First of all I believe the two games were developed side by side, which proved why there was only a year between the games' releases. Secondly and more importantly yes the game had at least a similar engine, although the gameplay mechanics were a lot different from any of the other installments in the series, in a good way. The game focuses intently on a game of cat and mouse between you and the ever approaching and relentless Nemesis B.O.W. This means you are required to run alot, and base your strategy on spur of the moment thought processing sometimes. Unlike the other games where you had time to break; work out a puzzle or mess around with your items, etc. This game won't let you do that for too long, eventually Nemesis will get on your trail and FOLLOW YOU THROUGH ROOMS AND DOORS!!! Until a final confrontation is had, wherever you go he won't be too far behind. This instills in you a desperate sense of urgency and fear to be cautious and always on the run.
Customizing gun powders to form new ammunitions was unique to this game as well and very fun to do. The type of game this is, or genre, is classified as 'Survival Horror', to break that down: basically third person perspective with gameplay elements of action/adventure/puzzle/suspense/horror. Overall the game is a very positive experience to play, the graphics continue to be semi-decent into modern times and the story and music is interesting... Super intriguing and important if you are following the whole Resident evil series. If you liked Resident Evil the way 1 and 2 and Code Vernocia played out, you will enjoy this installment as well and I think will find its different style refreshing from the other games in the series, including Resident Evil 4 and 5.
Gameplay- (10/10) Excellent gameplay. The camera can be a wonkie at times, but its easily overlooked. There is some collision detection in areas of the game, such as when Jill opens up cabinets to retrieve items the door passes through the gun barrel. Some zombies bodies will be hanging from closed doors and into the walls when they die. That can also be easily overlooked as this is a ported Gen one title.
Story- (8/10) This Resident Evil has a bit more story than some of the others in the series, but it's still the S.T.A.R.S. members saving Raccoon City from the zombies, but there is one MAJOR difference. Nemesis. You will have a choice to fight or run. If you chose to fight the screen will flash to look like a photo negative and two options will appear at the bottom of the screen. The first time will be fight Nemesis or enter police station. If you chose to fight be prepared because He is this huge zombie-gone-wrong mutation that you will run into SEVERAL times. It makes the game more interesting.
Graphics- (8/10) The graphics are very good being that this is a playstation port. It is a step up from the playstation one version. And IMO, it looks far better than the playstation.
Sound- (9/10) The gunfire in this game sounds realistic as to what the gun should sound like, however the rocket launcher is a bit muted. That too is easily overlooked. You also will be able to pick up gun powders and combine them to make more powerful ammunition.
Voice Acting- (7/10) The voice dialogue can be a bit cheesy at times. It will make you laugh in certain areas of the game, especially when talking with Carlos.
Play Time/Replayability - (8/10) This, again, depends on whether this is your first Resident Evil or not. If it is your first, it will take you longer to complete, because you will be unfamiliar with the style and puzzles. If this isn't your first RE, it will not take quite as long. But either way, this game should take you at least a few weeks to complete overall. And the replay is boosted by which decisions you choose, because you can always go back and try something else!
Final Recommendation - if you're a fan of the RE series i recommend this game. I purchased it new from Amazon.com at a low price and it was everything I expected it to be and more.
2 started off outside but mostly took place in the police station. I wished it had took place more outside. My wish came true with 3 as 3 mostly takes place out on the streets of deserted monster infested Raccoon City. Very cool and trippy full of horrifying thrills as you explore the quarantined town that's a s something straight out of a nightmare. Only in this nightmare you have full control of the situation locked and loaded with a wider variety of weapons than 1 and 2. Good luck with survival.
