Almost immediately after the release of `The 20/20 Experience', comparisons to `Future Sex/Love Sounds' were brought on and people were simply dismissing `The 20/20 Experience' as a secondary venture. I take issue with this. `The 20/20 Experience' is NOT `Future Sex/Love Sounds', and any true fan of Timberlake wouldn't want it to be. Artists need to grow and mold their sound and present us with new things in order to sustain their reputation as true talents of their craft. Timberlake does that in spades all over these ten tracks; each dripping with experimental style that glistens and draws the listener in.
This is a beautifully cohesive album that works brilliantly as a collective piece, and maybe less so as individual songs. Yes, listening to songs in solidarity and not in the context of the entire album may cause a different reaction from the listeners, but dedicating and hour+ to actually ingesting the album as a whole you may have a different feel.
As my title suggests, you need to let this album marinade in order to appreciate the magic of it all.
The first single from the album is easily a plow at introducing a more polished sound with spice and the allure of Jay-Z (as if Timberlake wasn't draw enough). It works the more you listen to it, despite the fact that my initial listen was underwhelming. The beauty of this album is that it works so wonderfully together that even the flaws begin to shine thanks to the complete feeling they add to the album itself. I actually would love this song if Jay-Z's part were cut. It is just stupid and adds nothing to the track. The lyrics are simple and meaningless and kind of silly, which takes away from the feeling of smoothness. The second single is the infinitely better `Mirrors'. I say infinitely, which may be a bit of a stretch, since `Suit & Tie' is NOT a bad song, but `Mirrors' just feels like vintage Timberlake with a kick. The beat is reflective of something off of `Future Sex/Love Sounds' but the progression and killer chorus help lift this track into something new and fresh. The lyrical meaning is sincere and it is beautifully composed. I love how the beat of the track doesn't change much from verse to chorus and so on, but Justin uses his voice as an instrument, changing the key in his voice to add color to each segment of the song.
After that, the album is a steaming pot of diverse and experimental connected by an old-school vibe that is produced to the gills and delivers a clean, modern and sophisticated sound.
Club heavy offerings like `Don't Hold the Wall' (probably the sickest track on the album) and `Tunnel Vision' are made to keep Timberlake relevant to a generation obsessed with getting nasty on the dance floor, and Timberland's slick beats and development of sound are a perfect match for Timberlake's undeniable sex appeal and slinky seductive pull. `Let the Groove Get It' is a tad too repetitive and chaotic for my liking, like a big band take on a club track with redundant chanting on the chorus, but others seem to love it to death and it does have a bouncy atmosphere that makes you want to move. `Pusher Love Girl' opens the album and is probably the perfect representation of the approach Timberlake took here. It is smooth as all get out and feels very classic in construction. The `after song' carries a lot of weight here because it progresses the sound and shows the more advanced side of the album, the progressive movement of sound.
I'll just stop here and say that I have never had a problem with length if it served a purpose, and the extended length of these tracks certainly serves a purpose, as they did on `Future Sex/Love Sounds'. Consider the song itself foreplay and the `after song' the moment when Timberlake brings it all home.
The dirty pop of `Strawberry Bubblegum' and the soul band beauty of `That Girl' mark significant moments on the album where Timberlake adds depth and color to his vision. `Strawberry Bubblegum' especially works on so many levels, from the cheeky lyrics to the fun musicality to the pitch perfect vocal delivery. It just pops (pun intended). `Spaceship Coupe' is also a beautifully composed track. My only complaint is the use of alien terminology on the track. I'm just tired of the tired use of space/aliens in music these days. It just feels corny now.
And that leaves me with the grand opus of `Blue Ocean Floor'; the albums magical closing. I don't know if I have words for how incredible this song is, for so many reasons. First and foremost, the song is so earnest and `felt'. The song is also completely removed from all signs on Timberlake, void of the charisma and charm and completely drenched in this newfound depth. The chorus is something magical, with the perfect combination of sound and emotion. It is an experimental sound that actually reminds me a lot of Team Sleep, Chino Moreno's (lead singer of the Deftones) side project from the early aughts. The musicality isn't steeped so much in actual `music' but more composition of sound and it almost has a very wet sound, as if it were actually comprised of sounds found on the ocean floor. Very futuristic and progressive and serves as a new benchmark for Timberlake to now surpass.
So, that completes my thoughts on the album. I'm in awe of it as a collective piece, of which it works rather gloriously. In parts, I can see flaws (especially on `Let the Groove Get In' and `Spaceship Coupe') but in the context of the album they serve purpose and feel connective and integral. NOTHING here feels like filler, which is so important with an album this trimmed down.
And joy to the world that Timberlake is releasing a second half to this album (to complete 20 tracks) later this year.
Personal ranking:
1) Blue Ocean Floor
2) Don't Hold the Wall
3) Strawberry Bubblegum
4) Mirrors
5) Tunnel Vision
6) Pusher Love Girl
7) That Girl
8) Suit & Tie
9) Spaceship Coupe
10) Let the Groove Get In
Whereas, Clive Davis repeats chart stats as if they are part of the lexicon of American Life, when it clearly does not save for maybe Whitney's career, which ironically was patterned after Diana Ross' at least in the beginning.
So what does this have to do with "The 20/20 Experience"? Graduates of the Disney school from Justin to X-Tina to Ryan Gosling, learned the business through the old way by lots of rehearsal and living the blood, sweat and tears of their success.
Upon initial listening, "Suit & Tie" grabbed me right a way. Because and due to its classic sound.
He proved the alibum's consistency with his performance of the 2nd song.
The reason I will never be able to give any Timberlake release that fifth star has little to do with his current music. It has more to do with the fact that he has still walked away from that Super Bowl wardrobe malfunctioning with his "Suit & Tie" on. Janet Jackson is still gathering what's left of her music career, relegated to celebrating her marriage to the admittedly super wealthy and sexy Wissam Al Mana. So I guess she is still in "control" of her finances.
I'm glad I only paid a measly $7 for this, well, experience.
Here it is almost 2 years later and I'm still loving this experience. Just discovered a new favorite "You Got it On"! Such a mini masterpiece that truly deserved to win the Grammy Album of the Year!!!
