RUNNING STILL is a great album. It is a stunning sophomore effort by Charlie Winston that expands his sound, themes and effervescence from his debut album, HOBO. The tunes range from full band funk to quiet and simple. Each tune has an autonomy and connection with its companions.
When I listen one song engages my feet and drives me to dance, the next explodes my mind with new thought, and a third haunts me in the deepest crevice of my psyche. Charlies Winston is an innovative and specific song writer.
His music is difficult to label, pin down or classify. He is like others, but not like any. He brings in elements of funk, pop, folk, rock and the music hall traditions of England and France. For me, his diversity is what separates him from everyone else out there.
He surprises. I keep wondering where he'll take me next. You might love this album the first time you hear it, but you won't get it without repeated and deep listening.
If you're not ready to pay for the import, buy HOBO. After hearing HOBO,the RUNNING STILL import price will be worth it. Hopefully, the American music industry will find a way fit Charlie Winston into its limited boxes enough to get him launched here. American music lovers will appreciate what the English and French music lovers discovered.
