Mario Power Tennis is just so fun. It is much more complicated than the basic Wii Sport, but that is its charm. It combines the fun of the Mario characters from the World of Mario with the basic Wii Sport Tennis. The result is a much faster, complicated game of tennis. My kids get a great workout and I am looking forward to playing it with them.
I am not a gamer... but my kids are. I can tell right off if a game is a hit or a miss by the amount of play the game gets. This one is a winner.
to choose what direction you hit (right or left) depends on how close the ball is to you when you hit. if you swing at it a little early, it goes to the left, a little late, more to the right. choosing shot type is a matter of direction of controller movement (it does NOT respond well or naturally even given these instructions). diagonally upward = slice, diagonally downward = topsin, but it never seems to register well for me. lobs are straight up, this sort of works, and dropshots straight down work pretty well. the game is unplayable without a nunchuk. it's still fun, and still the same game! definitely for more of a casual match with friends, i will still bust this out, when you just play and laugh no matter what happens. i can see people laughing at each other's frustration when your character hits a lob when you wanted a slice, or swings prematurely from when you wanted it to, or shoots right when you wanted left. i hope they remake this game for wii u with more of a one to one movement. they can only do so much patching up an old gamecube game. either way this game sure is a workout! had me sweating by the end of a singles tournament. i do not expect nintendo to spend money on a new mario tennis wiiu, but i can only hope they do it. also, this game works fine on a wiiu.
I think many people like me will rush to give a bad evaluation to this game but I think it is because they like me were expecting a "pure tennis" game like Wii Sports when it is not. It is a fun game once you understand the differences and the challenges in it.
The problem is all about controller support. The only way to play the Wii version of Mario Power Tennis is with a wiimote, making it essentially a slightly more Nintendo-branded Wii Tennis. But this Wii Tennis isn't free; it cost twenty-five bucks. Gone is the complexity of lobs, drop shots, heavy spin and brutal sharp angle straight shots. In its place is a feeble effort to get kids to exercise their chubby little wrists.
If they had included the plug-in "classic" controls, this game could have been salvaged. They did not and the game was not salvaged. I'm going to unironically suggest you save your money on this game and get horribly gouged for an original Gamecube copy of this one. Order it on Amazon Prime for the low, low price of $71.31.
