Product Description
Product Description
You're Jak, a quiet hero in the making. Jak and sidekick Daxter are playing on Misty Island a wee bit close to a pit of Dark Eco. Daxter falls in and crawls out looking like a fused otter and weasel. The two visit the village's local wise man, the Green Sage, to transform him back. But the Magical Ports from one island to the other have shut down, and the only way to reach the more knowledgeable wise men that could help him is to embark on an adventure, of course. In every region there is a strange conspiracy around the concept of Eco that adds another layer to the game. Dark Eco is deadly, or at the very least, mystical and strange. Jak and Daxter's world is filled with all kinds of the mysterious element known as Eco. Green Eco gives life, and it's contained in chests and containers all across the many environments the pair encounters. Blue Eco provides energy, speed and opens doors, and Red and Yellow Eco provide energy and the ability to cast fireballs, too. Races, a collection of minigames, enemy chases and timed events are all part of the gameplay.

While exploring some ancient ruins on a forbidden island off the coast, Jak's best friend, Daxter, is knocked into a vat of Dark Eco--a terrifying and deadly substance that could corrupt the world forever--transforming him into a weasel-like rodent. The village sage, Samos Hagai, tells Jak that there's only one person who holds the secrets to transforming Daxter back. Now the pair must set out on a quest in search of a wise old sage who has the power to restore Daxter to his former self.
Plunge into a world of adventure, exploration, and discovery. Embark on a magical, often harrowing journey that challenges gamers to test their wits and skills, allowing them to discover twisted plots and battle the evil within. Delivering nothing but the best ingredients for a game that's set to be one of the biggest titles of the year, Jak and Daxter features great character designs and animations, innovative gameplay mechanics, superior technology, and absolutely stunning graphics. Jak and Daxter pushes the power of the PlayStation2, offering an engaging, immersive entertainment experience that stretches the imagination.
Review
The PS2 is finally getting its fair share of platform games, and Jak and Daxter is a corker. Following the adventures of the yellow-haired Jak and his wisecracking sidekick Daxter (newly transformed into a rodent, and not happy about it), the game is a free-roaming 3-D adventure, very much along the lines of the N64's Banjo-Kazooie, only less irritating. The gameplay, while not breaking any new ground, is perfectly polished and diverse enough to keep the interest high throughout. The main body of the game involves running, jumping, and spinning around the world collecting orbs and power cells and bashing enemies, but there are also racing, fishing, and sliding bits, and all are very well done.
The game's seamless world allows you to move between areas and missions pretty much at will; there are no loading times whatsoever, a lesson that the latest Crash Bandicoot game would have done well to learn. What's more, the irritation of having to restart levels and collect everything again if you lose all your energy is mercifully absent here. The graphics are truly scrumptious and the sound lush--and, much to our surprise, the script is good and the characterization and voice acting not half bad. It's not quite as amusing and cleverly thought out as Rare's aforementioned N64 stalwart--or the company's more recent Conker's Bad Fur Day--but it's pretty close.
The downsides? It's maybe a bit too easy for seasoned gamers--though by no means a cinch--and the magnificent graphics have eaten up memory that might have been used to make the game longer. As tradeoffs go, though, it's pretty reasonable. Bring on the sequel! --Rikki Price -- Amazon.co.uk

You can see plenty of reviews that will give you the story--let's instead take a look at the gameplay. Jak & Daxter is a "platformer", meaning you spend a lot of time jumping up and down on various stair-step parts of each level. The monotony is broken up by side quests: for example, helping a farmer herd cattle, or shooing pigeons away from a series of monuments.
There are also changes to gameplay: "end bosses" that require you to crack the pattern to beat them. There are "riding" stages where you're on a small skimmer, and even these have diversity: sometimes you're racing some bad guys, sometimes you're racing the clock. Last, you collect "Precursor Orbs" as you go, which you can trade for Power Cells, the core collectable of the game. Precursor Orbs are hidden all over the place, as are Power Cells that don't need to be bartered for--they're just waiting to be discovered. It's not easy, but the important part is, when you fail, you know why, and you feel driven to try again, just one more time. A good game makes you really feel like you've earned something that's hard-to-get, not like you had to wrestle it out of the programmer's hands. You don't have to collect every Precursor Orb, nor do you have to find every Power Cell...but if you do, you get a special ending to the game.
Probably the most important point to Jak and Daxter is that little "E" on the package: the game is rated "E" for "Everyone", and it truly does live up to that claim. It's hard for me to find games that I can enjoy, and still share with my 8 year old daughter, but she loves this game, too. It's unfortunate that the second game went in the "T" (Teen) direction--it just doesn't seem right for Jak to start using shotguns and rocket launchers--but at least we have this one, and I would recommend it for the whole family.
For the record, I played Jak & Daxter on a PS3. It ran extremely well and has no glitches or hangups.
"Precursor Legacy" is primarily a platforming adventure game with fetch quests to boot. However, there are hints at a broader, genre crossing elements that make the second and third (and hopefully fourth) installments of the franchise so freaking enjoyable to play over and over and over and over and over and over again.
The characters and story are engaging and the dynamic world in which they exist can keep you occupied for hours and hours.
What's more, the follow-up installments continue and expand on these strengths in new and completely creative ways.
