. At first listen, not all the songs were appreciated fully, but after listening a while, it's really hard to find a bad one on this. "Change the Sheets" has been previously released, but I simply love this toe tapper. "A Soft Place to Land" is such a beautiful song, with ASMR-inducing chord progressions. "Mint" is tremendous...the hardest rocking tune on this...simple, but lyrically interesting on the front end. Would like to know Ms. Edwards motivation for writing "Going to Hell", but related to it instantly because I was coincidentally reading " Empire of the Summer Moon: Quanah Parker and the Rise and Fall of the Comanches, the Most Powerful Indian Tribe in American History " which had accounts of the living hell the pioneers endured. Most of the songs cover downer or wistful topics, "Sidecar" being the notable exception, but that does not detract from its listenability to me at all. In short, this is a great set of beautiful songs, which is what we are accustomed to seeing from her.

the voyageurs are well known to any ontarian or michigander--the first people to pierce the impenetrable forests of these lands were priests seeking to convert "salvages" to papism. many of our cities and bays that aren't named for native americans are named for or by these voyageurs--marquette, charlevoix, detroit, and cadillac. kathleen has been on this sort of wilderness-piercing expedition on a far more important quest: to hear and express the things that make the people into the stern stuff needed to survive in the long cold, the icy blue mornings, the glare on the roads, the loneliness of the endless highways and tiny towns that in the mining days were bordellos and bars clustered together for mutual defense and support, the pasties broiled on a shovel over a coal fire, the canadian whiskey ferried across the lakes' frozen surface by car or cutter (a four-runner sleigh designed for freight) and pulled by teams of percherons. every release by kathleen edwards is a cause for celebration, and as her talent and skill grow, each celebration is greater than the last.

I am not a "music" person. I listen to the songs that I like and don't worry about who wrote what, or who influenced whom. If it sounds good and I can connect with it, then I buy it. So it is no surprise that I had never heard of Kathleen Edwards. I read a review of this album somewhere and it appeared to be music that I might like. Well, I am now a huge fan of K. Edwards. The songs are great, some better than others. It has replaced Florence + the Machine in my car's CD player. Based upon what I have heard I went out and purchased all of her previous releases. Her voice has that edge to it that makes her distinctive; like Florence, like Melissa Ethridge, and like Rosanne Cash. I highly recommend this CD to anyone who simply likes music well sung.

Not being a fan of Bon Iver I had my doubts about this album, because it was produced by Justin Vernon of that band, but more importantly Edwards and Vernon have become "friends" and that is what worried me the most. Upon first listen, I was less worried than before I heard any of it, but I still had doubts. Some things felt off, the album has a non-typical of Kathleen Edwards ethereal sound to it, a spacey folk thing for white people in the suburbs going on here and there. The influence Justin Vernon the producer is definitely present, however the influence of new "friend" Justin Vernon does not detract from the CD as much as I feared. At its worst it sounds like a poorly produced Wilco album where the experimental sounds and jams over power a weak girly voice. Mostly the songs are true to what all of us Kathleen Edwards fans expect. This is a solid album, there is only one standout track that I think might actually suck and that is "Sidecar" other than that it is a sweet listen. I should have had more faith in Edwards as an artist, there was no reason to suspect she would let another person over influence her style. She is still a loud-mouthed girl with the vocabulary of a drunken sailor who is kicking ass just as she always has.

Kathleen Edwards' fourth album is a wonderful progression from her previous three. "Failer," "Back to Me," and "Asking for Flowers" were all terrific records, with a definite alt-country sound. By her own admission, Kathleen wanted to expand her sound and move away from the alt-country label that had been stuck on her. She has done just that with "Voyageur." Her songwriting is as strong as it's ever been, and the co-production of Justin Vernon (aka Bon Iver, and Kathleen's beau) has helped bring new and cool sonic nuances to Kathleen's sound. The band is great, too. There are many standouts on this record--personally, I don't think there's a bad song on the album--but "A Soft Place to Land" has to be one of the most beautiful songs I've heard in years. "Voyageur" will be the album that brings Kathleen the wider recognition she so richly deserves.

I have all KE CDs and this one has the most organic musicianship of all.
Since I play along with my favorite CDs, I am more focused on the bandplay than the lyrics. This band meshes together and with the voice in a way that approaches a single instrument. Their interaction is more apparent under headphones. As to music structure, she is still Queen of the Relative Minor as in all past works, so the sound is very familiar to me but with enough adventure in rhythms and instruments to be refreshing. I never recommend music but can tell you this is another KE CD done with heart, dedication and attention to detail. Don't listen to it in the car or while working around the house. Put on the headphones and be still.

5.0 out of 5 stars Reposant et propice à l'évasion
Reviewed in France on August 23, 2015

5.0 out of 5 stars PAISAJES SONOROS
Reviewed in Spain on June 24, 2012

5.0 out of 5 stars Lovely Pop Album
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 25, 2012
I loved Kathleen Edwards' previous 3 albums but having read some mixed reviews for Voyageur I was unsure whether to buy this one.
I am so glad I did.
I was unsure on the 1st listen but having played it a few times I love it.
It sounds different from her previous albums, more of a polished pop sound.
But this doesn't make it any less of a great album.
Kathleen's voice is as lovely as ever and there is not a weak song on it.
Change the Sheets, Sidecar and Mint are great catchy country/pop songs. Soft Place to Land and House Full of Empty Rooms are lovely ballads with some gorgeous harmony vocals.
Highly recommended.
