The story unfortunately features two flawed translations. The PS1 translation suffers from terrible grammar. It has its charms, but it's a bad translation. I have not read the PSP one yet, by the great Alexander O. Smith, but people have complained that the drive to make the dialogue appear authentically "medieval" has created its own complications and incomprehensibility. Personally, I admire Smith, and I understand that the producers insisted on this, perhaps due to the great success of his Vagrant Story translation. Since I'm familiar with Shakespearean language (which I am guessing Smith emulated more closely than actual medieval speech) I don't think I'll have any issues with it, but I completely understand why people would complain.
The game looked lovely when it first came out, with nice backgrounds and well-animated sprites. These probably did not age well, but at the time they were pretty memorable, with effects like rain and running river waters that served to give an impression of a lush, green world.
This world is beautifully complemented with one of the best soundtracks ever composed for JRPGs-- and the competition is tough-- by Sakimoto and Iwadare. I personally prefer Sakimoto, whose fully orchestrated, gorgeous tunes make the game's atmosphere stand out and feel authentically "medieval." There are a LOT of battle music variety, which is great since the game consists of a lot of long battles, and they seem to only get better and better as the game progresses. "Night Attack," "Chapel," "Remnants," "In Pursuit" (a favorite with me), "Battle on the Bridge," "Run past through the Plain," "Random Waltz," "Desert Land," "Antidote," "Under the Stars," and the two boss battles-- these battle tunes are like a hit list of some of the soundtrack's best highlights. Other highlights include "hero's song," a nostalgic theme for Ramza, and "Holy Angela," a dark cello-driven theme for the zodiac stones. Many other tunes don't fall far behind, including the emotional and beautiful "Ovelia's worries," which encapsulates her as a tragic figure.
And what about the battle system? It's a tactics game and features plenty of variety for character classes, and the player can collect job points in order to learn new spells or techniques. Unfortunately, I think that, like in other Matsuno games, he over-does things a bit. Most of the classes in the original version are pretty useless, and only seem like obstacle or way posts for better classes. The game begins being pretty tough but at some point you receive some game-breaking characters that then make it entirely too easy. Also, once you figure out a few tricks the game becomes very easy most subsequent replays, so that you have to actually challenge yourself.
In summary... I always loved this game since I first played it, but since then it has risen to the #1 rank on my favorite JRPG list. It's gorgeously complex and tragic, with, like in all Matsuno's stories, no easy answers-- like life. Tactics Ogre-- his other masterpiece-- features one moment that is infinitely more powerful than anything in FFT-- Lans' ultimate fate-- but the entirety of FFT is so saturated with that tragic, difficult view of the world that it's hard to believe that this is the story of a "mere" video game. Coming from someone who loves classical literature. Thank you for this masterpieces, Mr. Matsuno. We will forever treasure it in our hearts.
Many clones of this game have cropped up, and Final Fantasy Tactics certainly is a clone (in it's own right); because it clones many of the earlier games (Final Fantasy 3 and 5 respectively). The most famous of these is Vandal Hearts. Atlus game company came out with some worthy successors, but this game remains the best.
Now, don't get me wrong, this game is very good. The original story still holds up in many repects.
Gameplay:
The gameplay is still there from the original. You move, you attack, you try not to get killed. And believe me, you will lose characters along the way. I lost one character in the second battle, because I thought I had the dude, and my guy had less HP. You still have the base classes, and many classes have been renamed from the PSX version. The Job system has been re-vamped, and you will find that many of the original abilities have been changed or made more expensive. Don't expect to sit down and finish this game in 20 hours. This will take you a while.
Story:
Along with this, the original scenes in the PSX version (which were good, even by PSX standards and sprite animation) have been either updated with dialogue, or re-done in cell-shaded CGI animated, full-voice acted scenes. And the scenes are terrific. The opening CGI animation is re-done as well, replaced with Delita going along with the 5 characters (who create the diversionary battle that you fight the first time). The second animation (showing the kidnapping of Ovelia), is dynamite. You really get to see Delita's emotional -SPOILERS- ties to the princess begin to form. You also get to see Ramza's ties to Delita, and his torn duty to protect the princess and find out if Delita is really there. -END SPOILERS-
The story is one of the highlights, and if you haven't played either Final Fantasy Tactics Advance or Final Fantasy XII, this game will introduce you to the world of Ivalice in a huge way. Political intrigue, betrayal and romance just scratches the surface. There is a brand new translation, written much the same way as Final Fantasy XII was written. Old style english with many new phrases and old phrases stuck in for good measure.
Overall:
This game just rocks. From the music to the plot; character development, job classes, added features (including Balthier from FF12, Dark knight classes and Cloud from FF7) this game just rocks. Get it, and you won't be disappointed.
For those who are new to the FFT universe, this game is a Medieval-inspired, turn-based strategy role playing game with a compelling (albeit a bit convoluted) storyline, and an extremely addictive character development component called a job system. For example, the main character Ramza begins the game as a Squire, But he may change between any of the following jobs eventually: Chemist, Archer, Knight, Onion Knight, White Mage, Black Mage, Time Mage, Monk, Thief, Summoner, Dragoon, Ninja, Samurai, Geomancer, Mystic, Orator, Bard, Arithmetician, Dark Knight, and Mime. There are also other characters in the story whose inherent job classes cannot be shared such as the Machinist, Skyseer, or Sword Saint. Add to that the ability to inter-mix different abilities and you have a plethora of different combinations to make a wholly unique and powerful soldier.
There's not enough space to go into details about this game, so I'll just leave it at this: if you like strategy RPGs or have a thing for character development, this game is the right choice. Loads of replay value, great story...great stuff.

This is, by far, a strategy game. Chances are you guessed that from the "Tactics" part of the title. The way you can customise your band and the things you can and can't do are interesting and bring you into the fight. Whilst it does have a somewhat three dimensional grid system with interesting movement paths the camera stays at a diagonal angle, making it hard to see enemies and allies at certain points, however you can get used to it fairly quickly.
The gameplay can feel sluggish near the start, and having to play through the same section again can either be fun or boring depending on the situation. But once you're in it the story and the combat will quickly make you forget about that as you rush around from place to place, learning more and more about this world.
Another fun addition which I found to be amusing was the way the characters speak. The way they word their sentences and phrase things is in a very archaic fashion. To some people it might hinder them, but to me it made the world more authentic to the type of age it was set in.
It is somewhat low-res on the PSP, but there are versions on mobile devices and you can get it for the PS Vita (if you have it).
Overall, this game is for the tactician who enjoys an archaic fantasy game. It truly makes you consider the tactics you need to use to get around the enemy and fight them whilst not dying. The plot will grab you by the collar and pull you into the world, engaging you in ways now lost in many modern games. I'd recommend it to anyone who has a PSP and wants a classic strategy game set in the world of Final Fantasy.
