-What's New?-
Milla vs. Jude Storyline: You have two different perspectives to play from. One from Milla's and one from Jude's. Although the main-plot does not change, certain aspects of the stories are portrayed differently between both. This adds replay-ability to series which previously simply relied on the GRADE system for second playthroughs.
Combat is of the utmost importance when talking about any Tales games. Xillia employs a battle system called the Double Raid, where you can link up with any character in your party to perform combos and special attacks. If you link up with Alvin, for example, he is capable of breaking guards on enemies. Double Raid is an essential aspect of the combat and it's really enjoyable to use.
Upgrading in previous Tales games have always been fairly shallow. Lillium Orbs attempts to solve this problem with a tree-upgrade system. Similar to the tree branches in Final Fantasy X, players can customize how a character develops. Artes, skills, and stat boosts are all linked to how you spend your points in the tree.
No Overworld Map: Instead of having an overworld map, you are put into smaller instanced areas with a larger density of monsters roaming around. Although I was never a huge fan of this change, you are able to gain access to fast-travel earlier than in previous games, making side-questing and back-tracking far less tedious.
-Overview-
The visuals are a step up from what players have seen in Graces F. The backdrops are beautiful, and the art, despite the limited graphical prowess, is done very well. The character models look great, and the animations, especially the victory dances after each battle, are top notch. You can really tell that a larger budget was used to create this game, as the art direction is improved over the likes of Graces. The color palette used is darker than what was used in previous games, while luminosity is used to make the game pop more in certain areas. Towns are varied, however, some assets are clearly re-used, especially those in port towns, but it's only a small negative.
Voice acting is sub-par to good. Performances for Jude and Alvin stick out as well-done, while others tend to feel a bit awkward. Milla's voice acting being one example. Some awkward pauses tend to make the pacing of the game seem off, but overall, it's a solid performance and commendable for its effort. Dialogue can become a bit cheesy and can tend to drag-on at times, but in comparison to other Tales game, the intensity and the main plot picks up fairly early in the game.
The combat is really enjoyable. If you're a fan of any fighting game, you'll find the combat system to be a great hybrid. The battles are always active, and it's really fun pulling off combos, special moves, and mystic artes. The AI is less dependable on you to take care of them. They can, for example, be programmed to use gels in certain instances. All of the other tactics options are still there, and are essential in some of the boss fights. The flexibility of the combat system is a huge plus. You can dodge, perform combos, and like with the majority of other Tales games, TP and HP are vital to the success of the battles.
The story is the standard run-of-the-mill Tales adventure with its usual twists and turns. You're introduced to a main protagonist who attempts to save the world from the bad guys, which often simply boils down to the government involving themselves in mana thievery. However, what makes the Tales game so great is the interaction between the characters. The sub-plots that occur through optional skits to the victory quotes after each battle adds another dimension to how character development is done. This is story of friends banding together to work toward a common goal, and Namco Bandai does an excellent job of developing those relationships. The dialogue, especially those in skits, are humorous. I caught myself chuckling and wanting to know more about each character's backgrounds and aspirations. Whether the characters are making fun of each other, or adding valuable information to the plot, it's enjoyable to hear what the characters have to say. The cast, however, is smaller, sporting only six playable characters.
This game also does a great job in the music department. Boasting a wide variety of tracks, often comprising of old-school battle themes to epic orchestral pieces to more sombered and relaxed pieces. Sound effects do a great job to adding a more tactile feel to the combat. However, voice acting quality could use an upgrade.
Menus look and navigate nicely. There hasn't been much changed in this department.
-Summary-
Tales of Xillia is well worth your time. If you're a fan of RPGs, you deserve to check this game out.
Visually, the 3D overworld camera is quite welcome and the graphics range from decent to gorgeous. The style of the first city is particularly impressive, a starry, arcane-looking metropolis that is set in a perpetual night.
The music is okay, I guess. Not brilliant, nothing terribly memorable. Some of the DLC costumes change it, for better (other Tales series outfits) or worse (the school outfits in particular).
The story is pretty decent, if not amazing. The main characters are extremely likable and interesting, however.
Somewhat standard Tales fare, if not a bit darker in overall tone than the norm.
The combat is easily the best aspect.
Due to the addition of the CC counter, which indicates remaining actions, fighting is a faster, more technical affair -- attacks come out immediately as long as you have CC, with minimal startup and are highly comboable.
Right-stick mapping can be used to call other characters to use their artes (special moves), useful for continuing combos or for quickly calling for healing assistance.
The link system provides various passive benefits for characters depending on who they're linked with, such as the ability to steal items, the ability to easily crush an enemy's guard, etc.
Each character provides an interesting combat experience and spellcasters are surprisingly well suited for player control, a welcome change from previous Tales games -- playing as a spellcaster here is a far more enjoyable affair this time around thanks to the increased combat speed.
Oh, and being able to switch the four fighters in battle at any time with those on the sidelines is the best, although they will only take the spot of a living party member (unlike say, Pokemon).
Characters are customizable with various appearance items, often hidden in purple containers strewn throughout the overworld. There's a decent bit of flexibility, although there are times when I'd like to place certain items with certain others, and the slot I have open is incompatible with the add-on I have (notably, I want to have a hat, ears, and glasses on at the same time).
Unlocking skills is a nicer process than some other Tales games, particularly compared to the rather opaque system from Tales of the Abyss. The Lillium Orb is used to adjust your character's stats and obtain new moves and passive effects, many of which are excellent and improve the combat even more, such as Millia's air-dash skills.
There are a handful of minor problems -- in some areas, many fights are fought under a fair bit of slowdown. The combat usually keeps a steady 60fps, but there is no frameskip -- if the framerate slows, so does the speed of battle.
Some of the voices are really annoying, such as Elize's.
And lastly, there are occasional AI related things that may get you killed, such as AI teammates being rather incautious towards enemies and the effects of enemy attacks -- I've gotten hit by a boss's Mystic Arte because a teammate got hit by their Arcane Arte (which the boss will spam to try to connect it to try to trigger their Mystic Arte) for no good reason. The entire party died.
Overall, I'd recommend this to anyone who enjoys action-RPGs or those who enjoy both fighting games and RPGs.
It's great.
Top reviews from other countries
The only issue I had with this game was the trails/areas were more or less the same, little variety in that regard, sometimes it felt like a drag to run through them to get to the next part of the story. But that is a minor complaint for me. Otherwise if you're a tales fan, or are looking to try it out, this is a great game.
