Editorial Reviews
Fourteen-time Grammy®-winning singer, songwriter and producer, Alicia Keys, will release her highly anticipated fifth studio album, Girl On Fire, on November 27th on RCA Records.
"'Girl On Fire' is about finding your voice, about being unleashed and about trusting your instincts and trusting yourself," says Keys. "I can't wait to share it with the world."
Girl On Fire features powerful anthems and intimate ballads, led by Keys' signature soulful voice and personable and relatable lyrics. Keys collaborated with acclaimed and emerging talents, including longtime song writing partner, Krucial, Grammy Award-winner Babyface, renowned writer and vocalist Jeff Bhasaker, critically-acclaimed artist Gary Clarke Jr., up and comers, Pop and Oak, as well as emerging talent from the U.K., Emeli Sande and Jamie XX, among others. The songs on Girl On Fire are anchored by Keys' powerful vocals and trademark piano, but are sonically broadened by heavy drums, electric sounds, reggae and future soul, which gives the album an evolved, modern-day feel while simultaneously sounding like a classic body of timeless music. The album features an inspirational mix of the rich sounds Keys discovered while recording and traveling the world, particularly time she spent in London and Jamaica, layered within her New York City roots.

I think this is a really good album that will grow on people if they give it a chance. My favorite tracks are:
DE NOVO ADAGIO (classical intro) that melts into BRAND NEW ME - love the lyrics and how softly it begins and builds to the chorus;
WHEN IT'S ALL OVER - great lyrics which seem to be directed towards her son as she speaks about how important it is to love people while we're here because once you're gone all that's left is the love;
LISTEN TO YOUR HEART - while lyrically simplistic, the message is powerful;
GIRL ON FIRE - honestly I HATED this song the few times I saw her perform it and wrote it off as another bad lead off single going back to NO ONE on AIA but it grew on me as I've listened to the album and I don't think Nicki's verse detracts from the song;
FIRE WE MAKE f/ Maxwell - sultry ballad by an unexpected pair (I honestly expected Alicia to duet with Prince before Maxwell);
THAT'S WHEN I KNEW - her vocals are raw & passionate on this track that seems to speak to when she found herself falling in love with her husband;
ONE THING - her vocals remind me very much of early Prince - an airy yet vulnerable falsetto;
101 - haunting stripped down track as she admits that she knows about the gossip of her husband's philandering ways but hopes to be the "1" of the previous 100 who makes him change his ways.
I applaud the fact that Alicia knows who she is as an artist and has stayed true to herself since she started - like two of my favorite artists, Sade & Teena Marie (R.I.P.), Alicia never chased trends or tried to fit herself into a genre that is inauthentic to her so I found it funny to see comments from people wondering why she hasn't hopped on the euro-pop bandwagon like Usher & Ne-Yo.
I also truly appreciate the fact that she hasn't allowed her husband to shape a "new sound" for her using his production skills because although I respect the fact that he is a successful hip hop/rap producer, Alicia is a different type of artist and their sounds might not necessarily mesh well.
Thing is, I'm not at all disappointed by this album and for me that in itself is a rather morose state of affairs. Because everything seems to fall into a mid range contemporary sound no real stretching that I sensed with Diary or my personal favorite Unplugged. At first blush, none of these tunes grab you or bring you to the edge of your seat. It seems with each new release my immediate reaction is indifference and only after immersing myself in the songs do I progressively begin to acquire passing appreciation of some of the tracks.
Starting with As I Am, in my opinion the CDs have lacked the range and vitality that initially made her such an exciting artist. At this point, my purchases are a rote activity absent any confidence a preponderance of the songs will be impressive. From where I sit, most of the cuts here could be interchanged with a host of other female vocalists, as though there is trepidation or an unwillingness to stretch beyond the hordes...
THEN I went to see Alicia in concert on the Girl on Fire tour:
She rocked the place, integrating these new tunes with a blend of favorites - dare I say classics - from the early albums and now I cannot honestly state there is one track that fails to bring a smile to my face. Even before, I had positive feelings about the torch song vibe of Brand New Me, the old Motown energy of Tears Always Win and unsurprisingly, that new bedroom standard the Fire We Make, but now even the uptempo Beyonce style When It's All Over are drive time essentials including that Bollywood exile, Limitedless.
Yes, I just might be a fanboi.
I'm okay with it...
Brand New Me - This song seems to be the highlight of the album. Period. The emotions that Alicia brings in the song, you could tell that she has been through a lot, and it really gives out a great message to those who wants to be someone or change, even move on.
When It's All Over - A mixture of hip-hop, pop, and jazz is included in this song, it's very amazing how great she sounds in the song, and it's not really a style she would perform in. The ending with her son, Egypt, was most definitely a cute and adorable moment.
Listen to Your Heart - A smooth sound and a soft and mellow voice that is a very interesting part of Girl on Fire. Clearly, Alicia Keys is saying that "you gotta listen to your heart", and using "heart" as if it was a person by using "he", which is pretty awkward if you ask me, but it still works well, then the song fades and then.....
New Day - BAM! BAM! BAM! BAM! The drums blow in, Swizz Beats really impressed me with this song, he adds in hip-hop and classical music all in one, this is a very amazing song, and maybe I must say that I do like this version 10 times better than the version with Dr. Dre and 50 Cent.
Girl on Fire - I'm honestly glad that this version was included in this album. Out of all of the versions, Bluelight and Inferno were definitely my favorites. Without adding her Roman, Barbie, and Martha in the song, Nicki Minaj puts out her pure Onika in this song, she's more family-friendly in this song, and as a Nicki Minaj fan, I give her plaudits for that. The "con" of this song is some of the lyrics, which seem to be weak and confusing. How can the "girl" go from "having her feet on the ground and having her head in the clouds," to "on top of the world?" Oh well, overall, it was great.
Fire We Make - I'm actually shocked that this is Maxwell's first duet of his whole career. But I'll say that this is definitely the sexiest and mature song of the album. I love that Alicia starts to sing similar to Maxwell's voice range, this song was definitely worth it.
Tears Always Win - A not-so radio friendly song that, in my opinion, is a really great song of the album, it's more of her style from her As I Am and The Diary of Alicia Keys days.
Not Even The King - From the time I heard this song, I had the feeling that Emeli Sande contributed to writing this song. Although very quick and simple, it has a very amazing meaning to it.
That's When I Knew - Starting off with an amazing background guitar, and amazing vocals from the one and only.
Limitedless - When I first heard the beginning of the song, it sounded as if she was going soft rock or alternative, and when the beat drops, everything changes when she brings out her reggae to the entire song. It's definitely interesting, because it's not really what you would expect from Alicia, she's trying new and unique styles to make the album more great.
One Thing - This Frank Ocean written piece is very good, not so great, if you compare it to Brandy's version of "Scared of Beautiful" on Two Eleven. It was good.
101 - The final song of the album, a very lengthy one also, is where things start to get haunting, she saves the best for last, actually. As the song goes on, is where things start to blow and get more crazier. It was definitely an impression.
Overall, I must say, although Girl on Fire has a little bit of flaws, it was really an improvement from her last one, The Element of Freedom, which was honestly not that great as I wanted it. This and The Diary of Alicia Keys are definitely worth buying. :)
