While the game play is somewhat repetitive the game is at its strongest in wide open areas where you can, quite literally, spread your wings, fly around, and explore. The game is easier alone, but multiplayer functionality is both a treat and a first in the Spyro series to do it. Being able to switch between the two dragons offers the game slightly varied ways of play, with Cynder being more magically oriented while Spyro is more of the mashy attack master.
Overall, the game is easier to beat playing primarily as Spyro and switching off of him when he's about to die to do cleanup with Cynder.
Visually, this game is just lovely. While it hasn't aged great, it still continues to be a title any longtime Spyro the Dragon Fan should have in their collections, even if they favor the original trilogy. More than any game in the second trilogy, this is the recommended title in the series even if the game essentially wants you to play the trilogy in order. You honestly don't miss much if you skip the second game in the series. Even simply reading the backs of the previous two games allows you to quickly assume what happened in the titles upon firing LoS:Dawn of the Dragon up.
With all the seriousness, there are some cheesy cutscenes. Also, the camera can be a pain when you are trying to look off or up a ledge to see where to go.
Overall though, I really enjoyed myself while playing this. The new breath powers are fun to fight with, and this game does a better job of adding the puzzle element than The Legend of Spyro. You get to use your powers to solve puzzles throughout the game. And FINALLY making Spyro a dragon that is able to fly is fun! To be honest, that was the main reason I bought the game. There are limits to flying, like downdrafts so you can't just fly wherever you want, but that makes it more challenging and fun.
Overall, I would recommend this and probably buy it again if I lost it.
so i bought a new one, and finished it within 4 hours :) i had a lot of fun playing it too, and it wasn't expensive at all. im going to keep replaying it until i have exactly 100% done.
Improvements:
Large open landscapes to explore, not a strait line fighting enemy after enemy like in The Eternal Night.
Less combat than in The Eternal Night (still more combat that in the old time spyro games) more things to find puzzles to unlock.
You don't have to be the best gamer in the world to do the fighting combos, anyone will easily figure it out with some practice.
You can collect special health gems and energy gems to make your health bar and energy bar bigger
Enemies don't kill you in 2 blows like in The Eternal Night.
The graphics are a lot better, there still are some night like places but I didn't have any problem seeing like I did in the other 2 games.
Boss fights are challenging but still fun, you aren't locked into one position like you were most of the time in The Eternal Night.
Pros:
You can fly, no more jumping from platform to platform trying not to fall into the abyss.
You can play as Cinder and Spyro and you don't have to choose just one you can switch between the 2 OR you can play with 2 players.
You can find armor to put on both Spyro and Cinder and amazingly enough when you put a piece of armor on one of them it actually shows up on your character while you play.
Playing as Cinder you get to explore some new elements.
In each level you get to explore a new landscape, some are just gorgeous and just over all fun to just fly around.
The music is wonderful.
Cons:
The flight controls can be a bit annoying, landing is a bit tricky.
The camera was a huge pain.
When you have the computer play as the other dragon, it sometimes seems to get stuck, while is easy to un-done it can be annoying.
Sparks still seems to be a annoying useless character.
Other things to know:
I would NOT buy this game for the Wii, you will have a hard time.
Hunter is in this game but he is MUCH different than the Hunter that old time Spyro fans know. He is much more mature and well rounded, personally I like the new Hunter, but some old time Hunter fans will not.
The story line is good in most places, although it can be a bit childish for my taste in some parts.
I would recommend that you follow the story line from the other games, I wouldn't buy the other games just watch the cut scenes on youtube.
Over all I would give this game a shot, especially since its not that high priced. I paid 20 bucks for my copy and I got my moneys worth out of it. Old time Spyro fans I would give this one a chance, you might like it. While this Spyro game still isn't my all time favorite, it sure gives Ripto's Rage's a run for its money.
The game consists of got from point A to point B, button mashing to carry out a specific task (there were some free fighting spliced in but not much). Exploring yielded little rewards to the linear design(things have to be done according to game designers sequence, no freedom to the player).
The little ones found it too hard and gave up for another game
The big ones found it too boring and left it for another game
no replay value
do not buy this or other games made by the same designer
